Kodak Vision3 500T
Kodak Vision3 500T is a Fujifilm film simulation recipe for X-Trans V cameras. Every setting is published below in full, then how it was derived and why each control sits where it does.
The recipe
Tungsten cinema, the high-speed night / interior motion-picture stock. A clean, accurate rendering (distinct from the stylised CineStill 800T, which is this film with the remjet removed for halation glow). Eterna base. Grounded in Kodak Vision3 500T technical data (tungsten-balanced 3200K, EI 500T/320D, fine grain, wide DR, reduced shadow grain). See the notes.

Why these values
- Incandescent WB (3200K): matches the film's tungsten balance: warm artificial light renders naturally, while daylight/LED goes cinematic cool-blue. The +1 Blue nudge keeps a subtle cool night lean.
- Eterna + DR400 + Highlight −2: wide latitude, soft highlights (holds bright practicals/windows).
- Shadow +1: a touch of night density over Eterna's clean shadows, without crushing.
- Grain Weak/Small + Clarity 0: this is the clean 500T: fine grain, no halation glow. (For the stylised glowing-neon CineStill version, use CineStill 800T: Fluorescent WB, Strong/Large grain, Clarity −5.)
- ISO to 12800: it's a 500-speed night stock. Let ISO climb.
Pro tip: Eterna already shifts blue toward cyan (2026-07-20, official). Fujifilm states Eterna moves blue tones "toward cyan" so the sky "will complement the story" instead of competing with it. So this base needs less cooling than instinct suggests, if skies read too teal, nudge +Red / −Blue rather than adding more cool. Two more official facts that shape this recipe: Eterna carries a 12-stop dynamic range, "comparable to F-Log," with "room for post production". Real latitude in reserve, which is why a strong negative Highlight here doesn't turn to mush, and its highlight and shadow tones are both soft by design. Fujifilm calls the whole approach "an art of omission": saturation is suppressed so "a particular colour would not stand out" across a sequence. That is also why a Eterna stills recipe needs a Color lift the video version doesn't, a stills viewer has only one frame to be moved by.
Real-stock scan validation (2026-07-21). Replaces the previous proxy evidence. Until now this recipe rested on a CineStill night frame (same emulsion, rehalated). Two frames shot on actual Vision3 500T have now been analysed (Wikimedia Commons, analysis-only. Both explicitly "Kodak Vision 3 500T", St Petersburg, December 2020): a street scene in daylight/dusk and a metro platform under artificial light.
The two frames together settle what "the 500T look" actually is
Condition How the film renders Daylight, uncorrected Whole frame goes cool blue-cyan. Pale desaturated sky, blue-leaning shadows, while tungsten practicals (headlights, window light) and warm architecture stay warm orange-pink. A naturally occurring teal-orange split. Artificial light (its design condition) Neutral to warm and entirely correct. Sandstone walls read true cream/tan, blues stay properly blue, magenta signage is clean, skin tones natural and slightly warm. No cast at all. So the famous "500T look" is 500T used out of its intended balance. Shot as designed under tungsten, it is a neutral, accurate, low-contrast stock. The cinematic teal-orange people chase comes from putting a tungsten-balanced film into daylight without a 85 correction filter. This is exactly the Validation Methodology. Proof of Faithfulness emulsion-faithful vs artifact-faithful split, and this recipe has to choose knowingly:
- Want emulsion-faithful? Then under tungsten/night the recipe should render neutral, not teal, and this recipe's warm-side WB is correct for that.
- Want the aesthetic? Then the cool cast belongs in daylight scenes, which is a different WB choice, not a different film.
Other traits confirmed in both frames
- Genuinely low contrast with wide latitude. Bright overcast sky and dark road, or bright ceiling lights and black track bed, both hold detail in the same exposure. Supports the recipe's soft Highlight handling and Eterna's documented 12-stop range.
- Highlights bloom gently rather than clipping. Headlights and ceiling fixtures glow softly.
- Shadows stay open and detailed, never crushed.
- Grain fine but clearly present in smooth sky and wall areas. This is a 500-speed stock and it shows, mildly.
- Skin renders naturally under artificial light, the first skin-tone evidence obtained for any cinema recipe in this bank. Confounder check passed: conventional cameras and lenses, no toy optics, lighting stated. Status: Scan (2 real-stock frames, both key conditions), a real upgrade from proxy.
Measured contrast (2026-07-26): Kodak's sensitometric curve for this stock was traced from the archived datasheet. Γ 0.530 (B/G/R separately in Measuring film curves from datasheets, method, calibration, and its limits). Kodak has never published a gamma for any VISION3 stock, so these are the only numbers of their kind. They sit inside Kodak's own patent range of 0.45-0.7 for colour negative. Two things follow for this recipe: the whole family is built to a single contrast aim near γ 0.53, which is why the Eterna-based cinema recipes are so close to one another and should be. And the red record runs ~14 % shallower than green and blue, a result that held across seven estimators. No mechanism is claimed for the red result. It is an open question, not a licence to change a setting.
ISO 500 is the sweet spot, not a compromise (measured 2026-07-27). DR400 pins the ISO floor at 500, and that is exactly where the X-T5's conversion-gain step sits, so it is the cleanest ISO in that region, not a tax you pay for using DR400. ISO 640 is the expensive next click: roughly 0.35 EV of dynamic range for one third-stop, against about 0.02 EV for the step from 400 to 500. In good light, hold ISO at 500 and control exposure with aperture and shutter. Measured from published read-noise and PDR data, see Dynamic Range & Tone Curve, the contrast controls.
Movie mode
Movie-mode version of the stills recipe. Movie mode drops Grain, Color Chrome Effect, Color Chrome FX Blue, and Clarity (see Video / Movie Mode, settings, differences, and photo→video translation video-mode-settings). Target: standard film-simulation recording, not F-Log/HLG.

Grain in post (video): movie mode has no Grain control, so grain must be added in the edit. The stock
Kodak Vision3 500T (5219/7219) is the tungsten-balanced (3200K), high-speed (EI 500) ECN-2 motion-picture negative, the workhorse of night and interior cinematography. Outstanding skin tones, fine grain for its speed, wide dynamic range, and reduced grain in shadows. In daylight it's rated 320 with a 85 filter (and goes blue without one).

The CineStill relationship (important)
CineStill 800T is Vision3 500T with the anti-halation remjet layer removed (so bright lights bloom red) and pushed to ISO 800. So:
- This recipe = the clean, accurate 500T: Incandescent WB, fine grain, Clarity 0, no exaggerated glow.
- CineStill 800T = the stylised version: Fluorescent-3 WB (stronger cool cast), Strong/Large grain, Clarity −5 (glow standing in for halation). Having both lets the user choose accurate vs stylised for night work.
How it's built
Eterna + DR400 + Highlight −2 give the wide-latitude soft-highlight cine base. Incandescent WB matches the tungsten balance (warm light neutral, daylight cool). Shadow +1 adds night density over Eterna's clean shadows. Color +2 + CCE Strong lift saturation so practicals/neon read richly. Fine grain + Clarity 0 keep it a clean motion-picture rendering.
Real-image validation (via CineStill proxy)
Analysed a real CineStill night frame (Reading Terminal Market neon, Wikimedia Commons, CineStill is 5219 with remjet removed, so it's a valid proxy for the emulsion's colour/tonality): confirmed deep clean blacks that retain stone texture, natural warm rendering under tungsten-matched light, saturated reds around signage → validates the Incandescent WB + Shadow +1 + clean-texture choices here. The frame's dramatic red halation bloom around lights is the remjet-removed CineStill artifact. Correctly absent from this clean 500T recipe and present (via Clarity −5/glow) in the stylised CineStill 800T. The split between the two recipes is exactly what the real frame shows.
