Pink Chrome

Pink Chrome is a Fujifilm film simulation recipe for X-Trans V cameras. Every setting is published below in full, then how it was derived and why each control sits where it does.

The recipe

An original design for the mid-2000s aspirational-luxury register: hot pink over gold over deep black, spray-tanned skin, bedazzled surfaces, gloss on everything and no green anywhere. Derivation in the notes.

Aesthetic reference: McBling, catalogued by the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute, named by Froyo Tam. CARI places it from the early to the late 2000s and describes a hard shift away from the minimalist futurism of Y2K toward "maximalist remixes of mainly 1970s and early 1980s trends and motifs": aspirational luxury in all forms, celebutantes, bedazzled electronics, fashion phones, spray tans, tattoo motifs, oversized designer glasses, reality television, and what they call "nihilistic and hedonistic overtones".

The recipe is not named for the aesthetic. McBling is a portmanteau built on a trademark, so this bank credits the influence in prose with a link and keeps the recipe name to what the camera does. Same rule that governs Reading Room and BewareMyVelvia.

Provenance. Built 2026-09-17 against CARI's entry and its Are.na channel, read first-hand. The channel holds 19 blocks, 15 of them images. Nine are celebrity and pop portraiture, three are nightclub interiors, and the rest are logos, a product shot and a web page.


What the corpus measures

A black point of 7.6 under a white point of 91.9 is a range of 84 L* units carrying a mean chroma of 22.5. Hard at both ends and saturated at the same time, which narrows the base to one.

The palette has a hole in it, and that is the finding

Pink and magenta together account for 27.5% of all coloured pixels. Measured the same way, the coffeehouse interiors of Global Village Coffeehouse come in at 4.1%, so this is a factor of nearly seven rather than an impression.

Green measures 0.0% and cyan-blue 0.1%. The entire cool half of the colour wheel is absent, and the warm half plus magenta carries the whole aesthetic. That single fact settles three settings below.

Why Velvia

  • Hard at both ends. This bank's Dynamic Range & Tone Curve, the contrast controls tone-curve table records Velvia as hard at both ends with deep shadows and a bold impression, and notes that Highlight and Shadow at 0 is already a high-contrast recipe. A measured 7.6 under 91.9 is that curve.
  • The saturation is native. Mean chroma of 22.5 is high, and Velvia is the only base that reaches it without the Color control being pushed into territory where skin goes orange.
  • The magenta is a design property. Fujifilm states that on Velvia "a bit of magenta is being added" to blue. A base that leans magenta is the right host for a palette that is 27.5% magenta and pink.
Base Why it lost
Classic Chrome Fujifilm's own comparison is "suppressed magenta and cool shadows". A base engineered to remove magenta is the single worst choice for a look made of it, and the cool shadows fight a shadow that measures a* +9.67.
Classic Negative Magenta highlights sound right until you read the other half: cyan-green shadows. The corpus measures 0.0% green and 0.1% cyan-blue, so this base would introduce the one hue family the aesthetic excludes.
Provia The base of Flash Memory, which is the closest neighbour here. It carries four documented per-hue interventions including deliberately muted orange skin, which is the opposite of a spray tan, and it does not reach chroma 22.5.
Astia Soft at both ends, against a measured 7.6 and 91.9. It would give away both endpoints at once.
Reala Ace Nonlinear compression means the more saturated the subject, the more muted the rendering. Precisely backwards for a maximalist look.
Pro Neg. Std and Hi Restrained portrait bases built to flatter skin honestly. This aesthetic is not interested in honest.
Eterna Cyan-shifted blues and a flat curve. Wrong cast and wrong contrast.

The three settings the missing half of the colour wheel decides

  • Color Chrome FX Blue Off. There is no blue to deepen. At 0.1% cyan-blue and 1.1% blue-violet, the control has nothing to act on, and the small amount of violet present belongs to club lighting that should stay electric rather than being pulled toward navy.
  • Color Chrome Effect Strong. It gives tonal separation to colours that are already saturated rather than raising saturation. On this subject that means the magenta, the gold and the tan get gradation instead of going flat and poster-like, which is the failure mode of a saturated base on a saturated subject.
  • Color 0, which looks like an omission on a maximalist look and is not. Velvia at 0 is already past where most bases sit at +4. Pushing it further takes pink to electric and tan to orange, and the measurement says chroma 22.5, which is high rather than extreme. If the frames come back short, the first move is Color +1, not a different base.

DR100, which is unusual here

Most recipes in this bank run DR200 or DR400. This one runs DR100 for a measured reason: the black point is 7.6, and Dynamic Range modes work by underexposing and then lifting everything below the highlights. Any DR mode would lift exactly the part of the tone scale this look depends on being empty.

The cost is highlight headroom, and it is covered by Highlight −1 rather than by DR. Velvia's highlight end is hard enough to clip a lit cheekbone or a chrome surface at 0, and one notch back lands near the measured 91.9 while keeping the blacks where DR would have raised them. The bonus is that DR100 is the only setting that leaves base ISO 125 available, which suits a clean, grain-free look shot under controlled light.

The rest

  • Sharpness +2 with Clarity −1, which is the era's retouching in two controls. Mid-2000s celebrity and album imagery smoothed skin heavily while keeping jewellery, sequins and hair crisp. Clarity is a local-contrast operator, so a negative value softens the broad tonal transitions across a face, and Sharpness works at the detail scale where the bedazzling lives. The pair does what an airbrush and a sharpening pass did then.
  • Grain Off. The reference material is retouched commercial print, the subject is gloss, and large smooth areas of skin and paper backdrop are the worst surface for grain to sit on. This is the third Grain Off original in the bank after Austurbane and Specimen Plate, all three for the same reason: a contemporary commercial deliverable with no emulsion behind it.
  • White Balance Daylight, +2 Red and −1 Blue. The shadows measure redder than the highlights (a* +9.67 against +4.36) while the highlights carry the yellow (b* +12.78 against +4.92), so the frame wants warmth with a red bias. Fixed rather than Auto because this is shot in sets and a spray tan should not shift between frames. The magenta itself comes from the subject and from Color Chrome Effect, not from the white balance, which is why the Blue axis moves only one notch.
  • Exposure −1/3. A black point of 7.6 is not reached by accident. Protect it, and return to 0 when the light is flat studio and there is nothing to hold down.

Variants

Situation Change
Nightclub or bar interior EC 0, Highlight −1.5, Color −1. The Vendome Mayfair blocks measure much hotter than the portraits, at highlight b* +31.9 and chroma 27.7 against a darker ground. The room supplies the saturation, so the recipe should stop supplying it too.
Direct on-camera flash Clarity 0, EC −2/3. Flash already flattens skin, so the softening is redundant and the exposure needs holding down harder. For the amateur-snapshot version of this era, use Flash Memory instead, which is a different look on a different base.
Full-length fashion on a paper sweep Sharpness +1, Highlight −1.5. Large areas of lit backdrop are where Velvia's hard highlight end shows first.
Gold, brass and bronze surfaces WB +2 Red & −2 Blue, CCE Strong held. The Tuscan-everything half of the aesthetic. More yellow, same magenta handling.
Deeper tan, more contrast Shadow +1, Color 0 held. Only when the light is genuinely flat. Velvia's shadow end is already hard and this stacks on it.
Pink product on white EC +2/3, Highlight −2. Inverts the exposure logic because the ground is now the bright thing, and the pink still has to hold chroma against it.
A cooler, more Y2K reading CCFXB Weak, WB +1 Red & 0 Blue. For the earlier end of the period, before the palette went fully warm. Accept that this stops being McBling and starts being its predecessor.

Movie mode

Movie mode drops Grain, Color Chrome Effect and Clarity. Grain is already Off, so what is genuinely lost is Color Chrome Effect Strong and the Clarity −1 skin softening, which are two of the three things doing the work. A moving version keeps Velvia, the white balance, DR100 and the tone curve, and will read harder and more poster-like on the saturated colours. Put the skin softening back with a diffusion filter rather than by lowering Sharpness, which would cost the sparkle. See Video / Movie Mode, settings, differences, and photo→video translation.


Validation tier: Creative design, field-test pending. Grounded in Fujifilm's published design statements for Velvia and for each base rejected above, in this bank's Dynamic Range & Tone Curve, the contrast controls tone-curve table and Color, Color Chrome Effect & FX Blue, the saturation/richness controls colour control notes, and in a CIELAB measurement of the entry's own photographic corpus including a hue-angle census that is what settles three of the settings.

No frames have been shot with it.

Test priority: in order

  1. A pink or magenta subject against a dark ground. The whole recipe in one frame. Does the pink hold chroma with gradation still inside it, or has it gone to a flat poster colour? Flat means Color Chrome Effect is not reaching it, which on this base usually means the subject is not saturated enough to trigger it rather than that the setting is wrong.
  2. Measure the black. The target is L* 7.6 at the 5th percentile, and it is the number DR100 exists to protect. If the frames measure much above it, check that a DR mode has not been left on before touching the tone curve.
  3. Tanned skin under warm light. The white-balance test. Skin should read warm and slightly red rather than orange. If it is orange, the Red shift comes down to +1 before Color moves, because Color would take the pink with it.
  4. Sequins, chrome or jewellery at 100 per cent. The Sharpness +2 and Clarity −1 interaction, which is the pair most likely to have overshot in opposite directions. The sparkle should be crisp while the cheek beside it stays smooth.
  5. A frame with something green in it. The honest limit test. This palette has no green in it at all, and Velvia renders greens strongly, so a plant or a lawn in shot will pull hard against the look. Worth knowing where it breaks.

What would count as the recipe being wrong rather than needing a tweak: if the pinks read orange at Color 0 even after the white balance comes back to +1 Red, then Velvia's own magenta handling is being overwhelmed by the warm shift, and the look needs the warmth taken out of the white balance entirely and put back through the subject and the lighting. That would make this a neutral-balance Velvia recipe, which is a different design.

Pro tip: The colour wheel is half empty and that is the point. Green measures 0.0% and cyan-blue 0.1% across the whole corpus. If there is green in your frame, you are not shooting this look, and no setting will rescue it. Choose subjects and locations on the warm half plus magenta, and the recipe does the rest.

Pro tip: DR100 is doing real work here, which is rare in this bank. Every DR mode lifts the bottom of the tone scale, and the bottom of the tone scale is where this look lives. A black point of 7.6 is the deepest thing measured in this bank's reference work, and DR200 would quietly erase it while the histogram still looked plausible.

Pro tip: Sharpness up, Clarity down, and they are not fighting. They act at different scales. Clarity −1 smooths the broad transitions across a face, which is what the era's retouching did, while Sharpness +2 keeps the rhinestones and the hair. Reading them as opposites and setting both to 0 gives a flatter, duller frame than either alone.

Pro tip: Velvia at Color 0 is already loud. This is the most saturated simulation Fujifilm makes, and the instinct on a maximalist look is to add more. The measurement says chroma 22.5, which is high and not extreme, and Velvia delivers it natively. Spend the restraint here so that Color Chrome Effect Strong has somewhere to put the gradation.

The entry is a list of things rather than a description of a look, which is normal for CARI and is why the corpus has to carry the derivation. What it does establish is that this is a photographed aesthetic. Celebutantes, reality television and spray tans are things that exist because a camera was pointed at them, which already separates this entry from most of what is left in the derivation queue.

Part 1: the corpus

CARI links an Are.na channel holding 19 blocks, 15 of them images, every one titled and nearly all dated between 2001 and 2008.

Nine portraits and three usable interiors is a small sample, and it is stated rather than glossed. What makes it workable is that the nine portraits are unusually consistent: all studio or event photography of people, all retouched to the commercial standard of the period, all published as covers or posters.

The images were fetched into a scratch workspace for analysis and were not downloaded into the reference set, are not reproduced here, and are not in this collection. CARI's notice is that its collection is a source of inspiration and analysis rather than free assets, and this bank is built to be sold, which makes that binding.

The portrait figure is the one the recipe is built on, and two numbers in it do the work.

A black point of 7.6 is the deepest this bank has measured in any reference corpus. For comparison, Reading Room sits at 14.2 and Specimen Plate at 13.7, both of which read as deliberately lifted. This one is not lifted at all.

A white point of 91.9 against that black is a working range of 84 L* units, and the mean chroma across it is 22.5. Wide range and high saturation together is the combination that narrows the base, because most simulations trade one against the other.

The interiors are a different exposure of the same palette: darker, hotter and more saturated, with highlight b* at +31.9 where the portraits sit at +12.8. They inform a variant rather than the main recipe.

Part 3: the hue census, which decides more than the tone does

Every pixel above chroma 15 and between L* 12 and 95 was binned by Lab hue angle.

Two findings come out of this, and the second is the more useful one.

The magenta is real. Pink-red and magenta together are 27.5% of coloured pixels in the portraits. Run the same census over the coffeehouse interiors of Global Village Coffeehouse, measured on the same day with the same code, and the figure is 4.1%. A factor of nearly seven is not an impression about vibe, it is a property of the corpus.

The cool half of the wheel is missing. Green measures 0.0% and cyan-blue 0.1%. Not low, absent. Everything in this aesthetic sits between red-orange and magenta with yellow as the largest single family, and the palette simply stops before it reaches green.

That absence settles three settings by itself. Color Chrome FX Blue has nothing to act on and goes Off. A base whose signature includes cyan-green shadows is disqualified outright rather than merely suboptimal. And the recipe carries a honest warning that a green subject breaks the look in a way no setting will rescue, which is in the notes as the fifth test.

Part 4: the base

Three requirements come out of Parts 2 and 3.

  1. Hard at both ends. L* 7.6 under L* 91.9.
  2. High native saturation. Mean chroma 22.5, reached without pushing Color into skin-damaging territory.
  3. Magenta-tolerant at minimum, magenta-positive ideally, and free of any green or cyan signature.

Velvia satisfies all three. This bank's Dynamic Range & Tone Curve, the contrast controls tone-curve table records it as hard at both ends with deep shadows, and notes that Highlight and Shadow at 0 is already a high-contrast recipe, so negative values buy normal contrast rather than flatness. It is the most saturated simulation Fujifilm makes. And Fujifilm's own design note is that on Velvia "a bit of magenta is being added" to blue, which makes it the one base with a documented magenta lean.

The disqualification, which is the interesting one

Classic Chrome is the base this bank reaches for most often, and here it is the worst available choice rather than merely a poor one. Fujifilm's published comparison against Provia is "more subdued with suppressed magenta and cool shadows". A simulation engineered to remove magenta, applied to a palette that is 27.5% magenta and pink, is working against the subject at the level of the colour model. The cool shadows compound it against a measured shadow a* of +9.67.

Classic Negative fails for a subtler reason worth recording. Its magenta highlights sound like a match, and half of it is. The other half is cyan-green shadows, and the census says green is 0.0% and cyan-blue 0.1%. The base would introduce the one hue family the aesthetic categorically excludes, into the tonal region where the look wants warm red. A half-match on colour is not a partial win when the other half is actively wrong.

Part 5: DR100, and why a bank that runs DR400 by default does not here

Ninety-odd recipes in this bank run DR200 or DR400. This one runs DR100, and the reason is a number rather than a preference.

Dynamic Range modes buy highlight headroom by underexposing and then lifting everything below the highlights. That lift is normally cheap or actively useful: Specimen Plate welcomes it because an opened shadow side is legibility, and Reading Room welcomes it because its target black is lifted anyway at L* 14.2.

Here the target black is 7.6. The lift would land on exactly the part of the tone scale the look is made of, and it would do so invisibly, because a histogram with a raised floor still looks reasonable on the back of the camera. DR200 would quietly cost the recipe its most distinctive measured property.

The highlight headroom that DR would have bought is covered instead by Highlight −1, which is cheap on a base whose highlight end is hard enough to clip a lit cheekbone at 0. DR100 also leaves base ISO 125 available, which the Sensor Architecture. X-Trans, Bayer, and what GFX actually is sensor notes establish as the best-measuring ISO on this body, and which suits a clean grain-free look under controlled light.

Part 6: Sharpness up and Clarity down

Sharpness +2 with Clarity −1 looks contradictory and is not, because the two operate at different scales.

Clarity is a local-contrast operator working on broad tonal transitions, so a negative value softens the modelling across a cheek or a forehead. Sharpness works at the detail scale, on edges a few pixels wide. The mid-2000s commercial retouching this corpus is full of did exactly these two things at once: heavy skin smoothing with jewellery, sequins, hair and eyes left crisp or sharpened further.

Setting both to 0 because they appear to cancel gives a flatter and duller frame than either alone, and misses the era's actual signature. The X-T5 has no optical low-pass filter, so Sharpness +2 does more here than the same number on a OLPF body: see the Sensor Architecture. X-Trans, Bayer, and what GFX actually is sensor notes.

Part 7: where it sits in the bank

Third creative original on Velvia after BewareMyVelvia and Fresh Install, and the three use the base for three different properties. BewareMyVelvia wants its drama, Fresh Install wants its blue-green saturation for an impossible sky, and this one wants its magenta lean and its hard shadow end. The three share a base and almost nothing else.

Third Grain Off original after Austurbane and Specimen Plate, for the same reason in all three cases: a contemporary commercial deliverable with no emulsion ancestor, over large smooth areas where grain reads as blotch.

The neighbour to keep it away from is Flash Memory, which covers the same decade from the opposite end. That recipe reproduces what a cheap camera did to a party: direct flash, blown skin, a black background and colour that clips flat, on Provia at DR100. This one reproduces what a retoucher did to a magazine cover. Same years, opposite production values, and they share only the DR setting.

Part 8: honest limits

  • No frames have been shot with it.
  • Nine portraits is a small sample, and three interiors is smaller. The hue census is stable across the nine, but a larger corpus could move the tone figures.
  • These are reproductions of printed covers and posters, so the endpoints are the endpoints of a print rather than of a camera file. Fit for targeting the appearance of a finished page, which is what a JPEG recipe does, and unfit for any claim about a capture medium.
  • The corpus is commercial imagery of a particular period and industry. Nothing here says the look flatters any given subject, only that it is what that material measures.
  • A reference tells you what a look is and never whether a recipe reproduces it. Parts 2 and 3 characterise the corpus and say nothing about whether these settings hit it.

Built and measured on the X-T5. The X100VI, X-H2 and X-T50 carry the same 40.2 MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, so this is not adapted for them. It is the same recipe.
