Part 0: the demand signal, and why it is unusually solid

Most creative looks in this bank are designed against an aesthetic that someone catalogued or a body of work someone made. This one is designed against a measurable event.

Instagram shipped a AI Flash filter to Stories in early May 2026 and it became the platform's most-used effect of the year within weeks. Its published description is specific enough to work as a brief on its own: characteristics of late-2000s point-and-shoot digital cameras, harsh direct flash, slight overexposure on skin, a warm colour cast, subtle noise grain, and softer background detail.

That matters for two reasons.

  1. It is a dated, checkable signal rather than a taste claim. The look is current in August 2026 because a platform-scale product shipped for it three months ago and people used it.
  2. It describes a camera, and this bank programs cameras. A filter applies the look afterward to a clean file. The same look produced at capture is the more interesting object, and it is the only version that survives being shot on a real sensor with a real flash.

The wider 2026 trend commentary agrees on the direction without being this specific: raw over polished, grain and flash-on snapshots, imperfection reading as authenticity, and a cultural reaction against generated imagery. The filter is the sharp edge of that, and the sharp edge is what a recipe can aim at.

Part 1: what the look actually is, mechanically

The aesthetic is a list of technical failures that a 2007 compact could not avoid. Reproducing it means reproducing the failures, which is a different exercise from every other recipe here.

Read as a set, that table is the recipe. The design work was deciding which failures the X-T5 can actually produce and being honest about the one it cannot.

Part 2: the tone curve, run backwards

This is the first recipe in the bank whose Highlight value is positive, and it is worth stating why that is a rupture rather than a variation.

Every other look here treats the top end as something to defend. The Dynamic Range & Tone Curve — the contrast controls tone notes frame negative Highlight as "soft, protected highlights, gentle, filmic, no harsh whites", and most recipes pair it with DR200 or DR400 to buy back headroom. That is the correct instinct when the goal is a photograph that holds together.

Harsh whites are the goal here. So:

  • DR100. The baseline, described in the bank's own notes as maximum native contrast with highlights clipping earliest. Every other creative look would call that a limitation.
  • Highlight +2. Provia is only moderately contrasty, so it needs a real push to clip the way a small sensor did. On a harder base this number would be absurd. On this one it is the difference between the look and a slightly punchy snapshot.
  • Shadow +2. The flash has already darkened the background by physics, and this removes what is left. The bank's tone table calls positive Shadow "deep, rich, inky", which understates what +2 with DR100 does. There is close to nothing back there, and that is correct.

The ISO floor belongs in the same argument. This bank's standing position is that a lower ISO is always better and that DR400's ISO 500 floor is tolerable because 500 happens to be a clean point on the X-T5's conversion-gain curve. Flash Memory wants the opposite and sets its floor at 800 to guarantee noise. It is the only recipe here where a cleaner frame is a worse frame.

Part 3: Provia, and the argument against picking the neutral base

The intuitive reasoning is that a cheap camera had no colour opinion, so the recipe should start from whichever simulation is least opinionated. Fujifilm's own documentation kills that reasoning and replaces it with a better one.

The bank's note on Provia is blunt: never describe it as the neutral or unmodified base. Fujifilm states four deliberate per-hue interventions. Skies get clarity and definition, sunsets are intensified, foliage renders lusher and richer, and skin tones are "deliberately muted in orange for appealing portraits". Provia is a memory-colour rendering, engineered so that an ordinary snapshot comes back looking better than the scene did.

That is an exact description of what a consumer JPEG pipeline was for. A 2007 compact was not trying to be neutral. It was trying to make a snapshot look good to someone who would never open a raw file, and it did that by boosting the things people like and damping the things they do not.

The skin intervention is the clincher, and it is the piece that would have been missed by reasoning from first principles. Provia damps orange in skin before the Color setting applies. Under frontal flash, a face that is already low in orange saturation and now a stop overexposed reads as the pale, flat, slightly clinical face that every digicam produced. It arrives from the base for free, and no other simulation supplies it.

Why Classic Negative lost, since it is the sentimental favourite

It is genuinely close. Fujifilm designed Classic Negative around consumer negative film "including its degradation", describes the intended result as "unbalanced and lo-fi, but nonetheless comforting", and frames it around "the excitement of going to pick up your negatives". The philosophy matches this recipe's philosophy exactly: a look built from a cheap medium's failures rather than a good medium's virtues.

It loses on medium rather than on spirit. Classic Negative's signature is cyan-green in the shadows and magenta in the highlights, which is a film artefact, and its mid-tone saturation emphasis produces colour that is rich in the middle. A compact's failures were digital and lived at the ends: clipped highlights, empty shadows, flat blocks of colour. The two aesthetics both celebrate degradation and they degrade in opposite directions.

Worth recording because someone will propose it again, and because a Classic Negative version of this idea is a legitimate separate recipe rather than a wrong answer.

Part 4: removing the mechanism that would rescue the colour

Color Chrome Effect Off is the setting that most reveals what this recipe is doing.

The control detects gradation in colours that are already saturated and gives them tonal separation, so a red car or an autumn leaf reads three-dimensional rather than as a flat area of colour. The bank's Color, Color Chrome Effect & FX Blue — the saturation/richness controls own note describes the alternative in one phrase: "OFF = flatter, more 'digital' saturated colour."

Everywhere else in this bank that phrase is a caution. Here it is the specification, word for word. There is something clarifying about a recipe whose central colour decision is documented in the knowledge base as the thing to avoid.

Color +2 sharpens the effect rather than softening it. Raising saturation moves more of the frame into the range where gradation recovery would have mattered, and the recovery has been switched off, so more of the frame clips into flat shapes. The two settings are a pair and neither works alone: Color +2 with Color Chrome Effect Strong would produce a rich modern image, and Color 0 with it Off would produce a merely plain one.

Color Chrome FX Blue Off follows. Deep gradated blues are a modern rendering. A compact gave a flat cyan sky, or a black window, and nothing in between.

Part 5: the two house rules broken on purpose

Both are listed in the notes so that a future session does not helpfully correct them.

Auto white balance. This bank's position is that fixed white balance is a professional requirement, argued at length in North Light where a room shot from six angles has to cut together. That argument is about consistency across a set, and consistency is what this look does not have. A snapshot camera ran Auto, guessed at a mixture of flash and tungsten and fluorescent, and got it slightly differently wrong in each frame. The drift is a period marker. The +2 Red and −1 Blue shift then adds the warm cast that the trend's own description names, so the drift happens around a warm centre rather than a neutral one.

Sharpness +2. The standing house argument is that the X-T5 has no optical low-pass filter, resolves close to Nyquist, and therefore shows sharpening artefacts earlier than a OLPF body would. Every other recipe treats that as a reason for restraint. Here it is a shortcut: the halo that a modern recipe is trying to avoid is the halo a 2007 JPEG engine produced by default, and this sensor gives it up readily.

Clarity stays at 0, and that is not a compromise. It is a local-contrast operator with no counterpart in a 2007 pipeline, it slows shot-to-shot saving on a camera that should be shooting quickly, and holding it at 0 keeps the recipe HEIF-safe.

Part 6: the limit that cannot be engineered away

A compact at ISO 400 produced chromatic noise: coloured blotches, mostly in the shadows and in flat mid-tones, from a small noisy sensor and weak noise reduction. It is one of the strongest period markers there is.

The X-T5 cannot make it. Its noise at high ISO is fine and largely luminance-based, and neither control that touches texture converts one into the other. Grain Effect models film grain, which is a silver-halide structure with no chroma component at all. High ISO NR only decides how much of the sensor's own noise survives, and at −4 the answer is most of it, which is why the value that every other recipe uses to protect detail is used here to preserve grit.

Raising ISO is the only real lever, which is why the floor sits at 800 and the variants push it higher. The honest statement is that this recipe reproduces six of the seven artefacts in Part 1 and approximates the seventh.

It is the bank's first original on Provia, its first recipe with a positive Highlight, and its first that assumes a flash. That is three firsts in one table, and they all follow from the same decision: to reproduce a camera's failures rather than a photographer's craft.

Part 8: honest limits

  • No frames. Creative-design tier and nothing more.
  • Chromatic noise is out of reach, as set out in Part 6. This is the gap between the recipe and the real thing, and no setting closes it.
  • It fails without a flash. Three of the seven artefacts come from the light rather than from the camera, and the daylight variant exists to stop the curve crushing an ambient frame rather than to deliver the look.
  • The trend signal is dated and could age fast. May 2026 is recent, and a look that arrived through a platform filter can leave the same way. That is an argument for building it now rather than an argument against building it.
  • Highlight +2 is the number most likely to move. It was chosen to force a clip on a base that is only moderately contrasty, and the white-shirt frame in the test list is what settles whether it should be +3.
  • No video version. Movie mode drops Grain and both Chrome effects, and Color Chrome Effect Off is the recipe's central colour decision, so a video build would have to reach the same place by other means.

The recipe

The late-2000s point-and-shoot look, built on purpose: harsh direct flash, skin a stop too bright, the background gone to black, colour that clips into flat blocks, and sharpening you can see. Derivation in the notes.

Why now: the digicam look is the dominant photographic trend of 2026. Instagram shipped a AI Flash filter to Stories in early May 2026 that renders any photo as a harsh-flash late-2000s snapshot, and it became the platform's most-used effect of the year. The stated recipe of that filter is "harsh direct flash, slight overexposure on skin, warm color cast, subtle noise grain, and softer background detail". This is that, produced in camera on a real sensor instead of applied afterward.

Shoot it with the flash up. This is the first recipe in this bank that assumes a light source, and without one it is only a contrasty snapshot recipe.


It is the bank's first recipe that runs the tone curve backwards

Every other recipe here spends settings protecting the highlights. Negative Highlight values, DR200 or DR400, a base with a soft shoulder. The whole craft of this bank is keeping detail at the top end.

A 2007 compact had none of that. A small sensor with about seven stops of range and a JPEG engine tuned for punch clipped the moment the flash hit, and the clip was abrupt rather than graceful. Reproducing the look means asking for the failure on purpose.

  • Highlight +2 and DR100 together. DR100 is the baseline with no highlight headroom bought back, and a positive Highlight steepens the top end on a base that is only moderately contrasty to start with. Skin nearest the flash goes, a white shirt goes, a reflective surface goes. That is the correct outcome.
  • Shadow +2 for the fall-off. Flash obeys the inverse-square law, so a subject at two metres is lit and a wall at four metres gets a quarter of the light. The tone curve finishes what the physics starts and takes the background to black.
  • ISO floor at 800, which is the exact inversion of house practice. Every other recipe here wants the cleanest ISO available. This one wants sensor noise, because a compact at ISO 400 was noisy and the noise is part of what the eye reads as period.

Why Provia, which is not the neutral base

The obvious pick is whatever simulation is least opinionated, on the theory that a cheap camera had no opinion. Fujifilm's own documentation says that is the wrong theory, and points at a better answer.

Provia is built on memory colour, and Fujifilm names four deliberate interventions: skies get clarity and definition, sunsets are intensified, foliage renders lusher, and skin tones are "deliberately muted in orange for appealing portraits". That is not neutrality. It is a consumer-pleasing rendering engine tuned to make ordinary snapshots look good, which is precisely what a point-and-shoot JPEG pipeline was.

The skin intervention is the one that seals it. Provia damps orange in skin before any Color setting applies, so faces sit paler and less warm than the rest of the frame. Under direct flash that reads as the washed-out face every digicam produced, and it arrives from the base rather than from a setting fighting the base.

Colour that clips instead of glowing

Color Chrome Effect Off is the most deliberate setting in the table, and the bank's own note on the control explains it in one line: "OFF = flatter, more 'digital' saturated colour."

That sentence is written as a warning everywhere else in this bank. Here it is the specification. Color Chrome Effect exists to recover gradation in saturated reds, yellows and greens so they read rich and three-dimensional rather than as a flat block. A 2007 compact had no such stage. Saturated colour clipped into a flat block, and a red jacket under flash came back as a single shape of red with no shading in it.

Color +2 on top makes that happen sooner. The two settings work together: raise saturation, remove the mechanism that would have rescued it.

Color Chrome FX Blue Off for the same reason. Deep gradated blues are a modern rendering. A compact gave you a flat cyan sky or a black window.

The rest

  • Auto white balance, which breaks this bank's own rule and should. Fixed white balance exists here so a set cuts together, and that is a professional requirement rather than an universal one. A snapshot camera ran Auto, guessed, and drifted from frame to frame as the flash and the room light traded places. That drift is part of the look. The +2 Red and −1 Blue shift adds the warm cast that the trend's own description names.
  • Sharpness +2, which breaks the other house rule. This bank keeps Sharpness low because the X-T5 has no optical low-pass filter and already resolves close to Nyquist, so the artefacts arrive early. Here the artefact is the point. Compact JPEG engines over-sharpened aggressively and left visible edge halos, and at +2 on this sensor you get them.
  • Clarity 0. Clarity is a modern local-contrast operator with no 2007 counterpart, it slows shot-to-shot saving, and snapshots are taken quickly. Leaving it at 0 also keeps this recipe HEIF-safe.
  • Grain Weak and Small. Small because compact-sensor noise was fine-grained rather than coarse, and Weak because the ISO floor is doing most of the work. See the limits note below for what this cannot reproduce.
  • Exposure. Meter normally and let the flash overexpose the near subject, which is the look. Go to +1/3 when you want the fully blown version.

Test priority: in order

  1. A person at two metres, flash up, indoors at night. The whole recipe. Does the face read a stop hot with the background fully gone, and does it feel like a photo from a phone-less party rather than a badly exposed portrait?
  2. A saturated object under flash, a red jacket or a blue bag. The Color Chrome Effect Off test. It should read as one flat shape of colour with little shading. If it still has rich gradation, the base is doing more rescuing than expected and Color goes to +3.
  3. The same scene at ISO 800 and at ISO 3200. Settles where the floor belongs. The look needs visible noise, and the X-T5 is clean enough that 800 may not be enough.
  4. A white shirt or a white wall near the flash. Confirms the clip is abrupt rather than a soft roll. If it rolls off gracefully, Highlight goes to +3.
  5. Anything with a hard edge, viewed at 100 per cent. The Sharpness +2 halo check, which is the one artefact here that is wanted rather than tolerated.

What would count as the recipe being wrong rather than needing a tweak: if the frames read as a well-made high-contrast digital photograph rather than as a cheap one, the problem is that every control here is too well-behaved, and the honest fix is a smaller sensor rather than more settings.

Pro tip: This recipe fails without a flash. Every other look in this bank works with whatever light you find, and this one is a lighting recipe wearing a colour recipe's clothes. The direct frontal light, the hot near subject and the black background are three quarters of the look, and the tone curve only exaggerates what the flash already did.

Pro tip: Two house rules are broken here on purpose, and both are listed above so nobody fixes them. Auto white balance is correct because the drift is period-accurate. Sharpness +2 is correct because visible halos are period-accurate. If you are porting ideas from this recipe to any other, leave both behind.

Pro tip: Chromatic noise is the one thing this cannot reproduce. A 2007 compact produced coloured blotches in the shadows because its sensor and its noise reduction were both poor. The X-T5 produces fine luminance noise instead, and no combination of Grain Effect and High ISO NR turns one into the other. Raising ISO gets you closer than any other control, which is why the floor sits at 800.

Shoot JPEG or HEIF. This is one of the few recipes here that is HEIF-safe, because Clarity sits at 0.

Which cameras this fits

Built and measured on the X-T5. The X100VI, X-H2 and X-T50 carry the same 40.2 MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, so this is not adapted for them — it is the same recipe. On an X-Trans IV body it needs one documented change.
