Part 0: what the source actually says, and how much of it is first-hand
The reference is the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute's entry for Austurbane, a portmanteau of austere and urbane, researched and named by Alex Edwards and also filed as Austere-Urbane.
This was drafted twice. The first pass worked from search results quoting the entry, because cari.institute could not be fetched directly. The second pass read the page and its image corpus directly, after a direct request returned the full page. That discrepancy is recorded in the research notes, because it changes which primary sources can be reached from here.
The first-hand read confirmed the second-hand summary in full and added three things: the attribution, the alternate name, and the image corpus in Part 1. No setting changed as a result, which is worth stating plainly rather than quietly, because it is the only evidence available that the search-summary route was not distorting the brief.

Part 1: the image corpus, which is what settles the subject
CARI links an Are.na channel from the entry, and it holds 24 images. Every one is brand identity or packaging work, and they are dated between 2017 and 2021: The Torrance, Origin, Buenavista Lanzarote, Classique Occasions, Balzac, Stonemade, Rare by Nature, Marco, Æcorn Aperitifs, Claudiana Beautanica.
Three things fall out of that list which the written description alone would not have settled.
- The subject is a product on a surface, not a room. Every project is a brand identity, so the frames are packaging, printed collateral and staged objects. That is why this recipe is built for still life on a tabletop and why North Light keeps the interiors and architecture brief. It is also what licenses Clarity +2, because a tabletop has no roofline to fringe.
- The stone is literal. Two of the ten projects are named Stonemade and Rare by Nature. Granite, marble and rough stone are the actual products in several frames rather than a styling note, which moves material texture from a nice-to-have to the thing being photographed.
- The refraction has a source. Æcorn Aperitifs and Claudiana Beautanica are bottled goods. Glass on a lit surface is where the prismatic element in the description comes from, which is why the recipe protects a pale scattered spectrum with Color Chrome Effect Strong and FX Blue Off rather than treating refraction as an abstract flourish.
The images are not reproduced here, and none were downloaded into the reference set. CARI's own notice is that its collection is for research and analysis rather than free assets, and this bank is built to be sold, which makes that binding.
Part 2: the style it descends from
Corporate Memphis is the flat geometric illustration style that dominated technology branding from the late 2010s, largely traced to the Alegria system built for Facebook in 2017. Austurbane is what happens when that visual system is applied to something that wants to look expensive: the same staged product layouts and the same generous whitespace, with the flat playful colour swapped for stone, metal and hard light.
Part 3: translating an aesthetic into a camera problem
Most recipes in this bank start from a film datasheet or from a documented base behaviour. This one starts from a list of adjectives, so the first job is turning it into things a camera setting can be responsible for.
Six requirements fall out, in the order they will ruin a frame:
- Whitespace that stays a surface. The largest single area in a typical frame is a pale plaster wall, a paper backdrop or a white sweep. If it clips it stops being a material and becomes blank paper, and the composition loses its subject.
- A real black, in a graphic shape. The plant shadow is the entry's named signature device. It has to read as a hard silhouette, and the palette lists black first.
- Muted colour that is still colour. Beige, copper, bronze and gold are low-chroma warm hues. They are muted, and they are also the only colour in the frame, so they have to survive.
- Material texture. Granite, marble, rough stone and fabric. This is a genre about surfaces.
- One saturated exception. The prismatic or refractive element throws a spectrum. In an otherwise restricted frame it is the single most saturated thing present, and every instinct that mutes the palette threatens it.
- Consistency across a set. Staged commercial work is shot in runs, and the frames have to cut together in a lookbook.
Requirements 1 and 2 pull against each other, which is the same tension North Light is built around. The settlement is different here because the light is different: North Light copes with a window it cannot control, and this recipe is shot under light the photographer chose.
Part 4: the base, and why it is the whole recipe again
Requirement 3 rules out most of the lineup on colour, and requirement 1 with requirement 2 rules out most of the rest on tone shape. What survives has to be muted, hard at the bottom and soft at the top.
That combination is unusual. Fujifilm's published curve shapes give it to exactly one simulation.

The argument in one line
Classic Chrome is a high-contrast simulation that reads as gentle because its saturation is low, and this aesthetic is a dramatic look that reads as calm because its palette is restricted. They are the same trick.
That is worth stating plainly because it is counter-intuitive. Classic Chrome gets reached for as the muted option, the Kodachrome stand-in, the tasteful one. Fujifilm's own tonality data puts it second only to Velvia in overall hardness. The gentleness is entirely in the colour.
Three more things the official notes hand over
- Fujifilm recommends the simulation for "fashion, interior, and product photography". That is the complete subject list of this aesthetic, written by the manufacturer, and no other base in the lineup carries a recommendation that specific.
- It has no analog ancestor. Fujifilm states it is an imaginary film built to emulate the printed page of twentieth-century photojournalism magazines. Austurbane is a print and brand language as well, and the absence of an emulsion on either side of the comparison is what makes Grain Off a coherent decision rather than a lazy one.
- Suppressed magenta is a feature here. This bank's standing note is that it makes reds fall to terracotta and brick rather than staying pure. Terracotta and brick are copper and bronze. A property that has to be corrected for in most recipes is doing the palette's work for free in this one.
Why Astia lost, since it is the obvious high-key base
Astia is this bank's stated correct base for high-key work, on first-party grounds: soft highlights with saturation maintained, so a bright frame does not go pale and lifeless. Requirement 1 is exactly that.
It loses on the other two axes at once. Saturation maintained is the wrong answer to requirement 3, where the palette is the point of the aesthetic. And soft at both ends means the shadow has no floor, which forfeits requirement 2, the branch silhouette that the source entry names as the signature device. The bank's own note on Astia is that any real depth has to come from DR or Shadow rather than from the simulation, and buying that depth back with a positive Shadow value on a base designed to be soft is a worse position than starting from a base that is hard there already.
Worth recording rather than burying: if this recipe fails in testing because the whitespace goes chalky, Astia with Color −2 and Shadow +2 is the rebuild, and it is a genuinely different design rather than a tweak.
Part 5: the settlement between whitespace and black
Three settings share the work, and the interesting one is a zero.

Stated as a rule: on this subject the drama comes from the light and from the base's native curve, and the tone controls exist only to protect the whitespace. It is close to the inverse of how the creative looks in this bank are usually built, where the curve does the shaping.
The comparison with North Light is instructive because both land on Shadow 0 for opposite reasons. North Light sits at 0 because DR400 has already opened the low end and any further lift produces the grey-cornered amateur interior look. This recipe sits at 0 because the base is hard there and any further hardening would crush the material. Same number, different problem, and neither is a default.
Part 6: muting without losing the metals
Requirement 3 and requirement 5 are in direct conflict. Everything that mutes a frame also mutes the spectrum thrown by a prism, and the entry names both.
The resolution is to do the muting with the base and the styling, and to spend the colour controls on protecting the exceptions.
- Color 0. Classic Chrome is already the subdued base with suppressed magenta. Pulling further down takes gold to beige and bronze to grey-brown, and once the metals lose their hue the frame stops being about materials and requirement 4 goes with it. This is the setting most likely to be argued with, and the variant table carries the Color −1 version for pure white-on-white product work where there are no metals to lose.
- Color Chrome Effect Strong. The mechanism matters. Fujifilm's own account is that it detects gradation and creates tonality while maintaining contrast, rather than raising saturation. It acts on colours that are already saturated. In a frame that is overwhelmingly warm-neutral it has almost nothing to touch, so its entire effect lands on the refracted spectrum, the amber bottle, the single ochre textile. Strong is safe here for the same reason it would be reckless on a landscape: there is nearly nothing for it to act on.
- Color Chrome FX Blue Off. There is no blue in the catalogued palette. The only blue that occurs is the blue band of a refraction, which is pale by nature, and FX Blue deepens blues toward navy. On this sensor the point sharpens: X-Trans V already renders blue more deeply than X-Trans IV on Classic Chrome specifically, so Off on the X-T5 is not the absence of blue depth, it is the X-Trans IV Weak position.
- White balance +2 Red and −1 Blue. Classic Chrome has natively cool shadows, which Fujifilm states directly, so a warm correction on this base is documented rather than decorative. The asymmetry between the two axes is deliberate. Red carries the copper and bronze and pulls the shadows out of the cool cast. Blue stops at one notch because whitespace is the largest area in frame, and a heavier yellow lean turns oat plaster into cream, which reads as a 2010s Instagram filter rather than as an austere surface.
Part 7: texture, and why this recipe can afford what North Light could not
Clarity +2 here against Clarity +1 there, on a bank whose standing position is restraint.
Clarity is a local-contrast operator, so its visible effect scales with how fast tone changes across an edge, and it has two very different behaviours. On dense small-scale variation it flatters: rough granite, travertine, unglazed ceramic, raw linen, the tooth of uncoated paper. On a long high-contrast edge it fringes: a roofline against bright sky, a mullion against a lit window.
A styled tabletop is entirely the first kind. That is why the number goes up, and why the macro variant goes further still. The one place it can still fringe in this genre is the shadow edge on a flat pale wall, which is why that is an explicit item on the test list rather than an assumption.
Sharpness stays at +1 for the house reason. The X-T5 has no optical low-pass filter, so it resolves close to Nyquist already and a given value does more work than the same number on a OLPF body.
Grain Off is the largest departure from this bank's habits and has three independent reasons behind it:
- The aesthetic has no film in it. It is a commercial digital language dated to the late 2010s, and grain would be a costume from a different decade.
- The base has no emulsion behind it. Classic Chrome is an imaginary film by Fujifilm's own statement, so there is no stock whose grain structure would be the reference.
- The surfaces are wrong for it. Large flat evenly-toned areas of plaster, paper and white sweep are the worst case for grain, which needs detail to sit in and reads as blotch without it. This is the same argument that took Grain from Strong and Large down to Weak and Small on North Light, pushed one step further because there is no film claim to preserve.
Two recipes in this bank already run Grain Off. Both do it for the same underlying reason, which is that nothing in the look is asking for film.

It is the first recipe here designed against a catalogued aesthetic entry rather than a film stock, a creator's post or a mood board, and the sourcing note in Part 0 exists because that is a weaker evidence base than a datasheet and should be visible as such.
Part 9: honest limits
- No frames. A designed look with no test shots, reasoned from Fujifilm's published base behaviour and from the documented behaviour of the controls. That is the creative-design tier and nothing more.
- The reference is first-hand but thin. The CARI entry is one paragraph and the corpus is 24 images, which is a small sample to characterise an aesthetic that ran for eight years. The projects are also weighted toward 2018 and 2019, so the "to present" half of the era is asserted by CARI rather than shown, and a look that drifted after 2021 would not be visible here. The Brand Identity is where to check that.
- Whitespace is untested and it is the largest risk. Requirement 1 is the recipe's central promise, and the white-on-white frame in the test list is the only thing that can confirm Highlight −1 on this base holds pale plaster rather than letting it chalk out.
- Color 0 is the contested setting. A muted palette argues for negative, and the argument here is that the muting belongs to the base and the styling. If the metals still read grey-brown in testing, the fix is warmth in the white balance rather than more Color, because Color lifts the beige along with everything else.
- No measurement underneath any of it. Unlike the colour negatives in this bank, no characteristic curve exists for a film simulation, so hard and soft here are Fujifilm's descriptions rather than numbers. The Measuring film curves from datasheets — method, calibration, and its limits curve work applies to stocks, not to simulations.
- No video version. Movie mode drops Grain, both Chrome effects and Clarity, which removes three of the settings carrying this look. A video derivation would need its own build rather than a translation.

Why Classic Chrome
Fujifilm recommends this simulation for "fashion, interior, and product photography" and pitches it as the first look to reach for when you want a cool photo. That is the entire subject list of this aesthetic, named by the manufacturer, and it is rare enough that it deserves to be the opening argument rather than a footnote.
The design brief backs it up in three places at once.
- Muted colour is native. Fujifilm's own comparison against Provia is "more subdued with suppressed magenta and cool shadows". Suppressed magenta is why reds on this base fall to terracotta and brick rather than staying pure red, and terracotta and brick are the copper-and-bronze end of the palette this aesthetic is built from. The base delivers the restriction. The recipe does not have to spend a setting on it.
- The tone shape is the aesthetic's lighting, in a curve. Fujifilm publishes Classic Chrome as hard at the shadow end and soft at the highlight end, and second only to Velvia in overall contrast. That is a dramatic base wearing a quiet palette, which is precisely what austere-and-urbane means. Hard shadows keep the branch silhouette graphic. The soft highlight end keeps whitespace as a surface rather than as blown paper.
- It has no film ancestor. Fujifilm says Classic Chrome is an imaginary film created to emulate the printed page of twentieth-century magazines. This aesthetic is a print and brand language too, born on lookbooks and in magazines like Kinfolk. There is no emulsion either side of the comparison, and that is why this recipe carries no grain.

The tone curve does almost nothing, deliberately
Two settings out of the whole table touch tone, and one of them is a zero that had to be argued for.
- Highlight −1. Whitespace is the largest area in a typical frame, so plaster, paper and a white sweep have to hold gradation instead of going to paper. The highlight end is already the soft one on this base, and the standing note in this bank is that Highlight −1 is usually enough here while −2 goes limp. Limp whitespace is the failure mode of every high-key look, so this stops at one notch.
- Shadow 0, which reads as a non-decision and is not one. Classic Chrome's shadow end is hard enough that this bank's own tone-curve table says the base needs a Shadow lift just to reach normal shadow detail. Declining that lift is the whole drama budget. It also means there is nothing left to add: a positive value stacks hardness on an already-hard end and crushes the granite and the rough stone, which are the materials the aesthetic is actually about. The shadow shape comes from the light being hard, not from the curve being crushed.
DR200 rather than DR400 follows from the same reasoning. Dynamic Range modes underexpose and then lift everything below the highlights, so every extra stop of highlight insurance is paid for in shadow depth. This is staged work under light the photographer controls, so one stop covers the specular on a brass fitting or a marble edge and there is no window fight to win. Two stops would buy insurance against a problem this genre does not have, and spend the blacks to get it. The floor lands at ISO 250, which suits a clean look with no grain to hide behind.
The colour is where the restraint is not
Color sits at 0, and the obvious move was −1 or −2 for a palette described as muted.
The reason it stays is that the muting in this aesthetic is a restricted palette rather than a global desaturation. Within that restriction, brass is meant to read as brass and copper as copper. Classic Chrome is already the subdued base, so pulling Color down from there takes gold to beige and bronze to grey-brown, and the moment the metals lose their hue the frame stops being about materials. The restriction comes from the base and from the styling. It does not need to come from the dial as well.
Color Chrome Effect Strong is the other half of that argument. It works by detecting gradation in colours that are already saturated and giving them tonal separation, rather than by raising saturation. In a frame that is ninety per cent warm-neutral, it has almost nothing to act on, so its whole effect lands on the few saturated things present: a refracted spectrum on a wall, a single ochre textile, an amber bottle. Those get depth while the beige is left untouched. Strong is the correct setting precisely because there is so little for it to do.
Color Chrome FX Blue Off is the same logic run in reverse. There is no blue in this palette by definition, and the one blue that does occur is the blue band of a prismatic refraction, which should stay pale and delicate. FX Blue deepens blues toward navy, which would turn a scattered spectrum into something heavier than the light that made it. Worth knowing on this body: X-Trans V already renders blue more deeply than X-Trans IV on Classic Chrome, so Off here still gives more blue depth than Off would on the older sensor.
The rest
- White Balance Daylight, +2 Red and −1 Blue. Classic Chrome has natively cool shadows, which Fujifilm states outright, so warming it is a documented correction rather than seasoning. The Red carries the copper and bronze and lifts the shadows out of the base's cool cast. The Blue shift stops at one notch because whitespace is the biggest area in the frame and a heavier yellow lean turns oat plaster into cream, which reads dated rather than austere. Fixed rather than Auto for the usual reason: this is shot in sets, and a lookbook has to cut together.
- Grain Off. Three reasons stack. The aesthetic is a contemporary commercial look with no film reference in it, the base is an imaginary film with no emulsion ancestor, and the frames are dominated by large flat evenly-toned areas of plaster, paper and white sweep, which is the worst possible surface for grain to sit on. Two recipes in this bank already run Grain Off and both do it for the same reason: nothing in the look is asking for film.
- Sharpness +1. Rough stone, unglazed ceramic, raw linen and the tooth of paper are the subject. The X-T5 has no optical low-pass filter, so it already resolves close to Nyquist and a given Sharpness value does more here than the same number on a OLPF body. - Clarity +2, which North Light could not afford and this recipe can. Clarity is a local-contrast operator, so it flatters dense small-scale variation and fringes on long hard edges. A tabletop of granite and linen is all of the first kind and none of the second, where a building is full of rooflines and mullions. The usual penalty, slower shot-to-shot saving, is free on a subject that does not move.
- Exposure. A reflective meter reads a bright frame as too bright and pulls it to grey, which is exactly wrong when most of the frame is near-white. Start at +1/3 and go to +2/3 for a white-on-white layout. Drop to 0 when the backdrop is dark stone or graphite.
- ISO 250 to 3200. The floor is set by DR200. The ceiling is lower than this bank's usual 6400 because there is no grain in this recipe for sensor noise to hide inside, and the look is clean by definition.

There is no datasheet for an aesthetic, so this is grounded in Fujifilm's published design statements for Classic Chrome and for each base rejected above, in this bank's Dynamic Range & Tone Curve — the contrast controls tone-curve table of native simulation curves, in the Color, Color Chrome Effect & FX Blue — the saturation/richness controls colour control notes on what Color Chrome Effect actually does, and in a second-hand reading of the CARI entry as described in the provenance note.

Test priority: in order
- A hard shadow across a pale wall. The whole recipe in one frame. Is the shadow graphic and dark with the wall texture still readable inside it, and does the lit plaster hold gradation rather than going to paper? If the shadow is a black hole, Shadow goes to −1 and the drama moves back to the lighting.
- A white-on-white product layout, metered at +2/3. The whitespace test, and the one this look lives or dies on. If the frame reads grey, the exposure compensation is too low rather than the tone curve being wrong.
- Copper or brass against beige. The colour test. Do the metals read as metal at Color 0, or has the base's suppressed magenta taken them to grey-brown? If they are dead, the answer is more Red in the white balance rather than more Color, because Color would lift the beige with them.
- A prism or a cut-glass object throwing a spectrum. Confirms CCE Strong is putting gradation into the coloured band and that FX Blue Off is keeping it pale.
- Rough granite or travertine at 100 per cent. The Clarity +2 check. Look along the shadow edge as well as at the stone: a shadow on a flat wall is the one place in this genre where a local-contrast operator can still fringe.
What would count as the recipe being wrong rather than needing a tweak: if the frames read cold and clinical rather than warm and composed even after the white balance goes to +3 Red, then Classic Chrome's cool shadows are stronger than the correction can reach and the look needs a base with warmth built in, which puts Nostalgic Neg. Back on the table with its amber shadows accepted as the price.
Pro tip: This base is dramatic and quiet at the same time, which is the whole trick. Classic Chrome is the second hardest-contrast simulation Fujifilm makes, after Velvia, and almost nobody uses it that way because its low saturation reads as gentle. Austere colour over hard tone is what separates this look from a merely beige one. If your frames feel flat, check the light before you touch the tone curve.
Pro tip: Shadow 0 is a decision, not a default. This bank's tone-curve table says Classic Chrome needs a Shadow lift just to reach normal shadow detail. Sitting at 0 is declining that lift on purpose, and it is where the graphic branch shadow comes from. Going positive stacks hardness on an already-hard end and crushes the stone.
Pro tip: Meter up, not down. Most of the frame is near-white, so a reflective meter will pull it to grey and hand you a muddy version of the look. Start at +1/3, use +2/3 for white on white, and only return to 0 when the backdrop itself is dark.
Pro tip: Grain Off is correct here and it is unusual in this bank. Every other creative look carries at least Weak grain because it is chasing something photographic. This one is chasing a printed brand language from 2018, on a simulation Fujifilm built as an imaginary film with no emulsion behind it, over large flat plaster surfaces where grain has nothing to sit in and reads as blotch.

Which cameras this fits
Built and measured on the X-T5. The X100VI, X-H2 and X-T50 carry the same 40.2 MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, so this is not adapted for them — it is the same recipe. On an X-Trans IV body it needs one documented change.
