Bleach Bypass Noir — Design Analysis & Derivation

How this look was derived, and why every control does what it does. The settings themselves are in the pack.

The process this is named after, and why it produces that look

Bleach bypass (also skip bleach, ENR, silver retention) is a real photochemical technique, and understanding it explains every setting in this recipe.

In normal colour processing, development produces two images in the same emulsion: a dye image from the colour couplers, and a metallic silver image alongside it. The bleach step then dissolves the silver away, leaving only the dyes. That is why a normal colour negative or print is pure dye.

Bleach bypass skips or truncates that step. The silver stays. And a black-and-white silver image superimposed on a colour dye image produces two effects simultaneously:

  • Low saturation: the neutral silver density dilutes the colour, washing it toward grey.
  • High contrast: silver adds density in the shadows and steepens the curve.

That combination is unusual. Most processes trade one for the other; bleach bypass gives you desaturated and contrasty at the same time, which is why the look is so distinctive and why it became a cinema signature (Saving Private Ryan, Seven, Minority Report, Se7en-era music video work).

This bank documents the same chemistry from the other direction in color-science-why-film-cannot-be-faked.md, and it is worth noting the connection: Eterna Bleach Bypass is Fujifilm simulating a process, not a stock, one of only two simulations in the camera that model a treatment rather than an emulsion.

Why the base does most of the work

Fujifilm's documented behaviour for Eterna Bleach Bypass:

  • Lowest saturation of all colour simulations: but importantly, "the desaturation is uniform across the spectrum with almost no hue shifts; its hue map matches ETERNA almost exactly, just with saturation floored and contrast maxed."
  • Washed-out highlights plus very dark shadows are the hallmark.
  • On real film, shots destined for bleach bypass were exposed about a stop under.

That last point is a first-party production note and it is the direct source of this recipe's EC −2/3 to 0. It is not a stylistic preference for moodiness; it is how the process was actually shot.

The uniform-desaturation detail matters more than it looks. Because EBB desaturates without shifting hues, colour information survives in a usable form, a red coat is still recognisably red, just drained. That is what makes Color —viable and worthwhile: it recovers the last traces of colour so faces stay human instead of going to grey putty. On a base that desaturated unevenly, +1 would produce a colour cast rather than a recovery.

The settings, and the one that is doing the least obvious work

  • Shadow —with — and —: an asymmetric curve, deliberately. Bleach bypass's silver retention deepens shadows dramatically while the highlights go washed out rather than clipping. So: harden the bottom (+2), leave the top alone (0), and give it headroom (—) so the highlights bleach out softly rather than blowing. — rather than negative is the correct reading of "washed-out highlights" You want them pale and controlled, not compressed and grey.
  • WB —ed / —lue. The cold silver-steel cast. This is one of very few recipes in the bank with a negative Red shift, and the reason is that retained metallic silver is neutral-to-cool, so a bleach-bypass frame skews away from warmth. Pushing blue positive and red negative moves it further than either would alone.
  • Color —: see above. The counterintuitive setting: adding colour to a look defined by having none. It is a floor, not a boost.
  • Clarity —, Sharpness —, Grain —/—: the hard metallic grit, and a justified deviation from the Clarity—default. Retained silver has a physical texture; the process is famous for looking harsh. This is one of only three recipes in the bank at Clarity —or above (Tri-X at +3 and Pan F Plus 50 at +2 being the others), and here. Unlike those two, the justification is aesthetic rather than a datasheet claim. Named as such.
  • ISO to 12800: the highest ceiling of any creative look here. Night streets are the intended territory, and real sensor noise on top of Strong grain suits a look that wants to feel degraded.

Why "noir" rather than "cinema"

Bleach bypass in cinema is usually applied to war, crime and dystopia. It is a genre signal. This recipe aims it at a narrower target: urban night and overcast street, rain, brutalist architecture. The specific choices that make it noir rather than generically cinematic:

  • The cold WB. Cinema bleach bypass is often neutral or even warm (Saving Private Ryan's is warm-grey); noir is cold.
  • Shadow —ather than a moderate value. Noir lives in the shadows, and lifted blacks would read as documentary.
  • Underexposure as default, which is both the historical process note and the genre's visual grammar.

It is deliberately unflattering to faces. Clarity —plus Shadow —plus a cold cast is close to the worst combination available for skin. That is the intent, the moody-portrait use is for character, not beauty. For flattering low-light portraiture use Fashion Editorial or AP's Portra instead.

The pairing worth noticing is with Matte Editorial: same Eterna family, exactly inverted. Matte lifts shadows and softens texture; this crushes shadows and hardens texture. Both are desaturated. That the same hue map can support two such opposite moods is a direct consequence of the fact that Fujifilm built EBB by taking Eterna and "flooring saturation and maxing contrast", the colour science is shared, the tonality is not.

For colour-forward night work. Neon, signage, wet reflections. Use CineStill 800T instead. This recipe drains exactly the colours that look makes its subject.

Validation status

Creative design, with an unusual amount of process grounding: the desaturation-plus-contrast mechanism, the uniform-hue-map behaviour, and the one-stop-under exposure practice are all documented rather than invented. What is not validated is the specific parameter set, no reference imagery has been matched against it.

Drop noir/bleach-bypass film stills or reference frames into references/ to tune. Note that cinema bleach bypass references will generally be warmer than this recipe, since the noir framing is a deliberate narrowing, if you want the Saving Private Ryan register rather than the noir one, WB near neutral (—/—) is the change.

Test priority:

  1. A night street with mixed artificial light. The core condition. Does Shadow —with — hold streetlamp highlights while the blacks stay inky, or does it lose both ends?
  2. A frame with one strong colour in it, a red sign, a blue door. Tests whether Color —on a floored base recovers a recognisable hue or just a grey with a suggestion of tint.
  3. A face, to establish how unflattering it actually is. Useful to know precisely, since the "moody portrait" use case is offered in the recipe.
  4. Wet brutalist concrete in overcast light, which is the single subject this look was aimed at and where it should be at its strongest.
