Clean Girl — Design Analysis & Derivation

How this look was derived, and why every control does what it does. The settings themselves are in the pack.

Creative original. There is no film to be faithful to here, the target is an aesthetic, so validation means matching reference imagery rather than a datasheet. See validation-methodology.md and the creative README. Settings in the notes.


The design brief

The "clean girl" aesthetic is a specific, well-defined visual language that emerged from beauty and lifestyle social content: white-dominant, minimal, luminous, textureless. Slicked hair, gold hoops, linen, ceramics, white walls, glass of water on a marble counter. The photographic requirements are unusually precise:

  1. Whites must read white, not cream, not warm, not "film white." The moment a wall drifts yellow the whole aesthetic collapses into something else (cosy, vintage, nostalgic).
  2. Skin must be luminous and healthy, with a soft peach glow. Bright but never pallid, and never clinical.
  3. Shadows lift but do not flatten. There is still dimension; this is not a matte look.
  4. Zero texture. No grain, no clarity, no grit. Texture reads as "film" and film reads as the opposite of clean.

That fourth requirement is what makes this the odd one out in a bank built on film emulation. It is the only recipe here whose brief is explicitly anti-film.

Why Auto White Priority is the engine, not a detail

Every other recipe in this bank uses a fixed WB (for repeatability) or plain Auto (for versatility). This one uses AUTO WHITE PRIORITY, and it is the single most consequential setting in the recipe.

Fujifilm's own description (manual p.126, catalogued in white-balance.md) is "Auto WB tuned for whiter whites under incandescent light" It actively removes warmth rather than preserving it. Standard AUTO would keep some ambience; AUTO AMBIENCE PRIORITY would keep all of it. For an aesthetic whose first requirement is neutral white under whatever light is available, a bedroom, a café, a bathroom mirror, the mode that fights warm casts is the correct one.

The tiny — / — shift on top is the counterweight: pure neutrality on skin reads clinical and slightly ill. One notch of warmth in each direction is enough to keep complexions alive without reintroducing the cast the base WB just removed.

This is a real trade. Auto White Priority means the recipe is not colour-repeatable frame to frame. It will interpret each scene. That violates the bank's usual rule (fixed WB for colour-critical work). It is accepted here because the brief is "whites are white wherever you are," which is exactly what an adaptive mode delivers and a fixed one cannot.

Why Astia, and why it is engineered rather than chosen by feel

Fujifilm's official specification for Astia is "the transition from highlights to shadows is smooth, while saturation is maintained" Soft at both ends of the curve without paying for it in colour (see fujifilm-official-design-notes.md).

That combination is precisely what a high-key look needs. The failure mode of bright, lifted photography is that it goes pale and lifeless. Push exposure on a normal profile and colour drains out with the contrast. Astia's saturation retention is the defence against that, and it is why this recipe can run +2/3 to +1⅓ EC and still hold a peach glow in the skin.

Two more official Astia facts make it the right base here:

  • It is designed for bright, uncontrolled outdoor light (dappled sun) and mixed colour temperature, a description of exactly the messy real-world conditions this aesthetic is shot in.
  • It is the most flattering of the colour simulations for skin.

Bases considered and rejected:

Base Why not
Pro Neg. Std Genuinely close, and the best runner-up. Soft gradations, excellent skin, built for studio light. Rejected because its colour is more restrained than Astia's and the peach-glow requirement suffers. Offered as the "more studio polish" variant (with Pro Neg. Hi) for anyone shooting strobes.
Provia Neutral, but its contrast is normal — the high-key push flattens it into blandness rather than luminosity.
Classic Chrome Carries suppressed magenta and cool shadows by design. Both fight the brief: cool shadows are the opposite of luminous, and suppressed magenta kills the blush.
Eterna Soft, but "an art of omission" — Fujifilm deliberately suppresses saturation so no colour stands out. That is the Matte Editorial brief, not this one.

The tone curve, and the one number that separates this from its neighbours

Highlight —/ Shadow —, and the asymmetry is the whole point.

  • Highlight —+ — exists because of the exposure compensation. At +1 EC, a white wall or a linen sleeve is sitting close to clipping; — supplies the headroom and —supplies the soft roll-off so the whites read bright with detail rather than blown. Fujifilm's own note is that Astia is already soft at both ends, which is why the recipe stops at −1.5 rather than −2. Past that you are flattening gradation the base already provided, and the frame goes chalky.
  • Shadow —, deliberately not —. This is the value that distinguishes clean girl from every adjacent aesthetic. At −2 the blacks lift into matte territory and the look becomes Matte Editorial or Pastel Dream. Faded, calm, retro-adjacent. Clean girl is fresh, which requires the frame to still have a floor. −1 lifts the shadows enough to feel airy while keeping dimension in a jawline, a fold of linen, a shadow under a shelf.

If you remember one thing about tuning this recipe: the difference between "clean girl" and "faded lifestyle" is one notch of Shadow.

Grain —: the deliberate outlier

This is one of only two recipes in the bank with Grain fully — (the other being the Kodachrome 25 reference, for the opposite reason, RMS 9, the finest colour grain ever made).

Everywhere else in this bank grain is a fidelity requirement. Here it is a defect. Combined with — and Sharpness —, the frame has no micro-texture at any scale: no grain, no local contrast, no edge acutance. That is what "clean" means photographically, and it also makes this the fastest-saving recipe in the bank and fully HEIF-compatible.

ISO capped at 1600 for the same reason. Sensor noise is texture, and texture is the enemy. The cap is a statement about the aesthetic's requirements, not the camera's: this look lives in good light, and if you are at ISO 6400 you are not shooting clean girl any more.

Where it sits, and what it is not

The nearest neighbour is Fashion Editorial, and they are opposites on the axis that matters: both want flawless skin and controlled colour, but Fashion Editorial gets its authority from deep blacks (Shadow —) and this gets its freshness from lifted ones. Shooting the same subject on both is the clearest demonstration in the bank of what the Shadow control actually does to a mood.

Validation status

Creative design. There is no datasheet and there never will be. The evidence tier for a look like this is reference imagery. Drop tears, saved posts, mood-board frames into references/ and the recipe can be tuned toward them.

The two things worth testing first:

  1. Whites under warm indoor light (tungsten, warm LED). This is the exact condition AUTO WHITE PRIORITY exists for and the recipe's core claim. If walls still drift cream, the fix is a Custom WB measured — a white surface, not a bigger WB shift.
  2. Skin at +1 EC and above. The claim is that Astia's saturation retention keeps a peach glow where other bases would go pallid. If faces read washed out, drop EC to —/3 before touching Color, the recipe is designed to be bright, but there is a point past which no base holds colour.
