Pastel Dream is a Fujifilm film simulation recipe for X-Trans V cameras. Every setting is published below in full, then how it was derived and why each control sits where it does.

A soft, sweet, candy-pastel look. Light airy tones, gentle colour that reads sugared rather than saturated, flattering skin. Built on Astia (Fujifilm's soft profile) with a bright, lifted exposure.See creative README.

Why

  • Astia: soft contrast and flattering colour: the pastel-safe base.
  • Highlight −2 / Shadow −2 + DR400 + bright exposure: the pastel formula: colour kept (+2) but the tone around it lifted and flattened, so hues read as sugared tints.
  • WB −1R/−2B: a faint warm-cream lean (minus-blue warms, minus-red stops it going orange) for that milky pastel base.
  • Chrome effects Off: depth/richness is the opposite of pastel. Keep colours light.
  • Clarity −2, Sharpness −1: soft, dreamy rendering (justified deviation: softness is the look).

Variant: "Fruit Pastel" energy

For punchier candy colours, swap the base to Velvia and keep everything else (the community-proven vivid-base/lifted-tone trick): sweeter, louder pastels. Slightly riskier skin.

Pro tip (2026-07-20, official): Astia's official brief, "the transition from highlights to shadows is smooth, while saturation is maintained". Is why a pastel look survives on this base without turning grey. Soft tone, intact colour. Fujifilm also positions Astia as the mixed-light simulation (dappled sun, mixed colour temperature), making this recipe more forgiving outdoors than its delicacy suggests. Note the flip side: Astia's shadows are soft too, so any real depth in this recipe has to come from DR/Shadow, never from the simulation.

Pro note. This is the most tone-stacked recipe in the bank (2026-07-20): Astia is officially soft at both ends of the curve, and this recipe adds Highlight −2 / Shadow −2 on top. That is the pastel look working exactly as intended, but it leaves no reserve. In already-flat light (overcast, deep shade) it will read mushy, because there is nothing left to give. Fix in that situation: raise Shadow toward 0 and let DR carry the highlights, rather than reaching for Clarity. See the notes.

ISO 500 is the sweet spot, not a compromise (measured 2026-07-27). DR400 pins the ISO floor at 500, and that is exactly where the X-T5's conversion-gain step sits, so it is the cleanest ISO in that region, not a tax you pay for using DR400. ISO 640 is the expensive next click: roughly 0.35 EV of dynamic range for one third-stop, against about 0.02 EV for the step from 400 to 500. In good light, hold ISO at 500 and control exposure with aperture and shutter. Measured from published read-noise and PDR data, see Dynamic Range & Tone Curve, the contrast controls.

The design brief, and the one thing people get wrong about pastels

A pastel is not a desaturated colour. That is the mistake almost every attempt at this look makes, and it produces something washed-out and sad rather than sweet.

A pastel is a light tint of a saturated colour, the hue is fully present, it simply sits high on the tonal scale with the darkness taken out of it. Baby pink is not "less red". It is red with a great deal of white mixed in. The hue survives. The value changes.

That translates into a specific and slightly counterintuitive digital recipe:

Keep the colour up (+2). Lift and flatten the tone around it.

Which is exactly what this recipe does: Color +2, with Highlight −2 / Shadow −2 / DR400 and a bright +2/3 to +1⅓ exposure. The saturation is held while the tonal range it lives in is compressed and shifted upward, and the result reads as sugared tint rather than faded colour.

Why Astia: and why the base choice is load-bearing here

Fujifilm's official specification for Astia: "the transition from highlights to shadows is smooth, while saturation is maintained."

That second clause is the entire reason this recipe works. The pastel formula requires flattening the tone curve aggressively, and on most simulations, flattening tone takes colour with it. Astia is the one soft profile explicitly engineered to keep saturation intact through a soft transition. Soft tone, intact colour is precisely the pastel requirement, and Astia is the only base in the camera that delivers both without a fight.

Fujifilm also positions Astia as the mixed-light simulation. Designed for dappled sun and mixed colour temperature. That makes this recipe considerably more forgiving outdoors than its delicacy suggests, which is worth knowing before assuming it needs a controlled setup.

The flip side, stated in the recipe and worth repeating: Astia's shadows are soft too. So any real depth in this recipe has to come from DR and the Shadow control, never from the simulation. There is no reserve of contrast waiting in the base.

Bases considered:

Base Verdict
Astia Chosen. Soft transition with saturation maintained, the exact pastel requirement.
Velvia Offered as the "Fruit Pastel" variant. Very high saturation under a flattened curve gives louder, sweeter, more candy-like pastels. Riskier on skin, because Velvia's uniform saturation gain does not discriminate between a pink balloon and a red face.
Provia Neutral and normal-contrast. The flattening leaves it bland rather than sweet.
Classic Chrome Lowest saturation of any base, the opposite of what a pastel needs.
Eterna Deliberately suppresses saturation ("an art of omission"). That is Matte Editorial, and the contrast between these two recipes makes the point exactly.

The white balance is doing something subtle

WB −1 Red / −2 Blue looks odd until you decompose it:

  • −2 Blue removes blue, which adds yellow. Warmth. This creates the milky, creamy base tone that pastels sit on.
  • −1 Red pulls back on red, which stops the warmth from becoming orange.

Together they produce a faint warm-cream cast rather than a golden one. That distinction matters: pastels live on a cream ground (think old ice-cream parlour, painted plaster, sun-bleached fabric), not a golden one. A golden ground turns pastels into Golden Hour Glow territory, which is a warmer and more nostalgic register.

This is one of the few WB shifts in the bank where both axes are negative, and it is worth understanding as a technique: −R/−B is how you get warmth-without-orange, and the inverse (+R/+B) is how you get coolness-without-cyan.

Chrome effects Off: a deliberate double-negative

Color Chrome Effect Off and Color Chrome FX Blue Off, and this is the correct call for a specific reason.

Color Chrome Effect adds density inside already-saturated colour. It deepens and enriches, giving highly saturated areas more tonal structure and weight. That is genuinely valuable on almost every other colour recipe in this bank. Here it is exactly wrong: depth and richness are the opposite of pastel. A pastel is defined by its lightness. Adding density is un-making it.

Same argument for CCFXB on blues. A pastel sky is pale and airy. Adding blue tonal range gives it body it should not have.

This makes Pastel Dream one of the very few colour recipes in the bank with both Chrome effects fully off, an useful signal that the look is defined by what is removed as much as what is added.

The structural warning

This is the most tone-stacked recipe in the bank. Astia is officially soft at both ends of the curve, and the recipe adds Highlight −2 / Shadow −2 on top of that. Nothing is held in reserve.

In already-flat light. Heavy overcast, deep shade, an unlit room, the frame will read mushy, because the base and the settings have both already spent everything they have. (Logged in the notes.)

The fix: raise Shadow toward 0 and let DR400 carry the highlights. Do not reach for Clarity. Clarity restores mid-tone contrast, which is texture, and this look is built on Clarity −2. You would fix the flatness by destroying the softness.

Same failure mode and same fix as Matte Editorial, which is not a coincidence: they share a tone curve.

Pastel Dream and Matte Editorial have the identical tone curve and opposite colour, and that pair is the single clearest teaching example in this bank: tone sets the mood, colour sets the personality, and the two are independent. Learn that from these two recipes and every other look in the folder becomes easier to reason about.

Validation status

Creative design. Aesthetic reference is the evidence tier.

Test priority:

  1. A frame with a genuinely saturated object, a red door, a bright blue chair. The recipe's core claim is that Color +2 under a flattened curve reads as tint rather than as washed-out saturation. If the object still reads fully saturated rather than sugared, the exposure is not bright enough: push EC before touching Color.
  2. Skin at +1 EC. Pastel looks are unkind to complexions if the warmth tips orange. Watch specifically for the −1R doing its job.
  3. A frame in flat overcast, per the structural warning. This is where the recipe is known to fail, and confirming the failure mode is as useful as confirming the success.
  4. The "Fruit Pastel" Velvia variant on the same scene, since it changes the character substantially and skin is the thing most likely to suffer.
