Part 0: the source, first-hand
Read from the CARI entry on 2026-08-11 via curl, since a direct fetch reports the domain as blocked.

Five words in that list are a photographic brief and the rest is graphic design: glossy, glassy, transparent, bokeh, macro. Add the aurora and the implied blue sky and the subject matter is settled. It is nature photographed the way a software company wanted nature to look.
The 2026 trade commentary is consistent about why it is back. After a decade of flat minimalism, and after Corporate Memphis consolidated that flatness from 2017, designers are described as reaching for warmth, tactility and dimension, with the revival read as a reaction against sterile design and algorithmic coldness. Digital nostalgia aimed at audiences who were children during the original run does the rest.
Worth noting where this sits relative to the bank's other 2026 build. Flash Memory is the same nostalgic decade seen from the opposite side: one is the era's cheap reality, the other is the era's marketing. They were made within a few years of each other and they could not look less alike.
Part 1: the aesthetic and the simulation share a thesis
The base decision here is unusually easy and unusually satisfying, because Fujifilm and CARI are describing the same idea from two directions.
Fujifilm's concept for Velvia is Memorized Colour: "the colour of how photographers remember the scene, also the colour of how the viewers expect to see upon looking at the photographs". Their reasoning is stated bluntly in the development story: "if the colour is truly a reflection of reality, then people would often find that 'the photo is missing something'." Velvia is an argument that the remembered version of a scene is the honest one.
Frutiger Aero makes the same argument at the scale of a decade. Its grass is greener than grass. Its skies never happened. Its water beads instead of smearing. The aesthetic's whole proposition is that the idealised version is the one worth showing, which is why it attached itself to operating systems and utility companies rather than to art.
Fujifilm's own use case for Velvia closes the loop: "ideally suited to landscapes and nature", aimed at "expansive skies, deep oceans, vivid greenery, or autumn leaves". Remove the autumn leaves and that is the CARI motif list.
Part 2: the requirements, ranked by what ruins a frame
- Saturated green and blue that stay separated. The palette is narrow and intense. If the greens block up into one shape the macro-grass motif dies, and that is the aesthetic's most recognisable image.
- Gloss, which is a tonal property rather than a colour one. A glossy surface is a bright specular sitting next to a dark reflection on the same object. Both halves are required. Lose the specular and it reads matte. Lose the dark side and it reads flat.
- Bright and optimistic without going pale. High key, but saturated. Most high-key rendering costs colour, and this look cannot pay.
- Smooth bokeh. The out-of-focus circle is a named motif, and it has to stay creamy.
- A blue that leans cyan, not magenta. This is the specific requirement that most bases fail, including the one chosen.
Requirements 2 and 3 are the pair that decides the base, and they pull against each other. Gloss wants a hard top end so the specular stays distinct. Bright-and-optimistic usually wants a soft one so nothing clips.
Part 3: the base, and why the high-key base lost

Astia is the interesting rejection
This bank's own note is that Astia is "the correct base for high-key work, and now provably so: soft highlights with saturation retained is exactly what a bright, white-forward look needs". Requirement 3 is that sentence. Two of the bank's existing bright looks, Pastel Dream and Clean Girl, sit there for exactly that reason.
It fails requirement 2, and requirement 2 is what makes this aesthetic itself rather than merely cheerful. Gloss is a highlight phenomenon: the specular has to stay a distinct bright point with an edge, and a soft shoulder rolls it into the surface it is sitting on. Astia's soft shadow end compounds it, because the dark half of a reflective surface goes grey and the object stops reading as glossy at all.
Velvia's hard-at-both-ends tonality supplies both halves at once. The specular stays a point, the reflection stays dark, and the object reads wet.
Provia would have worked, and did not go far enough
Provia is also a memory-colour base with documented sky and foliage boosts, and a Provia build of this look would be perfectly reasonable. It loses on amplitude. Frutiger Aero is not a restrained aesthetic, and Velvia is the only simulation Fujifilm makes that pushes as far as the reference material does.
There is a second reason worth recording: Provia is already carrying Flash Memory, the other 2026 build, and two recipes from the same trend cycle on the same base would blur two looks that are meant to be opposites.
Part 4: the one correction the base needs
Velvia's documented flaw for this purpose is specific and first-party. Fujifilm states that "a bit of magenta is being added" to blue to make skies "more memorable" and produce "the most comfortable and eye-pleasing blue".
That is a warm blue, and it is the correct choice for landscape photography. It is the wrong choice here, and it fails requirement 5. Frutiger Aero's blue is a rendered blue: clean, cyan-leaning, the colour of a glass button and a default wallpaper. Magenta in it reads as a photograph of a nice afternoon rather than as a screen.
White Balance … and … is the fix, and it earns three things at once:
- The sky moves off magenta toward cyan.
- The greens shift slightly yellow-green, which is where rendered grass sits.
- Water and glass pick up the aqua cast that carries most of the aesthetic's tertiary palette.
It stops at one notch on each axis because two takes the greens genuinely cold, and a cold green reads as winter rather than as a boot screen.
Note the shape of this argument, because it recurs in this bank. A base is chosen for what it was designed to do, and then one documented property of that base is corrected because the subject differs from the design target. Austurbane does the same thing in the opposite direction, warming Classic Chrome's documented cool shadows.
Part 5: gradation is the gloss
Color Chrome Effect … is the setting that separates this from a plain saturated landscape recipe, and the macro-grass motif is the clearest case.
The control detects gradation in already-saturated colours and gives them tonal separation, so they read three-dimensional instead of as a flat block. A frame filled edge to edge with Velvia-saturated green is the textbook failure case for saturation without gradation: it becomes one green shape and the individual blades disappear. Strong keeps them. The same mechanism is what makes a water bead convincing, because a bead only reads as a bead if the colour inside it has depth.
… on the most saturated base in the lineup, and that is deliberate. Fujifilm describes Velvia's lift as global, maintaining "colour balance so that no colour is emphasised more than another", which means the saturation arrives evenly across the palette rather than picking favourites. That is what a tertiary palette needs. Adding to it produces neon, and neon belongs to a different revival.
Color Chrome FX Blue sits at … rather than … for a sensor-specific reason. X-Trans V already renders blue more deeply than X-Trans IV on several simulations, so Off here is roughly the X-Trans IV Weak position and Weak is roughly its Strong. This aesthetic's blue is bright rather than deep, so Weak lands where the look wants it and Strong would push an optimistic sky toward a dramatic one.
Part 6: the two zeroes
…, on a look that is full of texture. Clarity raises local contrast, and bokeh is smooth by definition. A named motif of this aesthetic is the out-of-focus highlight circle, and a local-contrast operator puts structure into precisely the areas that are supposed to have none. The macro variant raises it, because a frame filled with grass has no out-of-focus transition left to spoil. Holding it at 0 also keeps the recipe HEIF-safe and shot-to-shot saving fast.
Grain …. This is glossy commercial imagery from the era in which marketing discovered high-resolution rendering. There is no film in the aesthetic at any point, and grain laid over a clean sky gradient reads as noise rather than as character. It is the same reasoning as Austurbane and it lands the same way: an aesthetic with no film in it should carry no film signature.
Part 7: where it sits in the bank

Two recipes on the same base going opposite directions is the useful comparison, and it is item 5 on the test list for that reason. It also makes the point that a base is a starting position rather than a look.
Against the bank's other 2026 build, Flash Memory, the pairing is chronological rather than technical. Both are nostalgia for roughly the same years. One reproduces what the cameras of that era actually produced, and the other reproduces what the era's advertising promised. Sold together they are a decade seen from both ends.
Part 8: honest limits
- No frames. Creative-design tier and nothing more.
- The cyan correction is the untested claim. Requirement 5 is the recipe's specific promise and the midday-sky frame is the only thing that can confirm one notch of Red reduction is enough to overcome a documented magenta lift. If it is not, … is the next step and the recipe still stands.
- Not for people. Velvia at full strength is hard on skin and the cool shift makes it harder. The variant softens it and does not solve it, and the recipe files say so in both places.
- Gloss is partly a lighting problem. A specular next to a dark reflection needs a light source with some direction to it, and no tone curve produces gloss on a subject lit flatly. The recipe can preserve gloss and cannot create it.
- The aesthetic is mostly graphic design. Five words in the CARI entry are photographic and the rest describe interfaces, typefaces and illustration. A recipe can only serve the photographic fraction, and anyone expecting the whole aesthetic from a camera will be disappointed by the parts that were never photographs.
- No measurement underneath the tonality claims. Hard and soft here are Fujifilm's own descriptions rather than numbers, since no characteristic curve exists for a simulation.

Built and measured on the X-T5. The X100VI, X-H2 and X-T50 carry the same 40.2 MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, so this is not adapted for them — it is the same recipe. On an X-Trans IV body it needs one documented change.
