The look

Cool, desaturated, contained. Trade commentary describes the current mood palette as "subtle desaturation for tension" This is that, built as a camera recipe rather than a post filter. Colour is pulled back, blues are held, and the shadows close rather than lift.

The name is the television term for the scene before the titles: the uneasy bit, before you know what is happening.

Why Eterna

Eterna is Fujifilm's cinema base. Low contrast, muted colour, and a documented cyan lean. Most recipes in this bank treat that cyan as something to correct with a red shift. Here it is the point. The base arrives already halfway to the look, so the settings can stay modest and the result does not read as a heavy filter.

Shadow —is the entire idea

Almost every desaturated look in this bank opens the shadows, Matte Editorial lifts them to −2, Pastel Dream similar. Cold Open closes them by a full step against Eterna's naturally soft curve.

Tension is containment, not lift. A desaturated frame with lifted blacks reads as calm, expensive, editorial. The same desaturation with the bottom held shut reads as unease. It is one setting, and it is the difference between two entirely different emotions.

Change Shadow from —to —and this recipe becomes Matte Editorial. That is not a criticism of either. It is the clearest illustration in the bank of how much a single tone-curve value carries.

Colour that refuses to be attractive

Color —with Color Chrome Effect —. Desaturating alone leaves colour that is merely weaker; Color Chrome would restore depth to whatever saturated colour survives. Turning it off denies that recovery, so the remaining colour stays flat and slightly lifeless, which is the effect being aimed at.

WB —/—. Cool, but only two notches. Beyond that it stops reading as mood and starts reading as a white-balance error.

Why it is clean rather than soft

—, —. Most moody looks reach for negative Clarity. This one does not: the intent is clinical, not dreamy, and softening the mid-tones would make it sentimental. A useful side effect is that this is one of the bank's fully HEIF-safe and fastest-saving recipes.

Honest limits

• Original design, not an emulation: the "Original design" tier, validated by whether it works, not by scans.
• The failure mode is corpse-grey skin. Cool plus desaturated is unkind to faces. Lift WB Red to —efore touching Color; skin needs a little warmth even here.
• Genuinely bad in golden light. Warm sun fights every choice. That is a deliberate scope, not a defect. Use Clay Season instead.
• ⚠Shadow noise is the thing to watch. Shadow —deepens a region — lifted from a 2-stop-underexposed capture. Inspect at 100 %; in very dark scenes prefer — + Highlight —over raising High ISO NR, which would remove the noise texture the look tolerates well. See dynamic-range-and-tone.
• The video version is unusually faithful: CCE and Clarity were already —/0, so movie mode loses almost nothing.
