AP's Portra
AP's Portra is a Fujifilm film simulation recipe for X-Trans V cameras. Every setting is published below in full, then how it was derived and why each control sits where it does.
The recipe
An original portrait recipe targeting Kodak Portra 400's rendering, tuned for Indian skin tones and shooting in Mumbai. Built on REALA ACE, not Classic Chrome, a deliberate departure from every popular Portra recipe, for reasons the datasheets make hard to argue with. Why Reala Ace and not Classic Chrome
Every well-known Portra recipe, the bank's own original, Fuji X Weekly's v2, and Reggie's Portra. Sits on Classic Chrome. For a portrait recipe aimed at Indian skin, that base has one documented flaw that matters more than all its virtues.
Where darker skin actually sits. Kodak's own Portra 400 datasheet (E-4050) publishes separate density targets by complexion:

Lighter skin sits about +0.31 above the grey-card reference. Darker skin sits about +0.16. Barely above mid-grey. Translated to a digital tone curve, darker skin lives in the lower-mid zone, and what the curve does there decides whether a face reads modelled or muddy.
What Classic Chrome does there. Fujifilm's own published tonality data: "The shadow end is hard, but the tonality is soft on the highlight end", and Classic Chrome is the second-hardest tonality of any simulation, behind only Velvia. The bank's derived rule is that it needs a Shadow lift just to reach normal shadow detail.
So the base most Portra recipes use compresses precisely the zone that renders Indian skin. It's a tax that lighter skin largely escapes, because lighter skin sits higher up the curve, above the compression.
What Reala Ace does instead. Fujifilm describes its tonality as "deep, soft shadows and hard highlights", the inverse architecture. Soft shadows mean gradation is retained where darker skin sits. deep means it still has richness rather than washed-out lift. That is exactly the combination a face in the lower-mid zone wants.
Three more Reala Ace traits that fit this brief unusually well:
- Nonlinear saturation compression: officially, "the more saturated the subject, the more muted the colour." Mumbai's screaming tarps, saris and signage get pulled back automatically, while skin (a low-saturation subject) keeps its density. It also flips what the Color dial does: +Color lifts skin more than it lifts the already-saturated background, the opposite of Classic Chrome, where a Color push lands on the accents.
- Complex-colour reproduction, "particularly purple and yellow-green": the hues that defeated traditional negative stock, and a fair description of Indian textiles.
- It is actually a negative-film simulation. Reala was a Fujicolor C-neg. Portra is a C-neg. Classic Chrome, by Fujifilm's own statement, is based on no analog film at all: it's "an imaginary film" modelling printed magazine pages. If the goal is emulating a colour negative, Reala Ace is structurally the more honest starting point.
Why each value
- Highlight −2. Reala Ace's highlights are natively hard, and Mumbai's defining problem is brutal overhead sun plus sea-haze glare. So this is correcting the base's native shape, not stacking softness onto an already-soft end (the mistake the Portra 800 v3 recipe makes on Classic Chrome). Paired with DR400, it holds bright saris, whitewash and haze without going milky.
- Shadow −1, not −2. The base's shadows are already soft, so this only needs a gentle lift to reach Portra's characteristically open, never-crushed shadows. Going to −2 would trade away the "deep" half of deep, soft, and that depth is what makes darker skin read modelled rather than flat.
- DR400. Portra's headline trait is latitude, and Mumbai's contrast range demands it. Pins ISO ≥ 500, which is intended.
- Color +2. Moderate on paper, but on this base it does something specific: the saturation compression means the lift lands hardest on low-saturation subjects, i.e. Skin. It adds skin density without amplifying the background chaos.
- CCE Weak, not Strong. This is the one that looks wrong next to other recipes. Color Chrome Effect is a gradation tool that adds density inside already-saturated colour, which is exactly what Reala Ace's compression is deliberately holding back. Setting it Strong partly undoes the reason for choosing this base. Weak keeps CCE's documented benefit for "skin in warm light" without re-amplifying Mumbai. (Go Strong for festivals, see variants.)
- WB Daylight +2R/−2B. Deliberately gentler than every other Portra recipe. The Portra recipes run −4B, −5B, even −6B. That's a heavy yellow push, and Maharashtra skin commonly carries olive undertones, which are yellow plus green: piling yellow onto olive is the direct route to sallow. Two things let this recipe use less. First, warmth is sourced from red rather than yellow, which flatters golden/almond skin. Second, those big +Red/−Blue numbers on other recipes are partly correcting Classic Chrome's documented "cool shadows": a flaw Reala Ace's faithful-colour baseline doesn't have, so the correction isn't needed. Fixed Daylight, not Auto, because skin consistency across Mumbai's sodium/haze/shade mix is the entire point of a portrait recipe.
- Grain Weak, Small. The datasheet calls Portra 400 the "world's finest grain high-speed colour negative film", with a Print Grain Index of 37 on a 4×6 from 35mm against a visibility threshold of 25. Present, but barely. This matches the emulsion. (The popular v2 recipe's Grain Strong is modelling the scan, not the film, see the audit in the notes.)
- Sharpness −1. The datasheet does claim "optimized sharpness... Distinct edges, fine detail," but negative-film edges are gentle and sharpening is unkind to skin. −1 splits the difference.
- Clarity 0. No skin-texture penalty, HEIF-safe, and fast shot-to-shot saving, which matters when you're working a street. Use −1 for deliberate portraits (see variants).
- Expose +1/3 to +2/3, metering for the face. Portra is a negative with famously generous overexposure latitude, and DR400 is holding two stops of highlight headroom. Protect the skin and let the top end look after itself.

Classic Chrome fallback
If you don't have Reala Ace, or you want the familiar Portra-recipe character, this is the same design philosophy expressed on Classic Chrome. Essentially Reggie's Portra corrected further for darker skin:

Shadow −2 rather than Reggie's −1: on a base whose shadow end is documented as hard, darker skin needs the deeper lift. CCE Strong here because Classic Chrome has no saturation compression to protect. It's the lowest-saturation simulation Fujifilm makes, so the richness has to be added back.
Validation tier: Original design. Field-test pending. Grounded in the Kodak E-4050 datasheet (complexion density targets, Print Grain Index, the "lighting cannot be controlled" design brief), Fujifilm's published tonality and colour-design data for Reala Ace and Classic Chrome, the Mumbai 11-image place study, and a recipe-vs-datasheet audit of all five existing Portra-family recipes in this bank. It has not been shot on Indian skin.
What to check first, in order. (1) Does Highlight −2 hold Mumbai midday, or does it go milky? Reala Ace's hard highlights should absorb it, but that's reasoning, not evidence, if faces look flat and grey, go to −1. (2) Is CCE Weak too restrained for you? It is the most contestable choice here. Try Strong side by side. (3) Does Shadow −1 hold facial modelling in open shade, or does it want −2?
On the honest limits of this design (2026-07-25): mapping Kodak's negative-exposure density targets onto a digital tone curve is an inference, not a Kodak claim. Clearly flagged as such in the notes. And Reala Ace is the newest simulation here, with far less published curve data than Classic Chrome. The reasoning for choosing it is strong. The settings on it are less proven than a Classic Chrome build would be. That's why the fallback exists, and why the first roll matters.
ISO 500 is the sweet spot, not a compromise (measured 2026-07-27). DR400 pins the ISO floor at 500, and that is exactly where the X-T5's conversion-gain step sits, so it is the cleanest ISO in that region, not a tax you pay for using DR400. ISO 640 is the expensive next click: roughly 0.35 EV of dynamic range for one third-stop, against about 0.02 EV for the step from 400 to 500. In good light, hold ISO at 500 and control exposure with aperture and shutter. Measured from published read-noise and PDR data, see Dynamic Range & Tone Curve, the contrast controls.
Naming note (2026-08-08): Kodak now sells this emulsion as Ektacolor Pro, not Portra. The rename happened in March 2026 as Eastman Kodak reclaimed the brand from Kodak Alaris. The film material is unchanged, so every setting below still holds. The recipe keeps the Portra name because the emulsion, the datasheet and the whole community still do. Part 1: The existing Portra recipes, audited against the datasheet
Five Portra-family recipes live in this bank. Checked against Kodak E-4050 (Portra 400, Jan 2025) and E-4040 (Portra 800):

The pattern: the popular recipes chase the scan, the originals chase the emulsion. Both are legitimate targets, but they should be named honestly. Most people's mental image of "Portra" is a lab scan with grain dialled up, not the film Kodak actually specifies.
What the datasheet says Portra is for
Worth quoting, because it reframes the whole exercise:
"KODAK PROFESSIONAL PORTRA 400 is the world's finest grain high-speed colour negative film. At true ISO 400 speed, this film delivers spectacular skin tones plus exceptional colour saturation over a wide range of lighting conditions... The ideal choice for portrait and fashion photography, as well as for nature, travel and outdoor photography, where the action is fast or the lighting cannot be controlled."
Feature list: "Optimized Emulsion Spectral Sensitivity and Image Modifier Chemistry → Beautiful, natural skin tones and superb colour reproduction." It also incorporates Kodak VISION (cinema) film technology, the same lineage as the Vision3 stocks behind this bank's cinema recipes.
"Spectacular skin tones" + "lighting cannot be controlled" is a fair description of the brief: portraits, on a Mumbai street, in light nobody chose.
Part 2: Why Reggie's Portra is the most popular recipe in the world
Reggie Ballesteros' recipe has sat at or near #1 on Fuji X Weekly for years. Reading it against Fujifilm's published curve data, the reason is clear, and it is not fidelity. It isn't really a Portra emulation at all. It's the most forgiving recipe anyone has published.

The through-line: every single choice removes a constraint. Auto WB removes the light constraint. DR-Auto removes the ISO constraint. Clarity 0 removes the speed and format constraint. No fixed EC removes the technique constraint. Shadow −1 removes the base's shadow flaw.
That is why it wins on popularity. Versatility beats fidelity for daily use, and Reggie's is the most versatile recipe published. It's less a Portra emulation than an extremely well-judged all-round portrait look wearing the Portra name.
The finding that matters for this recipe: Reggie's Shadow −1 happens to be the exact correction darker skin needs on Classic Chrome. Whether that was intentional or intuitive, it's a large part of why the recipe reads well across a far wider range of skin tones than most. AP's Portra takes that insight further, and then questions the base itself.
Part 3: Where Indian skin actually sits, and why the base is the problem

Darker skin renders at roughly half the separation from mid-grey that lighter skin does. On a digital tone curve, that puts it in the lower-mid zone, and whatever the curve does there is what decides between "modelled" and "muddy."
An aside worth noting: Portra's tolerances are 3-4× tighter than UltraMax's

Same manufacturer, same measurement, radically different tolerance. Portra is precise about skin. UltraMax is forgiving about it. That is the professional-versus-consumer distinction expressed as actual numbers, and it's a genuinely useful thing to know when choosing which film's behaviour to emulate: Portra rewards getting exposure right. UltraMax forgives getting it wrong.
The base collision

Every popular Portra recipe uses the one base with a documented hard shadow end. For lighter skin sitting at +0.31 above grey, that hardness mostly falls below the face and reads as pleasing contrast. For darker skin at +0.16, the face is in it. It is a tax that lighter skin largely escapes.
Part 4: Why Reala Ace, and the honest risk
Availability, verified: Reala Ace arrived on the X-T5 with firmware 4.00, June 2024. (this collection's X-Trans V & Recipe Conversion Notes conversion notes previously hedged with "on some bodies/firmware", corrected as part of this work.)
Fujifilm's design statements for Reala Ace, and why each one fits this brief:
- "Deep, soft shadows and hard highlights", the inverse of Classic Chrome. Soft shadows mean gradation where darker skin lives. deep means it keeps richness instead of washing to grey. This is the primary reason for the switch.
- "The more saturated the subject, the more muted the colour". Nonlinear saturation compression. Mumbai's tarps, saris and signage get tamed automatically while skin, a low-saturation subject, keeps density. It also inverts what the Color dial does: +Color lifts skin more than the already-saturated background, where on Classic Chrome a Color push lands on the accents. For a portrait-in-a-loud-city, that's exactly the right way round.
- "Complex-colour reproduction, particularly purple and yellow-green", the hues that defeated traditional negative stock, and a fair inventory of Indian textiles.
- It is genuinely a negative-film simulation. Reala was a Fujicolor C-neg. Portra is a C-neg. Classic Chrome is based on no analog film at all. Fujifilm calls it "an imaginary film" modelling printed magazine pages. For emulating a negative, Reala Ace is the structurally honest base.
The risk, stated plainly
Reala Ace is the newest simulation in the lineup and has far less published curve data than Classic Chrome, which has multiple X Stories articles dissecting its tonality. The reasoning for choosing it is strong. The specific settings are less proven than a Classic Chrome build would be, simply because fewer people have spent years tuning on it. The repo's own note is also worth heeding: "Reala Ace is a poor base for deliberately vivid looks", which is fine here, because this is a portrait recipe where restraint is the point, but it would be wrong for a street-colour recipe.
That is why the notes ships a Classic Chrome fallback alongside the primary. Not hedging, the fallback is a genuinely good recipe (it's Reggie's logic pushed one step further for darker skin, at Shadow −2). But the Reala Ace build is the one worth testing first.

Two recipes, opposite mechanisms, same city. Shoot UltraMax when Mumbai is the subject and Portra when someone in it is.
Part 5: "Is Portra even right?", and what the greats actually shot
The brief invited disagreement, so, honestly:
Portra is a good target and the datasheet backs it. "Spectacular skin tones," "beautiful, natural skin tones," and explicitly designed for "where the lighting cannot be controlled." Wide latitude, fine grain, warm-neutral skin. There is no better-specified portrait negative. The problem was never Portra. It was the base everyone emulates it on.
But if the question is what the greats used for India in colour, the answer isn't Portra. It's Kodachrome.
- Raghubir Singh, who effectively invented Indian colour photography and made Bombay/Mumbai one of his central subjects, shot Kodachrome: at a time when serious photography was assumed to be black and white.
- Steve McCurry's India and South Asia work, including the most famous colour portrait of the 20th century, is Kodachrome 64.
That is a genuinely different aesthetic: high saturation, deep reds, strong contrast, archival dyes. It is the look of Indian colour photography as the world knows it. This bank already holds Kodachrome 64 and Kodachrome 25 as reference recipes.
Two honest caveats before chasing it:
- Kodachrome is contrasty and saturated, the opposite of a gentle portrait film. It made McCurry's portraits iconic through drama, not flattery.
- The bank's existing Kodachrome 64 recipe runs Clarity +3 and Shadow +0.5, both actively wrong for darker skin by everything established above. A Kodachrome tuned for Indian skin would need the same treatment this recipe just gave Portra, and it is the obvious next build. (Noted as a follow-up.)
The verdict: Portra for people, Kodachrome for the picture of India. They're different jobs. This recipe does the first one. The second is worth building next.
Validation status
Original design, field-test pending. Grounded in:

Not yet shot on Indian skin, which is the entire premise, the gap that matters. Highest-value test frames, in order: (1) face in harsh midday sun, (2) face in open shade, (3) face under sodium-vapour night light, (4) the same face on both the Reala Ace and Classic Chrome builds, back to back.
The explicitly labelled inference: mapping Kodak's negative-exposure density targets onto a digital tone curve is my reasoning from the data, not a Kodak claim. The direction is unambiguous. Darker skin sits lower on the curve, but the magnitude of the correction is what test frames need to settle.

Built and measured on the X-T5. The X100VI, X-H2 and X-T50 carry the same 40.2 MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, so this is not adapted for them. It is the same recipe.
