Kodachrome 64
Kodachrome 64 is a Fujifilm film simulation recipe for X-Trans V cameras. Every setting is published below in full, then how it was derived and why each control sits where it does.
The recipe
Research-backed original, re-derived from the Kodak E-55 datasheet (archived, June 2009 revision). The faithful Kodachrome, the 20th century's defining colour transparency as Kodak specified it, not as forty years of projected slides remember it. Full derivation in the notes.
Three Kodachromes in this bank, and they answer different questions. This one asks what did the emulsion do? AP's Kodachrome asks what should it do for Indian skin, in Mumbai? The attributed reference recipe is the popular, well-loved community build. All three sit on Classic Chrome. They diverge on the tone curve, WB and Clarity.

The design principle
Kodachrome was a restrained film that became famous as a loud one.
Kodak's own product description for both 25 and 64 lists four bullets, and the third is "Reproduces subtle color naturally." Not vivid. Not saturated. Subtle, and naturally. The hypersaturated Kodachrome in most people's heads comes from two places that are not the emulsion: it was designed to be projected, a backlit transparency at 5000 K is a fundamentally different experience from a print, and it renders reds with unusual richness, which colours the memory of everything else.
So this recipe holds Color at +2 and gets its richness from Color Chrome Effect Strong, which adds density inside already-saturated colour rather than inflating the whole frame. What it does not do is soften the contrast: Kodachrome is a colour transparency, and contrast. Deep blacks, no negative-film latitude, highlights that clip and stay clipped. Is the film.
Why these values
- Classic Chrome base, an approximation by character, and it must always be described that way. Fujifilm states plainly that Classic Chrome is based on no analog film at all. They call it "an imaginary film" modelling 20th-century printed magazine pages. So this pairing has no shared ancestry with Kodachrome and can never be datasheet-validated the way an emulsion-derived recipe can. What makes it work is a coincidence of character: subdued palette, suppressed magenta, printed-page contrast, and the lowest saturation baseline of any simulation, which is a far better match for "reproduces subtle color naturally" than Velvia or Provia would be. Two further conveniences: Fujifilm's official shooting advice for this base is "underexpose the shadows while preserving the highlights," which is slide-film technique verbatim, and Classic Chrome's shadow end is documented as the second-hardest of any simulation, an asset when modelling a transparency.
- Grain Weak, Small. E-55: diffuse RMS granularity 10 for Kodachrome 64 (and 9 for the 25), described as "extremely fine grain." Among the finest in the entire bank. Finer than Ektar 100 or Portra 400 can claim on their own scale. Weak/Small, without hesitation.
- Highlight +1 / Shadow +1, the faithful-to-slide curve, and the main divergence from the other two builds. Both the reference recipe and AP's Kodachrome run Highlight 0 for their own good reasons. This one goes +1 because a transparency's characteristic curve has a steep shoulder that clips abruptly and unrecoverably: that is what reversal film physically does, and Classic Chrome's already-soft highlight end needs firming, not further softening, to model it. Shadow +1 for the matching reason at the bottom: slide blacks close fast and hold. Together with DR200 this is deliberately the least forgiving colour recipe in the bank, which is the correct answer to "what did Kodachrome do?" and emphatically the wrong answer to "what flatters a face in Mumbai?"
- Color +2, CCE Strong. See the design principle above. CCE Strong is doing specific work: Classic Chrome has a documented suppressed magenta that pulls reds toward brick and terracotta, and deep rich red is Kodachrome's single most recognisable signature. CCE adds density inside saturated colour and so restores it without inflating the frame. This is the one place the base genuinely fights the film, see the honest limits below.
- CCFXB Weak. Kodachrome's skies are deep and slightly cyan-leaning. Classic Chrome's are pale by design, because Fujifilm explicitly removed the magenta component conventional colour design adds to sky blue. CCFXB does not add saturation. It "increases the range of tones available for rendering blues", so Weak recovers gradation in a deep sky without fighting the base head-on. (The reference recipe uses Off. This is a deliberate change, not a X-Trans IV→V port artefact. See X-Trans V & Recipe Conversion Notes.)
- WB Daylight +2R/−3B. Warm, but far less yellow than the popular builds. The reference recipe runs −5 Blue and the Kodachrome 25 recipe −4. Both are heavy yellow pushes. Kodachrome is not a yellow film: that is Gold 200. Kodachrome's warmth is red and earth, and Kodak's claim is naturalness. A modest +2R/−3B corrects Classic Chrome's documented cool shadows and gives the earth-warm lean without inventing a golden cast the datasheet never describes. Fixed Daylight, because a colour-critical transparency emulation has to be repeatable, and because the film literally was daylight-balanced, with everything else requiring a filter.
- Sharpness +2, Clarity 0, a named split, applied the same way everywhere in this bank. "Extremely sharp" appears for every Kodachrome in E-55, so sharpness is definitional and earns the bank's top tier alongside Pan F Plus 50. But Clarity is mid-tone local contrast, not acutance: a different thing, and not something E-55 claims anywhere. Both the reference Kodachrome 64 and Kodachrome 25 recipes run Clarity +3. This rejects that on two grounds: the datasheet's sharpness language maps to Sharpness, and Fujifilm's own guidance is that Classic Chrome "needs less Clarity and Sharpness than you'd expect" because the base already did print-contrast work, so piling micro-contrast on top double-processes it. Clarity 0 also keeps the recipe HEIF-safe and fast-saving.
- DR200, ISO 250-800. Reversal latitude is narrow. DR200 is the bank's convention for slide emulations (Ektachrome E100, Ektachrome 100D) and it floors ISO at 250. The ceiling of 800 is a datasheet constraint, not a taste call: Kodak states "We do not recommend push processing of KODACHROME 25 or 64 Professional Films." Only the 200 pushes. There is no faithful high-ISO Kodachrome.
- EC −1/3 to 0. Reversal discipline: expose for the highlights, because on a transparency they are gone for good, and slight underexposure deepens saturation. Same convention as Ektachrome 100D. This is the exact opposite of AP's Kodachrome, which meters the face at 0 to +1/3 and accepts a blown sky, a deliberate divergence, documented in both files.
Three constraints the datasheet imposes that most recipes ignore
These are not stylistic notes. They are the boundaries of the film, and any recipe claiming fidelity has to respect them.
- It cannot be pushed. "We do not recommend push processing of KODACHROME 25 or 64." Hence the ISO 800 ceiling.
- It is a daylight film, absolutely. Under tungsten (3200 K), Kodachrome 64 drops to EI 16, and that is with a 80A filter. Under photolamps (3400 K), EI 20 with a 80B. There is no honest indoor-tungsten Kodachrome.
- It fails at long exposure. Kodak's reciprocity table gives +1/3 stop and a CC05R filter at 1/10 second, and then says "Not recommended" for 1 second and beyond. Combined with (2), that closes off night, astro and long-exposure work entirely, which is why there is no night variant below, only a redirect.

Handling
- Expose for the highlights and mean it. This is the least forgiving colour recipe in the bank, on purpose. DR200 + Highlight +1 means a blown sky stays blown. Meter the brightest thing you care about, let the shadows fall, and use the −1/3 as your default rather than your exception.
- Bright, directional daylight is the design condition. Kodak's own table puts K64 at 1/125 at f/11 in bright or hazy sun with distinct shadows, that is the light this film was built for and the light this recipe wants. It goes limp in flat overcast.
- Compose for one deep colour. Classic Chrome's low saturation baseline plus Color +2 plus CCE Strong produces a restrained frame in which a single rich colour, a red door, a rusted roof, a sari. Carries the picture. That is Kodachrome's actual behaviour, not a limitation.
- Expect a pale sky, and don't fight it. Fujifilm removed the magenta component from Classic Chrome's blues by design. CCFXB Weak recovers gradation, not depth. No combination of Color, WB and CCFXB produces a Velvia sky here without wrecking the rest of the frame, if a shot needs that, change simulation.
- Where it sits: Ektachrome E100 is the cooler, cleaner, more neutral slide and, per Kodak's own discontinuation notice, one of the two suggested replacements for Kodachrome, along with Ektar 100. Shooting all three on the same scene is the closest thing available to hearing Kodak's own second opinion on its most famous film.
- Video: transfers as Film Sim + WB + DR (manual) + Tone Curve + Color. Grain, Color Chrome Effect and Clarity are all unavailable in movie mode: and CCE is the entire red-restoration strategy here, so a video version will render reds noticeably flatter. Test priority
- A deep red subject in strong sun. Kodachrome's reds are its signature and the base's suppressed magenta is the one thing genuinely fighting this recipe. Does CCE Strong restore them, or do they land brick? If brick, that is Fujifilm's design decision winning, and the honest response is a different simulation, not more Color.
- A high-contrast sunny scene with real shadow. Does Highlight +1 / Shadow +1 / DR200 read as slide film, or merely as harsh? This is the recipe's most contentious pair of values and the reason it exists as a separate build.
- A blue sky with cloud. Tests whether CCFXB Weak recovers useful gradation against a base engineered for pale skies, or whether Off (as the reference recipe uses) was right after all.
- The same scene on this, Ektachrome E100 and Ektar 100. Kodak named the latter two as Kodachrome's replacements. All three are datasheet-derived originals here. That comparison is available to nobody else and would say something real about all three recipes at once.
- A face. Not because the recipe is built for it. It is not, but to establish how unkind the faithful curve actually is, which is the empirical question underneath AP's Kodachrome.
Validation tier: Datasheet-validated + Characteristic. Grounded in the archived Kodak E-55 (June 2009 revision): diffuse RMS granularity 10 (and 9 / 16 for the 25 and 200), "Extremely sharp", "extremely fine grain", "Reproduces subtle color naturally", K-14 transparency process, the daylight exposure tables, the tungsten/photolamp EI penalties, the reciprocity limits, the explicit no-push statement, and Kodak's own suggested replacements. Characteristic pass against Fujifilm's published tonality and colour-design data for Classic Chrome. No real Kodachrome 64 scan yet, though the bank holds a dated 1980 Kodachrome 25 frame (kodachrome-25 reference) showing micro-detail, no visible grain and restrained earth tones, which corroborates the family character.
The structural limit, stated up front. Because Classic Chrome models no film at all, this recipe can never reach the top validation tier the way Gold 200 or Acros 100 can, there is no emulsion-to-emulsion correspondence to verify, only a character match. A real Kodachrome 64 scan would still be extremely valuable (it would settle the reds and the tone curve), but it can confirm resemblance, never derivation.
Pro tip: Read the discontinuation notice, it's a recommendation (2026-07-25). E-55 carries Kodak's own notice that "Although there is no exact replacement, KODAK PROFESSIONAL EKTAR 100 and KODAK PROFESSIONAL EKTACHROME E100G Films are suggested alternatives." Both exist here as datasheet-derived originals, Ektar 100 and Ektachrome E100. If this recipe isn't landing for a given scene, Kodak already told you what to try next.

Worth noticing: 1/125 at f/11 for ISO 64 is roughly half a stop more generous than sunny-16. Kodak was not telling people to underexpose Kodachrome by default, whatever slide-film folklore says. The recipe's −1/3 EC is reversal highlight discipline, not a wholesale pull.
Viewing condition: "Use these films to produce color transparencies for projection or viewing with 5000 K illumination."
Discontinuation notice, printed in the sheet itself: "KODACHROME Film has been discontinued... Although there is no exact replacement, KODAK PROFESSIONAL EKTAR 100 and KODAK PROFESSIONAL EKTACHROME E100G Films are suggested alternatives."
The finding that should change how Kodachrome recipes are built
Kodak's own four-bullet description of Kodachrome 64 reads, in full:
• Excellent for advertising, medical, editorial, and outdoor, travel, and nature applications • Extremely sharp • Extremely fine grain • Reproduces subtle color naturally • Archival
"Subtle." "Naturally." From the manufacturer, about the film with the loudest reputation in the history of colour photography.
The gap between that copy and the popular memory has two explanations, and both are about the viewing, not the emulsion:
- Kodachrome was made to be projected. The datasheet says so. Transparencies "for projection or viewing with 5000 K illumination." A backlit transparency has a dynamic range and an apparent saturation that no reflective print can approach. What people remember as Kodachrome's colour is substantially the experience of a bright lamp behind a dense dye image in a dark room.
- Its reds are genuinely exceptional, and one spectacular colour colours the memory of the rest. The K-14 process laid dyes down during development rather than carrying couplers in the emulsion, which is a large part of both the archival stability and the red rendering.
The practical consequence for this recipe: hold Color at +2, not +4, and take richness from Color Chrome Effect Strong, a gradation tool that adds density inside already-saturated colour. Rather than from a saturation slider that inflates everything. A recipe that cranks Color to model Kodachrome is modelling a slide projector.
The three hard constraints, and why they belong in a digital recipe
Most Kodachrome recipes ignore these because a digital camera has no such limits. But a recipe claiming fidelity is claiming to model a film, and these are the film's boundaries.
1. It cannot be pushed
"We do not recommend push processing of KODACHROME 25 or 64 Professional Films."
Only the 200 pushes, and only to EI 500/800 under stadium light. So the ISO ceiling on a faithful K64 recipe is structural. This build stops at 800 (DR200 floors it at 250), and the high-ISO variants that other Kodachrome recipes offer are, strictly, not Kodachrome.
2. It is a daylight film, absolutely
Under tungsten, Kodachrome 64 rates EI 16, with a 80A filter already applied. That is two full stops of loss on top of a filter. There is no honest indoor-tungsten Kodachrome, which is why this recipe offers a redirect rather than a variant.
3. It fails at long exposure
The reciprocity table gives +⅓ stop and a CC05R filter at 1/10 second, and then simply says "Not recommended" for 1 second and beyond. Kodachrome had no long-exposure mode. Combined with (2), night photography is closed off entirely.
Together these three explain the film's actual working life better than any aesthetic description does. Kodachrome was a bright daylight, hand-held, fixed-speed film. Everything about its look, the contrast, the deep blacks, the discipline its users developed. Follows from having no way out.
The base problem, stated honestly
Every Kodachrome recipe in existence sits on Classic Chrome, and every one of them is an approximation by character rather than a derivation.
Fujifilm's own development story is explicit: Classic Chrome is based on no analog film at all. They describe it as "an imaginary film" modelling the look of 20th-century printed magazine pages. (See Fujifilm Official Design Notes, from the X Stories / product pages official design notes.) So there is no emulsion-to-emulsion correspondence here to verify, only a resemblance to argue for.
The resemblance is real, and it is fourfold:
- Lowest saturation baseline of any simulation. The best available match for "reproduces subtle color naturally" Provia is more neutral-vivid, Velvia is a different universe.
- Documented hard shadow end. Second-hardest tonality of any Fujifilm simulation. On a transparency emulation this is an asset, not the liability it is elsewhere in this bank.
- Printed-page contrast. Fujifilm tuned it to "look like a print when viewed on a LCD screen." Kodachrome was tuned to look right projected. Different destinations, similar contrast philosophy.
- Fujifilm's official shooting advice for the base is "underexpose the shadows while preserving the highlights", which is reversal-film technique, verbatim. The base and the film want the same discipline from the photographer, which is a genuinely lucky convergence rather than a designed one.
And one place it genuinely fights the film. Classic Chrome "controls the saturation and hue of reds and greens" by design, the olive lean in foliage and the brick/terracotta lean in reds are deliberate. Kodachrome's most famous signature is deep, rich red. That is a real conflict, and CCE Strong is the entire counter-measure. If field-testing shows reds still landing brick, that is Fujifilm's design decision winning, and per their own line, "no matter what you do in Velvia mode, it will never turn into Fortia", the honest answer is a different simulation, not more Color.
Fujifilm also removed the magenta component from Classic Chrome's sky blues, where conventional colour design adds it. That is why skies on this base render pale and airy. CCFXB Weak recovers tonal range in blues (it is not a saturation control) without attacking the base's intent. The reference recipe's Off is equally defensible and this is the recipe's most arguable single value.

The two deviations that matter most
Clarity +3 → 0. Both the reference Kodachrome 64 and Kodachrome 25 recipes carry it. E-55 makes a sharpness claim, and this bank consistently distinguishes Sharpness (optical acutance, what the datasheet claims) from Clarity (mid-tone local contrast, a different property). The same distinction produced Sharpness +1/Clarity 0 for XP2 Super and Sharpness +2/Clarity +2 for Pan F Plus 50, whose sheet does use edge-contrast language. E-55 does not. So Sharpness goes to +2, the top tier, because "extremely sharp" is stated for every film in the family, and Clarity stays at 0. Fujifilm's own guidance reinforces it: Classic Chrome "needs less Clarity and Sharpness than you'd expect" because the base has already done print-contrast work, so stacking micro-contrast double-processes it.
ISO ceiling 6400 → 800. Not a stylistic choice. Kodak declines to recommend pushing this emulsion at all.
The tone-curve decision: the reason this recipe exists separately
Highlight +1 / Shadow +1 is the most contentious pair of values here, and it is the deliberate opposite of what AP's Kodachrome does. The reasoning:
A colour transparency is not a colour negative. A negative has a long straight-line region and a gentle shoulder, that is what "latitude" means, and it is why Portra forgives you. A transparency has a steep shoulder that clips abruptly, and nothing above it is recoverable at any stage, because the transparency is the final image. There is no printing step to rescue it.
Classic Chrome's highlight end is documented as already soft. Pulling it further down (Highlight −1 or −2, as several slide recipes in this bank do) makes it more negative-like, not more reversal-like. So the faithful move is up: firm the top end so it clips the way a slide clips. Shadow +1 does the matching job at the bottom. Reversal blacks close quickly and stay closed, and this base's documented hard shadow end is the right tool.
The result is the least forgiving colour recipe in the bank, and that is the correct answer to the question this recipe asks. It is also precisely why AP's Kodachrome exists: darker skin sits lower on the tone curve (per the complexion-density data in the Portra and UltraMax sheets), so this curve buries it. Two recipes, two questions, two answers. Neither wrong.
The Kodachrome family, and what the variants actually model
E-55 covers three films that are usually treated as one. They are not.

The gap between RMS 10 and RMS 16 is large. Treating "Kodachrome" as one look flattens a real three-film range, which is why the variants in the notes change grain and ISO rather than just nudging colour.
What evidence exists, and what it is worth
No real Kodachrome 64 scan. The bank does hold a dated 1980 Kodachrome 25 frame, analysed under the kodachrome-25 reference recipe, showing micro-detail, no visible grain, and restrained earth tones. That corroborates the family character, particularly the "reproduces subtle color naturally" reading, since a real dated frame shows restraint rather than the remembered blast of colour, but it is the 25, not the 64, and one frame.
The structural ceiling on validation, stated plainly: because Classic Chrome models no film at all, a scan can confirm resemblance but never derivation. This recipe can reach "datasheet + characteristic + scan" but not the emulsion-correspondence confidence that Gold 200 or Acros 100 enjoy, where the simulation and the target share ancestry. That is not a flaw in the recipe. It is a fact about the base, and it should be stated every time rather than quietly omitted.
Kodak's own second opinion is available and worth using. The discontinuation notice names Ektar 100 and Ektachrome E100G as the suggested alternatives, and both exist here as datasheet-derived originals (Ektar 100, Ektachrome E100), each with real scan evidence this recipe lacks. Shooting the same scene on all three is the closest thing to hearing Kodak explain what it thought Kodachrome was for.
Validation status
Datasheet-validated + Characteristic, no scan. Every setting traces to E-55 or to Fujifilm's published Classic Chrome design data. The two deviations from the popular recipes (Clarity, ISO ceiling) are argued against specific datasheet language above.
Highest-value evidence to add, in order: (1) a real Kodachrome 64 scan with a deep red subject, the reds are both the film's signature and the base's weakest point, so one frame settles the recipe's biggest open question. (2) a high-contrast sunny K64 frame, to test whether Highlight +1 / Shadow +1 reads as slide film or merely as harsh.
