Kodak ColorPlus 200
Kodak ColorPlus 200 is a Fujifilm film simulation recipe for X-Trans V cameras. Every setting is published below in full, then how it was derived and why each control sits where it does.
The recipe
Kodak's quiet consumer negative, the budget roll that isn't trying to sell you a mood. Where Gold 200 glows, ColorPlus sits back: less saturated, lower contrast, and less warm, with the same Kodak family character underneath. Derivation and its limits in the notes. Grade rationale in the notes.
Evidence tier: Characteristic only. Differentially derived. Kodak has never published a technical datasheet for ColorPlus 200 (datasheet index), so this recipe cannot be datasheet-derived the way Gold 200 was. Instead it is built as a documented offset from Gold 200, this bank's most heavily scan-validated recipe (~35 frames), changing only the three axes on which independent sources agree. That is weaker than a measured original and is labelled as such. Real scans in
the reference setare the single thing that would upgrade it.

What changed from Gold 200, and why
Every difference below traces to a claim multiple independent reviewers agree on. Nothing else was touched. Keeping the base and the texture settings identical is what makes the derivation auditable.

Handling notes
- This is the "no personality" Kodak, and that is the point. If a frame looks like it wants more, you probably want Gold 200. They are deliberately one notch apart on three axes and nothing else.
- Best in ordinary daylight, including flat and overcast. ColorPlus's lower contrast is more forgiving of dull light than Gold's, which wants sun.
- Clarity 0 keeps it HEIF-safe and among the bank's fastest-saving recipes.
- Grain was deliberately left at Gold's setting. Reviewers directly contradict each other on whether ColorPlus is finer or coarser than Gold, so no change was made rather than picking a side. See the notes.
- Blue rendering was deliberately left alone (CCFXB Off) for the same reason: sources split between "renders skies a nice deep blue" and "a slightly muted look to some colours such as the blues."
Variant: Classic Negative base
ColorPlus is a consumer print film, and Classic Negative is Fujifilm's consumer-print-negative simulation, so it is a legitimate alternative reading. Swap the base to Classic Negative and set Color 0, Shadow −1. Leave everything else (Classic Negative's shadow end is firmer than Classic Chrome's, so it needs one more step of lift to land in the same place). Expect heavier shadows and a more overtly "drugstore print" result. Untested against scans. Offered as a documented alternative, not a validated one.
ISO 500 is the sweet spot, not a compromise (measured 2026-07-27). DR400 pins the ISO floor at 500, and that is exactly where the X-T5's conversion-gain step sits, so it is the cleanest ISO in that region, not a tax you pay for using DR400. ISO 640 is the expensive next click: roughly 0.35 EV of dynamic range for one third-stop, against about 0.02 EV for the step from 400 to 500. In good light, hold ISO at 500 and control exposure with aperture and shutter. Measured from published read-noise and PDR data, see Dynamic Range & Tone Curve, the contrast controls.
Pro tip: Why the +Red shift exists at all.. Fujifilm describes Classic Chrome as "more subdued with suppressed magenta and cool shadows" Those cool shadows are designed in, so a positive Red shift on this base is the standard correction, not a stylistic warm-up. ColorPlus uses less of it than Gold because the film it emulates is less warm, but it still needs some, or the base's own coolness reads as a colour cast rather than as the film.
Movie mode
Movie-mode adaptation of the stills recipe. Movie mode drops Grain, Color Chrome Effect, Color Chrome FX Blue and Clarity (see Video / Movie Mode, settings, differences, and photo→video translation video-mode-settings), so this carries the colour and tone foundation across and compensates for the missing texture controls. Target: standard film-simulation recording (baked-in), not F-Log.
Why this recipe has a video version at all. The bank's stated policy is that video coverage follows the video stocks, and ColorPlus is a stills consumer negative. It is included because its sibling Gold 200 has one, and this recipe is derived from Gold: shipping the parent's video version but not the child's would be an arbitrary gap in the same family.

What was dropped, and how it is handled
- Color Chrome Effect (Weak): unavailable → Color +2. Note this is a smaller lift than Gold's video version takes (+3 → +4): ColorPlus is the muted one of the pair, and over-compensating here would erase the very difference the recipe exists to express.
- Clarity (0): was already 0. Nothing lost. Sharpness moves to −3 to carry the documented softness that Clarity was not providing anyway.
- Grain (Strong/Small): unavailable → add in post. ColorPlus is a consumer ISO 200 stock, so a moderate amount is right. See Post-Production Film Grain, deriving settings from datasheets post-grain-settings for Premiere and Resolve values derived from datasheet measurements.
- Color Chrome FX Blue (Off): was already Off. Nothing lost.
Notes
- More forgiving in flat light than Gold's video recipe, which is the practical reason to reach for this one. Gold wants sun. ColorPlus's lower contrast and smaller warm shift hold up in overcast, which is where run-and-gun video usually lives.
- Meter for the shadows. The stock's documented failure mode is underexposure, roughly one stop before colours muddle, while it tolerates two to three stops over. In video you cannot recover a frame afterwards, so err bright and let DR400 hold the highlights.
- Shooting F-Log/F-Log2 instead? Treat this as a grade target, not a bake-in. The F-Log→Rec.709 LUTs are the starting point.

The film
Kodak ColorPlus 200 is a daylight-balanced (≈5500 K) ISO 200 C-41 colour negative film, sold in 35 mm only. For most of its life it was a non-US-market stock. Common in India, the UK and much of Asia, which is a large part of why Kodak documents it so thinly and why it has always been the cheap roll on the shelf.
Its reputation is unusual: it is the Kodak consumer film people describe by what it doesn't do. Reviewers reach for "quieter", "more honest", "less personality" That is the whole design brief for this recipe.
Why Classic Chrome
Classic Chrome is the lowest-saturation simulation Fujifilm makes, with two documented traits that suit ColorPlus precisely:
- Suppressed magenta. Fujifilm's own design statement says the mode "removed the magenta component" from skies. That gives the pale, unshowy sky ColorPlus is known for, rather than the deep blue a punchier base would render.
- Cool shadows, designed in. This is the trait the White Balance shift exists to correct, see below.
It is also the base Gold 200 uses. Holding the base constant is deliberate: it makes ColorPlus readable as Gold minus three things rather than as a separate guess, and it lets every unchanged setting inherit Gold's scan validation.
(A Classic Negative variant is offered in the recipe. It is a legitimate reading, Classic Negative is Fujifilm's consumer-print-negative sim, and ColorPlus is a consumer print film, but it is untested here, and changing the base would break the auditable relationship to Gold.)
The three settings that moved
White Balance +2 Red, −3 Blue (Gold: +3R, −5B)
Classic Chrome's shadows run cool by design, so a positive Red shift on this base is a correction, not a stylistic warm-up. Remove it entirely and the base's coolness reads as a colour cast rather than as film.
ColorPlus takes less of it than Gold because every comparative source puts it cooler and more neutral. The −3 Blue (rather than Gold's −5) is the same reasoning on the other axis: warmth is produced here partly by withholding blue, and ColorPlus wants less of that withheld.
Color +1 (Gold: +3)
The single clearest consensus in the sources: ColorPlus is less saturated than Gold. On a base that is already the least saturated Fujifilm offers, +1 keeps colour present without the lift that makes Gold sing. Going to 0 would read as a Classic Chrome recipe rather than a Kodak one.
Shadow −0.5 (Gold: +0.5)
ColorPlus is consistently described as lower contrast than Gold, and the language is unusually consistent across sources: "softer contrast and more muted colours", "softer, less contrasty… especially when compared to Kodak Gold 200", "a bit more muted, with less punchy tones overall, which lends a softer, more pastel look."
Gold's +0.5 adds shadow density for sunny-day punch. Two half-steps down lands at −0.5: past neutral, slightly open, but nowhere near Matte Editorial's −2 lift. Blacks still reach black, the look is muted, not faded.
This is only expressible because the tone curve moves in half steps, 13 positions across −2…+4, twice the resolution of Color and Sharpness, Dynamic Range & Tone Curve, the contrast controls documented in July 2026. On integer steps the choice would be 0 (too little) or −1 (too much).
Moved from 0 to −0.5 on 2026-07-27, after adjudicating against a competing draft forced a re-read of the contrast evidence. See ` §6, the competing settings were rejected, but the argument improved this one.
The settings that deliberately did not move
Highlight −2. Protects the highlight roll-off that makes any colour negative read as negative rather than slide. Not a point of difference between these two films.
Grain Strong, Small. Reviewers directly contradict each other on whether ColorPlus is finer or coarser than Gold. No change was made rather than picking a side. See ` §4.
Color Chrome FX Blue Off. Blue rendering is the other contested axis. Left alone for the same reason.
Color Chrome Effect Weak · Sharpness −2 · High ISO NR −4 · Clarity 0. Bank conventions, and none is a documented point of difference. Clarity 0 keeps the recipe HEIF-safe and fast-saving.
DR400, and this one is now positively evidenced rather than merely inherited. ColorPlus's documented behaviour is wide overexposure latitude: "two stops under or three stops over", "enough over-exposure headroom to handle 2-3 stops", "does very well when overexposed", and the recommended technique is to meter for the shadows (underexposure is where it fails, roughly one stop before colours muddle). DR400 protects exactly the end of the range the film is strongest at. It pins ISO ≥ 500, which is Sensor Architecture. X-Trans, Bayer, and what GFX actually is exactly where the X-T5's conversion-gain step sits, so the floor is the cleanest ISO in that region rather than a penalty.
A competing draft argued the opposite. DR200, to make highlights clip sooner, on the premise that ColorPlus lacks highlight retention. That premise is refuted by the sources above. See ` §6.
Where this recipe is weak, stated plainly
It rests on comparative review consensus, not measurement. There is no datasheet and, as of writing, no scans in the reference set. It sits in the bank's "Characteristic only" tier, the same tier as Fortia SP, the weakest recipe here.
What makes it more defensible than a guess is that the settings it did not change are inherited from a recipe validated across ~35 real scans, and that the three it did change each trace to a specific, quotable, multi-source claim. What would make it genuinely strong is real scans.

The research
Compiled 2026-07-27. This page exists because the evidence for ColorPlus is unusually weak for a film this popular, and the recipe's credibility depends on saying so precisely.
1. The blocking fact: there is no datasheet
Kodak has never published a full technical data sheet for ColorPlus 200. This bank recorded that independently, before this recipe existed, see the datasheet index's gap list. It is a consumer film sold largely outside North America for most of its life, and Kodak documents consumer stocks far more thinly than professional ones.
Consequence: the method that produced Gold 200 (Kodak publication E-7022 → characteristic curves → settings) is not available here. Pretending otherwise would be the failure mode this bank exists to avoid.
2. The method actually used: differential derivation
Instead of deriving from nothing, ColorPlus is derived as an offset from its closest documented sibling:
- Both are Kodak consumer C-41 negative films at ISO 200, daylight-balanced.
- Gold 200 is this bank's most heavily validated recipe. Datasheet-derived and scan-validated across ~35 frames.
- Reviewers overwhelmingly describe ColorPlus by comparison to Gold, which means the comparative evidence is far stronger than the absolute evidence.
So the recipe changes only the axes on which independent sources agree, and leaves everything else at Gold's validated values. This makes every difference auditable: each one traces to a specific claim, and the unchanged settings inherit Gold's validation rather than being guessed.
3. What the sources agree on: the three axes that moved

4. What the sources contradict each other on: and was therefore left alone
This is the most important section of this page. Where reviewers disagree, the recipe makes no change rather than picking the more convenient claim.

5. A dateable factual error in the circulating lore: do not repeat it
Several sources state that ColorPlus descends from Kodacolor VR 200 (1982) and that "the 1982 Kodacolor VR films used the new T-Grain technology."
The T-Grain claim is false on dates. Kodak's T-GRAIN emulsion technology was introduced with T-MAX in 1986. The 1982 Kodacolor VR line predates it. A source that gets this wrong is not a reliable source for the emulsion's construction either.
Therefore:
- The VR lineage is treated here as community lore, not established fact. It is plausible and widely repeated, and Kodak has not confirmed it in anything reachable.
- No claim about T-Grain appears in this recipe, in either direction.
- The recipe does not rest on the lineage story at all. It rests on the comparative behaviour in §3, which is observable regardless of what emulsion is inside.
6. Adjudication against a competing recipe (2026-07-27)
A second ColorPlus recipe, drafted independently in a Gemini session, reached materially different settings from the same absence of a datasheet. Both cannot ship. This section records how the conflict was settled, because "we picked ours" is not a reason.
The two recipes agreed on 9 of 14 settings. Classic Chrome, Grain Strong/Small, CCE Weak, CCFXB Off, Color +1, Clarity 0, High ISO NR −4, ISO ceiling, and exposure compensation. All five disagreements trace to one premise, which is the thing that had to be tested.

Where the competing draft prompted a change to this recipe. Re-researching the contrast axis to adjudicate turned up stronger language than the original pass had, "softer, less contrasty… especially when compared to Kodak Gold 200", "softer contrast and more muted colours", "a bit more muted, with less punchy tones overall, which lends a softer, more pastel look" Four independent sources, all one direction. Shadow was therefore moved from 0 to −0.5, one further half-step into the direction the evidence supports. The conflict improved this recipe even though the competing settings were rejected.
Two claims in the competing draft that are not supportable, recorded so they are not reintroduced:
- "its chemical behavior reveals it to be a direct descendant of the older Kodacolor VR emulsions" Stated as fact. See §5: this is community lore, and the lore that carries it contains a dateable T-Grain error.
- "less exposure latitude" Contradicted by the retailer specification and by multiple reviewers, as above.
What this recipe still concedes. ColorPlus is warm in absolute terms, and a reader could reasonably call it "warm", the competing draft is not wrong about that, only about the direction relative to Gold, which is the only comparison this recipe is built on.
7. What would upgrade this recipe
In order of value:
- Real ColorPlus scans in
the reference set. Several, across sunny and overcast light. This is the only thing that moves it out of the bank's weakest tier. It would also settle the grain and blue questions above, which reviewers could not. - Your own X-T5 frames in
the test framesshot with the settings, to check the three offsets landed. - A Kodak technical publication, if one is ever found. This bank has looked and does not believe one exists.
