Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100

How this look was derived, and why every control does what it does. The settings themselves are in the pack.

Original (research + scan validated). See the notes, the B&W README, and the Knowledge base.

The film

Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 is a fine-grain ISO —&W film famous for the smoothest tonality, near-invisible grain, superb sharpness, and best-in-class reciprocity (long exposures without failure). Fujifilm's Acros film simulation is named after and built to emulate it. Making this the most "native" B&W recipe in the bank.

The look in one line

Clean, smooth, sharp fine-grain B&W with wide tonal gradation and deep-but-detailed blacks. Refined and modern, not gritty.

Real-scan validation (2 scans, 2 light conditions)

Analysed from Wikimedia Commons (analysis-only): 1. Lakeside beach-deck, soft evening light. Smooth mid-tone gradation across the wood decking, bright sky holding subtle cloud detail (no blown highlights), deep shadows with detail, grain essentially invisible. 2. Japanese temple wall + trees, harsh sun. Rich near-black foliage/trunks with edge detail, bright sunlit brick holding full texture, smooth grain even in the dark gravel (Acros's famous grain-free shadows), crisp sharpness.

Confirmed traits → settings: ultra-fine grain → Grain —/—; smooth wide tonality + held highlights → — + Highlight —; rich detailed blacks → Shadow —; sharpness → Sharpness —; smooth (no grit) → —.

Why it's the fine-grain anchor

Against the other two B&W originals, Acros is the clean pole: minimal grain, smooth gradation, —. HP5 adds even visible grain and balanced contrast; Tri-X adds heavy grain, higher contrast, and grit (Clarity —).

Datasheet confirmation (Fujifilm Neopan 100 Acros PIB, fetched & extracted)

  • Diffuse RMS granularity = 7: extraordinarily fine ("world's highest standard of grain quality" in class) → confirms Grain —/— and the clean texture.
  • "Rich gradation and outstanding sharpness"; resolving power 60 lines/mm (1.6:1) to 200 lines/mm (1000:1) → confirms Sharpness —and the smooth wide tonality (moderate tone curve, no crushing).
  • Superb reciprocity (minimal compensation to 120s+), a genuine Acros signature worth noting for long exposures.

Validation tier

Datasheet (numbers extracted) + characteristic + scan-validated (2 conditions). Next pass: add a portrait scan to characterise skin rendering under +G filter.
