Kodak Portra 400

The full recipe, free. Every setting, how it was derived, and why each control does what it does.

The film

Kodak Professional Portra 400 (current emulsion 2010→, T-GRAIN). The modern professional portrait negative, the sheet (pub. E-4050, archived in _reference-sources/datasheets/) specifies:

  • "World's finest grain high-speed color negative film"
  • Print Grain Index 37 for a 4×6 print from 135 (25 = visual threshold of graininess), i.e. Grain just barely perceptible at album size
  • "Exceptional colour saturation over a wide range of lighting conditions", in the Portra register: natural, never punchy
  • Beautiful, neutral skin tones. Optimized sharpness (T-GRAIN)
  • Wide exposure latitude. Optimized for printing to ENDURA papers
  • Skin-density aims (Status M, red channel): normally-lit forehead 1.08-1.18 (light complexion), the film expects generously exposed skin
  • Daylight balanced. CC-filter tables for fluorescent/HID confirm it is not meant to self-correct artificial light

None of the three is "wrong". They answer different questions (VALIDATION-AUDIT: emulsion-faithful vs artifact-faithful). This original is the one to reach for if you want what Kodak's own data says the film does. The other two are closer to what people actually remember Portra looking like in a photo. What would make it unfaithful

  • Strong/Large grain (PGI says no), crushed shadows, heavy warm WB baked in (turns "wide range of lighting" film into an one-light look), Color above +2.

Validation status

  • Datasheet tier: (E-4050 archived PDF. PGI table + exposure/latitude + skin aims read directly, 2026-07-15)
  • Characteristic tier: strong: the most-documented colour negative in circulation. Formal ≥3-source log to be added

The recipe

Research-backed original, derived from the Kodak E-4050 datasheet (archived: _reference-sources/datasheets/kodak-still/portra-400_e4050.pdf). Reproduces the emulsion the sheet describes: the world's finest-grain high-speed colour negative. Warm-neutral skin, low contrast, wide latitude, grain you barely see. Derivation in the notes.

Distinct from kodak-portra-400-v2 (reference), which renders the grainier scanned-Portra look popular online. This recipe targets the film as specified.

Why these values (short)

  • Classic Chrome base: Portra's palette is muted-warm with gentle hue separation. Classic Chrome's restrained saturation is the right canvas (the whole Portra recipe family agrees), warmed back via WB shift.
  • Grain Weak/Small: datasheet: "world's finest grain high-speed film". Print Grain Index 37 on a 4×6 (threshold of visibility = 25). Real Portra grain is barely perceptible. Strong grain models scans, not film.
  • WB Daylight +2R/−4B: Portra's warm-neutral balance. Fixed preset for repeatability (per Validation Methodology — Proof of Faithfulness methodology: fixed WB for colour-critical film).
  • DR400 + Highlight −1.5: the famous negative latitude (clean to +3 over) and long soft shoulder. Highlights never bite.
  • Shadow −1: low-contrast open shadows. Portra never crushes.
  • Color +1, CCE Weak: the sheet's "exceptional colour saturation" is for a portrait film. In practice: natural, skin-first, never punchy.
  • Sharpness −1: T-GRAIN acuity is high but negative-film edges are gentle. −1 avoids digital bite.
  • Clarity 0: nothing in the film warrants grit. Quality standard holds.

Handling

  • Overexpose freely: the film is optimized for generous exposure (skin density targets sit high). +2/3 is the sweet spot, +1 in flat light.
  • Gray-card forehead density targets in the sheet (1.08-1.18 light complexion) are the reference for skin placement. Expose skin bright.
  • Under tungsten/fluorescent the real film needs colour-compensating filters. Digitally, correct WB toward the source or accept the warm cast.

Validation tier: Datasheet-validated (E-4050: PGI, latitude, balance, skin-density aims, archived PDF). Characteristic pass strong (best-documented film in the bank's sources). Scan-validation pending. Drop real Portra 400 scans into references/.

Scan validation, first pass (2026-07-20): 1 real Portra 400 scan analysed (sunny daylight, red/white coach, Wikimedia Commons, analysis-only): confirmed restrained saturation even on a saturated red subject, warm-neutral (not stark) whites, open shadows with detail (under-vehicle), muted natural greens, and fine non-clumpy grain. Consistent with Weak/Small grain, Shadow −1, Color +1, and the DR400 soft-highlight build. More scans (portrait skin, overcast, golden hour) still wanted. Drop into references/.

Pro tip: Why the +Red shift exists (2026-07-20, official). Fujifilm describes Classic Chrome as "more subdued with suppressed magenta and cool shadows" vs Provia. The cool shadows are designed in, so the +Red WB shift here isn't taste. It's the standard correction for a documented base behaviour. Corollary: if you ever want genuinely neutral-cool shadows, remove the shift rather than fighting it elsewhere. The suppressed magenta is also why reds land as terracotta/brick rather than pure red, and why skin stays neutral instead of going pink.

Pro tip: The reds/greens shift is deliberate (2026-07-20, Fujifilm development story). Classic Chrome "controls the saturation and hue of reds and greens", the olive lean in foliage and the brick/terracotta lean in reds are designed in, not a fault to correct. The team also "removed the magenta component" from skies, where conventional colour design adds it: that's why skies on this base render pale and airy rather than deep. Consequence: if a scene needs genuinely deep blue sky, Color Chrome FX Blue is fighting the base's intent. Change simulation instead. And because Fujifilm tuned the mode to "look like a print when viewed on a LCD screen," it needs less Clarity and Sharpness than you'd expect. Piling micro-contrast on top double-processes work the base already did.

Pro tip: Pick your base by the sky (2026-07-20, official). Fujifilm adds magenta to sky blues on Velvia ("more memorable" blue) and explicitly removed it on Classic Chrome. So this recipe's airy, understated sky is a base-level design decision, not a settings outcome, and no amount of Color, WB shift or Color Chrome FX Blue will turn it into a Velvia sky without wrecking everything else in the frame. If a shoot genuinely needs deep saturated sky, change simulation rather than fight this one.

Pro tip: Classic Chrome's asymmetric curve (2026-07-20, official). "The shadow end is hard, but the tonality is soft on the highlight end." Practical rules that follow: Highlight −1 is usually enough (the top end is already protected, −2 goes limp), while the base needs a Shadow lift to reach normal shadow detail because its shadow end crushes by design. Two more from the same source: Classic Chrome has the lowest saturation of any Fujifilm simulation ("minimized to the limit"), so Color +1/+3 here is a correction from a deliberately floored baseline, not a boost, and its tonality is the second hardest after Velvia, harder even than Monochrome. Muted ≠ flat. Fujifilm's own shooting advice for this base: underexpose the shadows while preserving the highlights. It "makes the subject more live and the texture remains present."

ISO 500 is the sweet spot, not a compromise (measured 2026-07-27). DR400 pins the ISO floor at 500, and that is exactly where the X-T5's conversion-gain step sits, so it is the cleanest ISO in that region, not a tax you pay for using DR400. ISO 640 is the expensive next click: roughly 0.35 EV of dynamic range for one third-stop, against about 0.02 EV for the step from 400 to 500. In good light, hold ISO at 500 and control exposure with aperture and shutter. Measured from published read-noise and PDR data, see Dynamic Range & Tone Curve — the contrast controls.

Naming note (2026-08-08): Kodak now sells this emulsion as Ektacolor Pro, not Portra. The rename happened in March 2026 as Eastman Kodak reclaimed the brand from Kodak Alaris. The film material is unchanged, so every setting below still holds. The recipe keeps the Portra name because the emulsion, the datasheet and the whole community still do.
