Matte Editorial is a Fujifilm film simulation recipe for X-Trans V cameras. Every setting is published below in full, then how it was derived and why each control sits where it does.

The recipe

A muted, faded, soft, airy lifestyle-magazine look (Kinfolk / minimalist editorial): desaturated tones, matte lifted blacks, gentle highlights, a calm, expensive-looking restraint.

Why

  • Eterna: low-contrast, muted, rich-shadow cine base: the natural foundation for a soft matte look.
  • Highlight −2 + Shadow −2: the signature matte curve: soft highlights and lifted, un-crushed blacks (nothing hits pure black).
  • Color −2, CCE Weak: desaturated, calm, restrained palette.
  • Clarity −2 + Sharpness −1: soft, dreamy, smooth mid-tones (the deliberate deviation for the airy softness).
  • Expose +1/3 to +2/3: bright and high-key. Overexposure enhances the faded, airy feel.

Tuning

  • Warmer / cosier: WB +2R/−2B. Cooler / Scandi: WB −1R/+1B.
  • More faded: Shadow −2, Highlight −2 with Exposure +1.
  • Video: Eterna + WB + DR (manual) + Tone Curve + Sharpness transfer. Clarity/grain drop → keep Sharpness −1 and lean on the flat tone curve. A mist filter adds the soft matte feel on video.

Pro tip: Eterna already shifts blue toward cyan (2026-07-20, official). Fujifilm states Eterna moves blue tones "toward cyan" so the sky "will complement the story" instead of competing with it. So this base needs less cooling than instinct suggests, if skies read too teal, nudge +Red / −Blue rather than adding more cool. Two more official facts that shape this recipe: Eterna carries a 12-stop dynamic range, "comparable to F-Log," with "room for post production". Real latitude in reserve, which is why a strong negative Highlight here doesn't turn to mush, and its highlight and shadow tones are both soft by design. Fujifilm calls the whole approach "an art of omission": saturation is suppressed so "a particular colour would not stand out" across a sequence. That is also why a Eterna stills recipe needs a Color lift the video version doesn't, a stills viewer has only one frame to be moved by.

ISO 500 is the sweet spot, not a compromise (measured 2026-07-27). DR400 pins the ISO floor at 500, and that is exactly where the X-T5's conversion-gain step sits, so it is the cleanest ISO in that region, not a tax you pay for using DR400. ISO 640 is the expensive next click: roughly 0.35 EV of dynamic range for one third-stop, against about 0.02 EV for the step from 400 to 500. In good light, hold ISO at 500 and control exposure with aperture and shutter. Measured from published read-noise and PDR data, see Dynamic Range & Tone Curve, the contrast controls.

Why it looks like this

The design brief

The look this recipe targets has a name in publishing, the Kinfolk / minimalist lifestyle aesthetic that dominated independent magazines and Scandinavian-influenced editorial from roughly 2011 onward. Its properties are specific:

  1. Matte blacks. Nothing in the frame reaches pure black. The shadow end lifts to a soft charcoal, which is the single defining feature and the source of the name.
  2. Soft, un-clipped highlights. The top end rolls off long before white.
  3. Desaturated but not monochrome. Colour is present, muted, and unhurried.
  4. Bright overall. The frame sits high on the histogram. This is a high-key look despite its restraint.
  5. Soft texture. Smooth mid-tones. Nothing etched.
  6. Calm. The emotional register is quiet and, not incidentally, expensive-looking.

The technical translation is a tone curve compressed at both ends and shifted upward, with saturation pulled back and micro-contrast removed.

Why Eterna, and three official facts that shape the whole recipe

Eterna is Fujifilm's cinema simulation, and their published design notes (Fujifilm Official Design Notes, from the X Stories / product pages) contain three statements that matter here more than any aesthetic reasoning:

  1. "An art of omission." Fujifilm suppresses saturation on Eterna specifically so that "a particular colour would not stand out" across a sequence of shots. That is the desaturation requirement, built into the base rather than dialled in. It also explains something counterintuitive about this recipe: a Eterna stills grade needs more colour than the video version does, because a stills viewer has one frame in which to be moved rather than ninety minutes. (This recipe still runs Color −2 because the brief is muted, but that is a choice on top of an already-muted base, and it is why the frame doesn't go grey.)

  2. Both ends of the curve are soft by design. Highlight and shadow tones are both gentle on Eterna. So Highlight −2 / Shadow −2 here is stacking softness onto softness, which is the intent, and also the recipe's structural risk (below).

  3. A 12-stop dynamic range, "comparable to F-Log," with "room for post production." This is the fact that makes the recipe work rather than turn to mush. Aggressive negative Highlight on a normal base sands the top end into a flat grey. On Eterna there is genuine latitude in reserve, so −2 compresses rather than destroys.

One more, and it is the most useful for tuning: Eterna deliberately shifts blue tones toward cyan, so that sky "will complement the story" rather than competing with it. This base therefore needs less cooling than instinct suggests. If skies read too teal on this recipe, the fix is to nudge +Red / −Blue. Adding more cool makes it worse. That is why the WB sits at a near-neutral +1R/−1B rather than the cool shift a Scandinavian look might seem to want.

Bases considered and rejected:

Astia Soft, but saturation is maintained by design, you would be fighting the base to desaturate it. Astia is the right choice when you want soft tone with colour, which is Pastel Dream and Clean Girl.
Classic Chrome Low saturation, but a documented hard shadow end, the exact opposite of a matte black point. You would spend the entire Shadow range just getting back to neutral.
Pro Neg. Std Soft gradations and good skin, but normal saturation and no latitude story. Workable, less well-suited.
Eterna Bleach Bypass Low saturation but high contrast, see Bleach Bypass Noir. The two are opposites despite sharing a family name.

The matte curve, explained properly

Highlight −2 / Shadow −2 + DR400 + EC +1/3 to +2/3. All four settings serve one goal, and the order matters:

  • Shadow −2 is the matte itself. Negative Shadow lifts the bottom of the curve, so the darkest tone in the frame lands at charcoal rather than black. This is the setting. Everything else supports it.
  • Highlight −2 compresses the top so the frame doesn't clip when you... -...expose +1/3 to +2/3, which shifts the whole thing upward into the high-key register the look requires. Overexposure is not incidental here. It is how a faded look is produced rather than merely a low-contrast one.

  • DR400 supplies the headroom that makes the overexposure safe.

The structural risk, stated plainly: this recipe has no tonal reserve left. Eterna is soft at both ends and the recipe adds −2 at both ends on top. In already-flat light. Heavy overcast, deep shade, an unlit interior, there is nothing left to give and the frame reads mushy rather than calm.

The fix in that situation is counterintuitive and worth memorising: raise Shadow toward 0 and let DR carry the highlights. Do not reach for Clarity. Clarity would add back mid-tone contrast, which is texture, which is the thing this look most needs to avoid. You would fix the flatness and lose the aesthetic. (Logged in the notes.)

Clarity −2 and Sharpness −1

The deliberate deviation from the bank's Clarity-0 default, and one of only three recipes here that go negative on Clarity (with Golden Hour Glow at −2 and Pastel Dream at −2).

Clarity −2 removes mid-tone local contrast: the surface of a linen tablecloth, the grain of a wooden table, the pores in skin all soften. In a look built on calm, texture is agitation. Sharpness −1 does the same at the edge scale.

Grain stays at Weak, Small rather than Off. This is a considered difference from Clean Girl: matte editorial is descended from print publishing, and a faint tooth is part of that heritage. Grain Off would push it toward the digital-clean register this look is specifically not.

The revealing comparison is with Pastel Dream: identical tone curves, opposite colour. −2/−2 with Color −2 gives muted calm. −2/−2 with Color +2 gives candy sweetness. That pair is the clearest demonstration in the bank that the tone curve sets the mood's temperature and the colour setting sets its personality. They are independent controls and can be mixed freely.

Validation status

Creative design. Aesthetic reference is the evidence tier.

Test priority:

  1. A frame in flat overcast light. This is the recipe's named failure mode. Does it read calm or mushy? If mushy, apply the Shadow-toward-0 fix above rather than assuming the recipe is broken.
  2. A frame with a genuine black object in it, a dark garment, a cast-iron pan, a shadowed doorway. The matte claim is that nothing reaches pure black. This checks whether Shadow −2 delivers charcoal or just grey mud.
  3. A blue sky or a blue-painted surface, to test the Eterna cyan shift. If it reads teal, +Red / −Blue is the fix, not more cooling.
