The film being emulated
Kodak Gold 200 is a consumer colour negative film introduced in 1986 (originally Kodacolor VR-G). It's the quintessential "drugstore film" look: warm, a little soft, gently faded, forgiving, the colours of 1980s-90s family snapshots. Because it's a negative film, its highlights roll off gently and its palette is warm and low-key rather than crisp and saturated.

Reading the tonal/colour signature
- Contrast: low. DR400 + Highlight −1.5 + Clarity −2 flatten the curve for that faded print look.
- Saturation: warm-biased and fairly full (Color +3) but softened by Weak CCE and negative Clarity.
- Cast: strongly warm/amber (+4R / −5B), the most overtly warm of the daylight recipes here.
- Texture: soft edges (−2 sharpness) over visible fine grain. Reads as real consumer film.
Best light / caveat
Built for sunny daylight, that's where Gold's warmth sings. In flat/overcast or artificial light the strong warm shift can look too yellow. The DR400 ISO-500 floor means slightly more baseline grain even in bright light (intended).
X-Trans V note
Fully compatible with X-Trans V as written. To run it on newer X-Trans IV bodies instead, set Color Chrome FX Blue to Weak (one notch up) per the X-Trans V & Recipe Conversion Notes conversion rule.

Validated changes (from scan analysis): White Balance +4R→+3R (flat-light scans showed +4R over-warms). Clarity −2→0 (softness carried by base + Sharpness −2. No Clarity artifacts, per quality standard).
Handling notes
- Best in warm, sunny daylight: that's where Gold's amber warmth sings. Real Gold shifts cooler/greener in flat overcast. In dull light, reduce the Red shift (e.g. +2R) or expect a flatter result.
- Expose slightly bright (+2/3 to +1). Gold's real latitude favours overexposure (−2/+3 stops), giving clean, bright, saturated frames.
- Artificial light: Gold is daylight-balanced. Under tungsten/LED it goes very warm. Correct WB toward the source if you don't want that.
- DR400 forces ISO ≥ 500 (extra baseline grain is intended).
Variant for flat/overcast light
Set White Balance Daylight, +2 Red & −5 Blue and Shadow +1 to keep some warmth and shadow density when the sun isn't out.
Provenance: independently derived from the Kodak datasheet and observed frames. It converges with the popular Fuji X Weekly Gold 200 (X-Trans V) recipe (validation). We differ on Highlight (−2 vs −1.5). See the notes.
Pro tips (2026-07-20): Clarity 0 makes this the bank's fastest-saving warm recipe and fully HEIF-safe. DR400 pins ISO ≥ 500, in bright sun control exposure with aperture/shutter and let ISO sit at 500. Pairs naturally in a C-slot set with Kodachrome 64 (crisp counterpart for the same sunny conditions).
Pro tip: Why the +Red shift exists (2026-07-20, official). Fujifilm describes Classic Chrome as "more subdued with suppressed magenta and cool shadows" vs Provia. The cool shadows are designed in, so the +Red WB shift here isn't taste. It's the standard correction for a documented base behaviour. Corollary: if you ever want genuinely neutral-cool shadows, remove the shift rather than fighting it elsewhere. The suppressed magenta is also why reds land as terracotta/brick rather than pure red, and why skin stays neutral instead of going pink.
Pro tip: The reds/greens shift is deliberate (2026-07-20, Fujifilm development story). Classic Chrome "controls the saturation and hue of reds and greens", the olive lean in foliage and the brick/terracotta lean in reds are designed in, not a fault to correct. The team also "removed the magenta component" from skies, where conventional colour design adds it: that's why skies on this base render pale and airy rather than deep. Consequence: if a scene needs genuinely deep blue sky, Color Chrome FX Blue is fighting the base's intent. Change simulation instead. And because Fujifilm tuned the mode to "look like a print when viewed on a LCD screen," it needs less Clarity and Sharpness than you'd expect. Piling micro-contrast on top double-processes work the base already did.
Pro tip: Pick your base by the sky (2026-07-20, official). Fujifilm adds magenta to sky blues on Velvia ("more memorable" blue) and explicitly removed it on Classic Chrome. So this recipe's airy, understated sky is a base-level design decision, not a settings outcome, and no amount of Color, WB shift or Color Chrome FX Blue will turn it into a Velvia sky without wrecking everything else in the frame. If a shoot genuinely needs deep saturated sky, change simulation rather than fight this one.
Pro tip: Classic Chrome's asymmetric curve (2026-07-20, official). "The shadow end is hard, but the tonality is soft on the highlight end." Practical rules that follow: Highlight −1 is usually enough (the top end is already protected, −2 goes limp), while the base needs a Shadow lift to reach normal shadow detail because its shadow end crushes by design. Two more from the same source: Classic Chrome has the lowest saturation of any Fujifilm simulation ("minimized to the limit"), so Color +1/+3 here is a correction from a deliberately floored baseline, not a boost, and its tonality is the second hardest after Velvia, harder even than Monochrome. Muted ≠ flat. Fujifilm's own shooting advice for this base: underexpose the shadows while preserving the highlights. It "makes the subject more live and the texture remains present."
Pro tip: What Color Chrome Effect actually does (2026-07-20, official). CCE is modelled on Fortia, Fujifilm's ultra-saturated reversal film, and its mechanism is gradation detection, not saturation: "by analysing the light and information received on the sensor surface, one can detect slight gradation… to create tonality while maintaining high contrast." So CCE Strong doesn't make this recipe more colourful. It stops already-saturated areas from flattening into solid patches. Practical consequence: it does most of its work on rich subjects (wood, brass, terracotta, deep foliage, saturated fabric, warm skin) and almost nothing on a grey overcast frame, so on flat, muted days you lose little by leaving it off if you want the speed.
ISO 500 is the sweet spot, not a compromise (measured 2026-07-27). DR400 pins the ISO floor at 500, and that is exactly where the X-T5's conversion-gain step sits, so it is the cleanest ISO in that region, not a tax you pay for using DR400. ISO 640 is the expensive next click: roughly 0.35 EV of dynamic range for one third-stop, against about 0.02 EV for the step from 400 to 500. In good light, hold ISO at 500 and control exposure with aperture and shutter. Measured from published read-noise and PDR data, see Dynamic Range & Tone Curve — the contrast controls.
Movie mode
Movie-mode adaptation of the stills recipe. Movie mode drops Grain, Color Chrome Effect, Color Chrome FX Blue, and Clarity (see Video / Movie Mode — settings, differences, and photo→video translation video-mode-settings), so this reproduces Gold's colour and tone foundation and compensates for the lost richness/softness controls. Target: standard film-simulation recording (baked-in look), not F-Log/HLG.

What was dropped and how it's handled
- Grain (Strong/Small): unavailable in video → add film grain in post if wanted (it's texture, not colour, so it doesn't compromise the SOOC colour goal).
- Color Chrome Effect (Weak): unavailable → partially offset with Color +4.
- Color Chrome FX Blue (Off): was already Off, no effect lost.
- Clarity (−2): unavailable → Sharpness −3 (and, optionally, a physical mist/diffusion filter like a 1/8 Black Pro-Mist) recreates the soft consumer-film mid-tone feel.
Notes
- Same warm-light dependency as stills. Best in sunny daylight. Reduce Red shift in flat light.
- If you shoot F-Log/HLG for grading in post instead, treat this as a starting LUT target rather than a bake-in recipe. The film-sim look is applied in the grade, not the camera.
The research

Concrete, manufacturer-stated characteristics of the actual film:
- ISO 200 colour negative, daylight-balanced (can be used under tungsten/photolamp only with correction filters, 80A/80B). → the native look is a daylight look. Artificial light needs correcting.
- Marketed on "saturated colors, fine grain, and high sharpness", i.e. It is a colourful consumer stock, not a muted one.
- Wide exposure latitude: −2 stops under to +3 stops over. This is the key handling fact. Gold is extremely forgiving and is conventionally shot slightly overexposed for clean, bright, saturated results.
- Print Grain Index 44 (at 4×6, 4.4× magnification). Moderate, clearly-visible grain. Grainier than pro films (Portra/Ektar) by design.
- Characteristic curves: the blue-sensitive (yellow-forming) layer sits highest, and the overall dye balance biases warm: consistent with Gold's reputation for amber/golden highlights and mid-tones.

Consensus across multiple independent film reviews (The Darkroom, 50mmF2, My Favourite Lens, Decaf Journal, Daydream):
- Warm / golden / amber cast, strongest in highlights and mid-tones. Noticeably warmer than Portra.
- Saturated but soft: colourful reds and yellows, gentle contrast, not clinical.
- Greens render slightly yellow-shifted / muted (foliage goes warm-olive rather than vivid green).
- Blues are relatively muted / understated.
- In flat light (overcast/shade) Gold shifts cooler and greener: its warmth depends on warm/sunny light. This is why it's beloved for sunny days and looks flat/green in dull weather.
- Moderate visible grain. Forgiving. A "nostalgic snapshot" character.

Why Classic Chrome (not Classic Negative)?
Gold's soft, warm, moderately-saturated negative character matches Classic Chrome's restrained palette + gentle shadow contrast. Classic Negative shifts shadows green/cyan (a Superia signature) which reads as a different film. Gold is warmer and cleaner in the shadows than Superia. Classic Chrome + a warm WB shift + Color … is the closest faithful match.
Benchmark comparison (validation, not source)
The most popular community Gold 200 recipe (Fuji X Weekly, X-Trans V version) independently lands on the same base (Classic Chrome), the same Daylight …/… warmth, …, Color …, CCE …, Grain …/…. Our derivation converges with it. Strong validation that these values are "correct" for Gold. We diverge only on Highlight (… vs their …) to lean slightly further into Gold's soft highlight roll-off. This recipe is our own derivation from the datasheet + observed frames, not a copy of theirs.

WB shift precision (±1-2 on each axis) is the one value worth tuning against your own reference frames or first test shots. Gold's exact warmth varies with scan/print pipeline. Supply frames and we'll lock it.
