Fashion Editorial ("Vogue") — Design Analysis & Derivation
How this look was derived, and why every control does what it does. The settings themselves are in the pack.
Creative original. No film target, the reference is a look (magazine cover and editorial spread), so validation means matching reference imagery rather than a datasheet. See validation-methodology.md and the creative README. Settings in the notes.
The design brief
A fashion editorial page has a consistent, learnable set of visual properties, and they are not the properties of a flattering snapshot:
- Deep, rich, genuinely dark blacks. Editorial authority comes from the bottom of the frame. A lifted black point reads as lifestyle or documentary, never as couture.
- Flawless skin. Smooth, even, with texture retouched away, but not plastic.
- Crisp garment and material detail. The clothes are the product. Weave, drape, sheen and stitching have to hold.
- Controlled, slightly desaturated colour. Editorial palettes are sophisticated, not candy. Colour is allowed to be — but never cheerful by accident.
- Protected highlights. Retouched skin highlights roll —; they do not clip.
Requirements 2 and 3 are in direct conflict. Smooth skin and crisp fabric are opposite demands on the same image. Resolving that conflict is what this recipe is actually for.
The central move: Sharpness —with Clarity —
This is the recipe's one genuinely clever setting, and it is why the pair are set in opposite directions.
- Sharpness operates on edge acutance: the transition at a boundary. It makes a stitched seam, a zip, an eyelash, the edge of a lapel read crisply.
- Clarity operates on mid-tone local contrast: the texture inside a smooth region. On skin that means pores, fine lines, unevenness, the shadow structure of a blemish.
Setting Sharpness —and Clarity —therefore gets both requirements at once: edges sharpen, surfaces smooth. This is the digital equivalent of what a retoucher does with frequency separation. Separate the fine texture from the tonal structure and treat each differently.
The bank uses this same distinction everywhere, but usually to argue one setting down (see Kodachrome 64 and XP2 Super, where "sharp" in a datasheet earns Sharpness but not Clarity). This is the only recipe that uses it to push the two in opposite directions simultaneously, and it is a technique worth stealing for any portrait recipe.
Why Pro Neg. Hi: and the official caveat that changes when you should use it
Fujifilm splits the Pro Neg. pair by lighting condition, not by taste (see fujifilm-official-design-notes.md):
- Pro Neg. Std: "optimized for good lighting and moderate contrast, such as studio photography."
- Pro Neg. Hi: "boosts contrast, creating shadows even in flat light."
Read that carefully, because it inverts the obvious assumption. Hi is the flat light profile. It exists to manufacture shadow structure when the light isn't giving you any.
So the honest guidance, which is in the recipe as a pro tip and is worth restating here: if you are shooting a controlled strobe editorial, the intended base is Std, and this recipe's parameters will apply predictably on top of light that already has contrast. Reach for Hi when you are shooting in flat, unmodifiable natural light, an overcast street, a north-facing window, a grey hotel room, and need the profile to build the drama the light won't.
The recipe ships on Hi because that is the harder and more common real-world case for anyone not renting a studio. Switching to Std in a strobe setup is a one-setting change and is the correct move there.
Fujifilm's stated rationale for the whole Pro Neg. family is negative film's "softer look and compatibility with prints." This family was designed to be printed, which is exactly why it suits a look derived from magazine layouts.
Shadow —and —: an apparent contradiction that isn't
Setting Shadow to —(deeper, harder blacks) while running — (maximum highlight protection) looks contradictory. It is the correct combination for this brief, and the reason is that the two controls act on opposite ends of the curve:
- Shadow —hardens the bottom → the deep, saturated, luxurious blacks the brief demands.
- — protects the top → highlights on retouched skin, white fabric and rim light roll off softly instead of clipping.
The result is a curve that is hard at the bottom and soft at the top, a deliberately asymmetric shape, and precisely what an editorial page looks like. Contrast without clipping.
Note the practical consequence: — pins ISO to a minimum of 500 on the X-T5. That is fine for this recipe (it is not a low-noise-critical look and Weak/Small grain is already present), but it is worth knowing if you are working in bright studio light and wondering why ISO won't drop.
The colour strategy, and why it is subtractive
Color —, CCE —, WB —/—. Every one of those is a reduction, which is unusual. Most of this bank adds colour.
Editorial colour is restrained by design. The palette is chosen at the styling stage (garment, set, makeup), and the photography's job is to render those choices cleanly, not to enhance them. A saturation boost turns a considered olive into a cheerful green and destroys the styling.
- Color —pulls the whole frame back from vividness.
- CCE Weak rather than Off. Color Chrome Effect adds density inside already-saturated colour, which keeps a — garment red from going flat as saturation is reduced. It is the counterweight to Color —, not a contradiction of it.
- WB —/—: a slight cool lean. Editorial and fashion imagery skews cool-neutral; warmth reads as lifestyle, travel or nostalgia.
Grain —/—, not —
A judgement call worth naming. Clean Girl runs Grain — because textureless is its entire brief. This look wants high-production polish, which is not the same thing. Printed editorial work has a faint tooth from paper and process, and a completely grainless digital frame can read as cheap rather than expensive. Weak/Small is the minimum that still says "photographed" rather than "rendered."

The instructive pairing is with Clean Girl: both want controlled colour and flawless skin, and they arrive at opposite tone curves. Shooting one subject on both isolates exactly what Shadow does to perceived status in an image. Deep blacks read expensive and serious, lifted blacks read fresh and approachable.
For B&W couture, the variant in the notes swaps to Acros while keeping Shadow —/ Sharpness —/ Clarity —. That combination is worth calling out separately: it is the classic monochrome fashion rendering, and it works because the Sharpness/Clarity split survives the move to black and white unchanged.
Validation status
Creative design. Aesthetic reference is the evidence tier. Drop magazine tears, cover scans and editorial frames into references/ and the recipe can be tuned toward specific publications, which have genuinely different house looks.
Test priority:
- A portrait with visible skin texture, in flat natural light. The Sharpness —/ Clarity —split is the recipe's core claim. Does skin smooth while the eyelashes and garment edge stay crisp? If skin still reads textured, go Clarity —efore touching Sharpness.
- A dark garment against a dark ground. Shadow —on a base already built to create shadows is a lot of hardening; this frame tests whether black fabric retains any structure or goes to a void.
- The same setup on Pro Neg. Std with strobes, per the caveat above. This is the setting most likely to be wrong for a given shoot, and it is a one-notch fix.
