Part 0: two frames, two photographers, one register
Read from the design archive's look collection on 2026-08-25. Both frames were published by Colossal within days of each other and neither photographer has anything to do with the other:
- The Winston Taylor Photo Portrait Prize shortlist. A figure draped backwards over a round hay bale in a English field, arms hanging, a small white dog running into frame at the right edge.
- Jennifer Latour's botanical assemblages. Cut flowers wired onto a bare branch, standing in dune grass above a Irish sea inlet with a blue boat at anchor.
Different countries, different subjects, different intentions. What they share is exact enough to design against:

Two independent sources arriving at the same rendering is what separates this from a nice photograph. It is the house style of contemporary prize and gallery photography, and it was the largest coherent register in a 261-image photography and film window.
Part 1: the requirements, ranked by what ruins a frame
- The sky. Under heavy cloud the brightest thing in frame is a featureless white two or three stops above everything else, and it is usually a third of the picture. Clipped, it stops being weather and becomes a hole.
- Modelling. Flat light removes shape. A face with no cheekbone and a landscape with no form is the failure this register is always one step away from.
- Muted, with survivors. The palette is low chroma and the picture depends on one or two saturated things standing inside it. Every operation that mutes a frame also mutes those.
- Honest skin. In prize photography a cast reads as a filter, and a filter reads as a lesser photograph.
- Soft without being soft-focus. Medium-format film resolves enormous detail and never reads crisp. Those are different properties and the recipe has to separate them.
Requirements 1 and 2 pull against each other. Protecting the sky means softening the top end, and softening a base under already-flat light is how a picture becomes dull.
Part 2: Fujifilm answered the base question before it was asked
The Pro Neg pair is the only place in the lineup where Fujifilm publishes a rule rather than a preference. Std is "optimized for use in situations with good lighting and moderate contrast, such as studio photography". Hi "boosts contrast, creating shadows even in flat light".
This bank has already recorded the consequence: the choice between them is a lighting decision rather than a taste one, which is why North Light sits on Std for controlled interiors and names Hi as its exterior variant.
Heavy overcast is the definition of flat light, so requirement 2 is answered by the manufacturer.
The distinction is easy to misread and worth stating carefully. Pro Neg. Hi is not adding global contrast, which is a tone-curve operation and one this recipe performs in the opposite direction. It is putting modelling back: separating a cheekbone from a cheek, a fold from a sleeve, a hedgerow from the field behind it, when the sky has become a single enormous softbox and taken all of that away. Global range and local shape are different problems and this recipe uses different tools on each.

Sharing a base with Fashion Editorial
Fashion Editorial is also on Pro Neg. Hi and the two do not collide anywhere. It runs DR400 with Shadow +2 for deep studio blacks. This runs DR200 with Shadow −1 for an open low end. It sits at Color −1 for polish. This sits at Color −1 for restraint and pairs it with Color Chrome Effect Strong, which that recipe leaves at Weak.
Worth keeping both visible, because a reader comparing them learns more about what a simulation is than either recipe teaches alone.
Part 3: the pair that carries the colour
Requirement 3 is a contradiction stated as a requirement, and it needs two controls pointing opposite ways rather than one compromise.
- Color −1 takes the field down. Straw, sage and weathered timber are already low chroma. A notch of restraint stops the greens creeping toward postcard when the sun does briefly threaten.
- Color Chrome Effect Strong protects the survivors. Fujifilm's account of the control is that it detects gradation and creates tonality in colours that are already saturated, rather than raising saturation. In a frame that is overwhelmingly muted it has almost nothing to act on, so its whole effect lands on the red shirt, the hydrangea and the craspedia.
The pairing is the recipe. Color −1 with the Chrome effect Off produces a dull picture with flat accents. Color 0 with it Strong produces a normal cheerful landscape. Only the pair produces a quiet field with something alive in it.
This is the same mechanism Austurbane uses for a refracted spectrum in a beige room, and it generalises: when a look is muted with exceptions, mute with Color and protect with Color Chrome Effect.
Color Chrome FX Blue sits at Weak. A white sky and a milky sea are the two largest blue-adjacent areas in this register and neither is deep. Off would leave a pale sky flat. Strong on X-Trans V, which already renders blue more deeply than X-Trans IV, would give the weather a drama it does not have.
Part 4: the curve, and the one setting that is not optional
Highlight −1.5 is the milky-highlight signature, and Pro Neg. Hi needs a real value there because it is a contrast-adding base rather than a soft one.
DR200 rather than DR400 is the decision that protects the base choice. Fujifilm's dynamic-range modes underexpose and then lift everything below the highlights, so two stops of headroom would open the low end and remove the modelling the simulation was picked to supply. One stop covers the sky. Choosing DR400 here would undo a base decision with a range setting, which is the kind of quiet contradiction that makes a recipe feel wrong without anyone being able to say why.
Shadow −1 keeps the low end open, because this register has no true blacks in it.
Exposure compensation is the setting most likely to be skipped and the one that decides whether any of the rest works. A reflective meter reads a bright grey scene and pulls it toward middle grey, which produces the muddy version of this look that people make by accident and then blame on the weather. The working default is +2/3.
Part 5: honest limits
- No frames. Creative-design tier and nothing more.
- Two images is a small sample. Austurbane had a written entry with an era, a palette and a 24-image corpus behind it. This has two published frames and an inference. If a third and fourth frame from the same register contradict the reading, the reading moves.
- No era, no name, no attribution. The collection handed over pictures and provenance and deliberately no analysis. Everything characterising this register was read off the frames, which is a weaker starting position than a catalogued aesthetic and is why this section is longer than Austurbane's.
- The base decision rests on a phrase rather than a measurement. "Creating shadows even in flat light" is Fujifilm's description of Pro Neg. Hi, not a published curve. No characteristic curve exists for any simulation, so the whole argument in Part 2 is qualitative.
- The recipe is on the wrong side of its own rule the moment the sun appears. It is chosen by the weather, so it is the only look here with a stated expiry condition rather than a subject range.
- Medium format is not reproducible. The rendering being referenced comes partly from a larger negative and a longer lens at the same field of view, and no setting supplies either.

The recipe
The register contemporary prize and gallery photography actually lives in: heavy overcast, no sun anywhere, a white sky held as a surface, a low-chroma field of straw and sage and pale stone, and one or two saturated things surviving inside it. Built on the one simulation Fujifilm made specifically for flat light. Derivation in the notes.
Read from two frames published within days of each other by different photographers: the Winston Taylor Photo Portrait Prize shortlist and Jennifer Latour's botanical assemblages, both via Colossal. An English field and a Irish sea inlet, the same light and the same restraint.

Fujifilm already answered the base question
The Pro Neg pair is the one place in the lineup where Fujifilm states a rule rather than a preference: the choice between Hi and Std is a lighting decision. Std is for "good lighting and moderate contrast, such as studio photography". Hi "boosts contrast, creating shadows even in flat light".
Overcast is flat light. There is nothing to interpret.
That distinction is worth holding onto because it is easy to misread. Pro Neg. Hi is not adding global contrast here, which is what a tone curve does. It is putting modelling back into a face and a landscape that the weather has taken it out of, so a cheekbone and a fold of cloth still have shape when the sky is a single grey softbox. The tone curve then manages the overall range separately, and in this recipe it manages it downward.

Fashion Editorial is also on Pro Neg. Hi, and the two do not collide. That one is a studio look with deep blacks at Shadow +2 and DR400. This one is an outdoor look with milky highlights at Shadow −1 and DR200. Same base, opposite ends of the curve, which is an useful demonstration that a simulation is a starting position rather than a look.
Muted field, surviving accents
The two colour controls pull in opposite directions on purpose, and the pairing is the recipe's central idea.
- Color −1 takes the field down. Straw, sage, weathered timber and pale stone are already low-chroma, and a notch of restraint keeps them from creeping toward postcard.
- Color Chrome Effect Strong protects what is left. The control adds tonal separation to colours that are already saturated, and in a frame that is ninety per cent muted it has almost nothing to touch, so its entire effect lands on the red shirt, the purple hydrangea and the one yellow flower head. Those keep gradation while everything around them sits down.
Set the other way around, with Color at 0 and the Chrome effect Off, the same scene comes back as a slightly dull snapshot: the field no quieter and the accents flat.
Color Chrome FX Blue Weak rather than Off or Strong. A white overcast sky and a milky turquoise sea are the two largest blue-adjacent areas in this register and neither is deep. Weak keeps gradation in a pale sky. Strong on this sensor would push it toward a drama the weather does not have.
The sky is the technical problem
Under heavy overcast the brightest thing in frame is a featureless white sky, often two or three stops above everything else, and the entire look depends on it reading as a surface rather than as blank paper.
- Highlight −1.5. Pro Neg. Hi is a contrast-adding base, so it needs real softening at the top. This is the milky-highlight signature and it is where medium-format film gets its reputation.
- DR200, not DR400. One stop covers the sky. Two stops would lift the low end and remove the modelling that Pro Neg. Hi was chosen to supply, which would undo the base decision with a dynamic-range setting.
- Shadow −1. Slightly open, because this register has no true blacks in it, and because the structure is coming from the simulation rather than from the curve.
- Exposure +1/3 to +2/3, which is not optional. A reflective meter reads a bright grey scene and pulls it toward middle grey, and the result is the muddy version of this look that most people produce by accident. Go to +1 when the sky fills the top third.
The rest
- White Balance Daylight with +1 Red. Under heavy cloud the Daylight preset renders cool, and this register's defining honesty is that skin looks like skin. One notch of red corrects the overcast blue without warming the picture. The Shade preset overcorrects into gold and is the wrong tool.
- Grain Weak, Small. The reference is medium format, where grain is fine relative to the frame. Enough to stop the file reading as clinical.
- Sharpness 0 and Clarity −1. Medium-format film resolves enormous detail without ever reading crisp, and micro-contrast is what separates the two. Clarity negative also flatters skin under flat light, which is the one gift this weather gives.
- ISO 250 to 6400. Floor set by DR200. Overcast is dimmer than it looks and this is often a 1/125 at f/4 situation.

Validation tier: Creative design, field-test pending. Grounded in Fujifilm's stated rule for choosing between the Pro Neg pair, in the Color, Color Chrome Effect & FX Blue — the saturation/richness controls colour control notes on what Color Chrome Effect acts on, and in a reading of two published frames rather than a catalogued aesthetic. No frames have been shot with it.
Test priority: in order
- A person in an open field under full overcast, metered at +2/3. The whole recipe. Is the sky a surface, is the face modelled, and does the frame read quiet rather than dull?
- One saturated object in an otherwise muted scene. The Color −1 with Chrome Strong test, and the pairing this recipe is built on. If the accent has gone flat, the Chrome effect is not reaching and Color goes back to 0 before anything else changes.
- Skin, at +1 Red. The honesty test. If it reads cool the shift goes to +2. If it reads warm this is the wrong weather for the preset and a custom reading off a grey card settles it.
- A white sky at 100 per cent. Confirms Highlight −1.5 with DR200 is enough, or that the sky variant is the real recipe.
- The same scene on this and on Matte Editorial. Both are muted and low-contrast and they get there completely differently, one by flattening an already-flat base and one by adding structure and then softening the ends.
What would count as the recipe being wrong rather than needing a tweak: if faces read flat even with Pro Neg. Hi doing its stated job, then flat light needs more help than a simulation can give and the answer is a reflector rather than a setting.
Pro tip: This is the only recipe in the bank chosen by the weather rather than by the subject. Fujifilm's own rule for the Pro Neg pair is that the choice is a lighting decision, so the moment the sun comes out this recipe is on the wrong side of that rule. Switch to North Light's base, or wait.
Pro tip: Color down and Chrome up is a pair, not two settings. Muting a frame normally kills its accents too, and this register depends on one red shirt surviving a field of straw. Color −1 takes the field down while Color Chrome Effect Strong keeps depth in the few saturated things present, because it only acts on colours that are already saturated.
Pro tip: Meter up. Overcast is the classic case where a reflective meter hands you a grey, muddy version of a bright scene. Start at +1/3, use +2/3 as the working default, and +1 when the sky fills the top of the frame.

Which cameras this fits
Built and measured on the X-T5. The X100VI, X-H2 and X-T50 carry the same 40.2 MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, so this is not adapted for them — it is the same recipe. On an X-Trans IV body it needs one documented change.
