Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 is a Fujifilm film simulation recipe for X-Trans V cameras. Every setting is published below in full, then how it was derived and why each control sits where it does.

The recipe

The definitive fine-grain B&W. Fujifilm's Acros film simulation is named after and modelled on this very film, so this is about as faithful as a recipe gets: ultra-fine grain, smooth wide tonality, deep-but-detailed blacks, sharp. Validated against 2 real Acros scans (see the notes).

Notes

  • Keep ISO low: Acros is a 100-speed film prized for near-invisible grain. The ISO 3200 cap keeps that clean look (raise only when needed).
  • Filters: plain Acros is the neutral, faithful default. +Ye for slightly darker skies / more contrast. +R for dramatic skies. +G for portraits.
  • Clarity 0 is correct here. Acros is a smooth stock. Grit would be unfaithful.
  • Video: Film Sim + DR (manual) + Tone Curve + Sharpness transfer. Grain is already minimal so little is lost.

Scan validation extended to 4 frames (2026-07-21): two further confirmed Neopan Acros 100 frames analysed (Wikimedia Commons, analysis-only. Both Canon EOS 300 + EF 24-70 f/4L, so no toy-lens or mixed-lighting confounders, see the scan-index confounder check). New conditions: a lakeshore in flat hazy daylight and a lakeside deck in low raking sun with long shadows. These frames confirm Fujifilm's own published ACROS curve, visibly. The official design notes describe harder compression in the midtone-to-highlight range (images read sharper without losing dynamic range) and softer treatment in shadows to preserve detail:

  • Highlights: bright overcast sky and sunlit white-painted wood both hold gradation and texture. Crisp, never clipped.
  • Shadows: the deep canopy shadow in the raking-light frame retains full structural detail. Slatted walls, a door, wall art all readable inside what should be a black mass. This is the softer shadow shoulder doing exactly what Fujifilm says it does, and it is why Acros-based recipes can run Shadow-positive and still keep texture.
  • Grain is invisible in smooth sky areas at full width in both frames. Consistent with the datasheet's RMS 7, the finest B&W in the bank.
  • Micro-detail is exceptional. Individual reeds, submerged pebbles, and wood grain all resolved. Status: Scan (4 frames, 2 lighting conditions). Still one photographer and one location. A portrait and a night/high-ISO frame would round it out.

Pro tip: This is why Acros forgives contrast (2026-07-21). Most B&W films punish you for adding Shadow contrast in harsh light. Acros doesn't, because its shadow shoulder is deliberately soft. Verified above in a raking-sun frame where canopy shadows kept full detail. Practical consequence: you can shoot Acros recipes confidently in hard midday or raking light and still expose for the highlights. The shadows will hold more than the meter suggests. The film that actually needs shadow caution is a harder-shouldered stock, not this one.

Fujifilm Neopan Acros 100 is a fine-grain ISO 100 B&W film famous for the smoothest tonality, near-invisible grain, superb sharpness, and reciprocity (long exposures without failure). Fujifilm's Acros film simulation is named after and built to emulate it. Making this the most "native" B&W recipe in the bank.

Real-scan validation (2 scans, 2 light conditions)

Analysed from Wikimedia Commons (analysis-only):

  1. Lakeside beach-deck, soft evening light. Smooth mid-tone gradation across the wood decking, bright sky holding subtle cloud detail (no blown highlights), deep shadows with detail, grain essentially invisible.
  2. Japanese temple wall + trees, harsh sun. Rich near-black foliage/trunks with edge detail, bright sunlit brick holding full texture, smooth grain even in the dark gravel (Acros's famous grain-free shadows), crisp sharpness.

Confirmed traits → settings: ultra-fine grain → Grain Weak/Small. Smooth wide tonality + held highlights → DR200 + Highlight −1. Rich detailed blacks → Shadow +1. Sharpness → Sharpness +1. Smooth (no grit) → Clarity 0.

Why it's the fine-grain anchor

Against the other two B&W originals, Acros is the clean pole: minimal grain, smooth gradation, Clarity 0. HP5 adds even visible grain and balanced contrast. Tri-X adds heavy grain, higher contrast, and grit (Clarity +3).

Datasheet confirmation (Fujifilm Neopan 100 Acros PIB, fetched & extracted)

  • Diffuse RMS granularity = 7: extraordinarily fine ("world's highest standard of grain quality" in class) → confirms Grain Weak/Small and the clean texture.
  • "Rich gradation and outstanding sharpness". Resolving power 60 lines/mm (1.6:1) to 200 lines/mm (1000:1) → confirms Sharpness +1 and the smooth wide tonality (moderate tone curve, no crushing).
  • Superb reciprocity (minimal compensation to 120s+), a genuine Acros signature worth noting for long exposures.

Which cameras this fits

Built and measured on the X-T5. The X100VI, X-H2 and X-T50 carry the same 40.2 MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, so this is not adapted for them. It is the same recipe.
