Every setting, in full and free. Then how it was derived, and why each control does what it does.
The recipe
An original design for the encyclopedia photograph: one object on a pale sweep under even light, lit for identification rather than for mood, with colour that reads true and an edge clean enough to cut out. Derivation in the notes.
Aesthetic reference: Utopian Scholastic, catalogued by the Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute, named by Karl Kraft and Michael Huldt, also filed as Encartacore. CARI places it from the late 1980s to the late 1990s and describes it as the kids' version of Frasurbane, built on "idealized, high-resolution photography" and on "stock photography collage depicting the most basic and identifiable depictions of forms and concepts for quick comprehension". They tie its existence to two industry facts of the era: the proliferation of stock photography collections, and the arrival of desktop publishing and graphics-editing software in the 1980s.
That second half is the whole photographic brief. The picture was made to be cut out and placed on a page next to a serif caption, so its job is to survive the scissors.

Provenance. Built 2026-09-10 against CARI's entry and its Are.na channel, read first-hand. The channel holds 61 blocks, 58 of them images and all titled. Most of that corpus is illustration rather than photography, which bounds what this recipe can claim: see the note below.
What the corpus measures, and what it cannot
The majority of this aesthetic is drawn, painted or rendered. Cutaway diagrams, Victorian-style natural-history plates, painted covers and early CGI account for more of the channel than photography does. A camera recipe cannot reach any of that, and pretending otherwise would be the easy mistake here.
What it can reach is the photographic register the aesthetic uses for its objects: the product and catalogue still life, twenty-three blocks of it, led by a large cluster of Nature Company catalogues. Measured in CIELAB, that cluster is specific.

The ground result survives three estimators (mean of the brightest 15 per cent, median of the brightest 25 per cent, and a fixed absolute band above L* 85), landing between b* +4.3 and +5.0 every time, and positive in 14 of 14 images under all three.
One correction had to be made before any of that was trustworthy. Nine of the twenty-three blocks turned out to have been composited onto pure white by the original designer, so their "ground" is the value 255 rather than a photographed surface. Including them dragged the measured ground toward a neutrality that was an artefact of desktop publishing. Every number above excludes them.
And one honest limit. These are scans of printed catalogues, so a cream ground can be cream paper as easily as warm light. The measurement cannot separate the two. That is why the white-balance shift below is a single notch rather than the offset instruction that a genuinely warm look would earn.
Why Pro Neg. Std
Fujifilm's own description is the argument: "optimized for use in situations with good lighting and moderate contrast, such as studio photography", with parameters that apply straightforwardly. That is a white sweep, controlled strobes and a photographer who is not fighting anything.
Three requirements come out of the measurement, and this base meets them without help.
- Neutral rendering. A ground at a* +0.63 has no cast in it, and the aesthetic's stated purpose is quick comprehension. Any base with a hue story of its own would tint the sweep and shift the object away from what it actually is.
- A ground that reaches L* 91 and stops. Moderate contrast puts the sweep high without the hard highlight end that would take it to paper and eat the object's edge along with it.
- Predictability. This is the base Fujifilm points at as the one where each adjustment does what it says, which matters more than usual in a recipe whose whole output is a cut-out that has to match the next cut-out.

Color +2, and why it does not touch the ground
This is the one setting that looks wrong on a low-saturation base and is not.
The objects measure a midtone chroma of 22.0 while the frame as a whole measures 9.2, because most of the frame is empty sweep. Pro Neg. Std is a portrait base with restrained saturation, so at Color 0 a mineral, an autumn leaf or a printed box lands short of the reference.
Color is a saturation scaling, and a neutral has no saturation to scale. The ground measures a* +0.63 with a chroma of about 5, so it moves almost nowhere, while an object at chroma 22 gains real colour. The control separates the two by itself, and this is the rare recipe where a positive Color is free. A look with a warm ground could not do this without deepening the ground along with the subject.
Clarity 0, and why Austurbane could afford what this cannot
Austurbane runs Clarity +2 on a comparable tabletop subject, and the reasoning there was that a tabletop of granite and linen has dense small-scale texture and no long hard edges to fringe.
This subject is the opposite case. An object on a bright sweep is nothing but a long hard edge against a large flat field, which is where a local-contrast operator produces a visible halo. On a picture whose purpose is to be cut out, a halo is not a stylistic quibble but a defect in the deliverable. Clarity stays at 0, and the pleasant side effect is that this is one of the few looks here that survives HEIF intact.
The rest
- Grain Off. The aesthetic's own words are "idealized, high-resolution photography", the subject is a large flat pale field where grain has nothing to sit in, and the output is a reproduction on a printed page. This is the second Grain Off original in the bank after Austurbane, for the same three reasons.
- Sharpness +2. Edge definition is the deliverable. The X-T5 has no optical low-pass filter, so a given value does more here than on a OLPF body: see the Sensor Architecture. X-Trans, Bayer, and what GFX actually is sensor notes. With Clarity at 0 there is no local-contrast operator stacked on top, which is what makes +2 safe rather than crunchy.
- DR200. Controlled studio light with no window fight, so one stop of highlight insurance covers a specular on glass or chrome and the second stop would be paid for in shadow depth for nothing. The lift that DR modes apply below the highlights is a benefit rather than a cost here, because it opens the object's shaded side, which is legibility. The floor lands at ISO 250.
- Highlight −1, Shadow 0. The sweep needs to sit at L* 91 with gradation still in it, which is what the single notch of highlight softening buys. Shadow stays at 0 because the clean product shots measure a black point near L* 16, so there is genuine darkness in this look and lifting it further would leave the object floating greyly on its own ground.
- White Balance fixed, 0 Red and −1 Blue. Fixed rather than Auto because a frame that is mostly white sweep gives Auto almost nothing to work from except the object, so the balance would chase the subject and a set of cut-outs would not match. The one notch away from Blue supplies the faint yellow the ground measures, with Red left at 0 because the ground carries no red. Set it to 0 and 0 if you conclude the cream in the references is the paper stock, which is a defensible reading.
- Color Chrome Effect Strong. It works by finding gradation inside colours that are already saturated rather than by raising saturation, so it has nothing to act on across the sweep and its entire effect lands on the specimen. A polished mineral, a beetle's shell or a glazed ceramic gains depth while the ground is untouched.
- Color Chrome FX Blue Off. A blue globe, a blue box or a blue book should read as its own blue. FX Blue deepens blues toward navy, which is drama bought at the cost of identification.
- Exposure +1. A reflective meter reads a mostly white frame as too bright and pulls it toward grey, which turns the sweep dirty and collapses the look. Go to +1 1/3 when the object is small in a full sweep, and back to +2/3 when the object is large and dark.

Movie mode
This one ports better than most, which is worth saying because the usual answer in this folder is that it does not. Movie mode drops Grain, Color Chrome Effect and Clarity, and two of those three are already at their neutral value here. Only Color Chrome Effect Strong is genuinely lost, so a moving version keeps Pro Neg. Std, the white balance, the tone curve, Color +2 and Sharpness +2, and gives up some depth in the saturated specimen. For a locked-off turntable or a slow push on an object, that is a small price. Validation tier: Creative design, field-test pending. Grounded in Fujifilm's published design statements for Pro Neg. Std and for each base rejected above, in this bank's Dynamic Range & Tone Curve, the contrast controls tone-curve table, in the Color, Color Chrome Effect & FX Blue, the saturation/richness controls colour control notes, and in a three-estimator measurement of the entry's own photographic corpus with the composited images excluded.
No frames have been shot with it.
Test priority: in order
- A mid-tone object on a white sweep, metered at +1. The whole recipe in one frame. Is the sweep bright and clean with gradation still in it, or has it gone to paper at one end and grey at the other? Measure it: the target is L* 91, and a sweep at 100 has taken the object's edge with it.
- A saturated specimen, a mineral or an autumn leaf, at Color +2. The colour test. Does the object reach a chroma near 22 while the ground stays under about 6? If the ground has warmed with the object, the Color argument in this recipe is wrong and the answer is a lower Color with a warmer white balance.
- The same object photographed twice in one session, then cut out and placed side by side. The consistency test, and the one that actually matters for this aesthetic. Fixed white balance is supposed to make these match. If they do not, nothing else in the recipe is worth tuning yet.
- A dark object on the sweep. The exposure test at the hard end, where the meter is being pulled hardest. Check that the object holds detail without the sweep dropping to grey.
- A long straight edge against the sweep at 100 per cent. The Sharpness +2 check. Look for a bright line running along the object's boundary, which is the halo this recipe avoided by keeping Clarity at 0. If it is there anyway, Sharpness comes down to +1.
What would count as the recipe being wrong rather than needing a tweak: if a neutral sweep at L* 91 reads as sterile and dead next to the references even when the object colour is correct, then the cream in the corpus is doing more work than the measurement credits, and it is lighting rather than paper. In that case the white balance becomes a real warm offset in the manner of Reading Room, and this recipe's central claim about a neutral ground falls with it.
Pro tip: Meter up, hard. The single most common way to miss this look is to trust the camera on a white sweep. A reflective meter is built to make the average of the frame middle grey, and when the frame is three-quarters white sweep that instruction is actively wrong. Start at +1, and check the histogram against L* 91 rather than against the blinkies.
Pro tip: Fixed white balance is doing structural work here. Most recipes in this bank use Auto and lose little. This one is shot in sets that get cut out and placed together on a page, and Auto will make a different decision for a red object than for a green one. The X-T5 stores a WB Shift per preset, so park this in a custom slot and leave it.
Pro tip: Color +2 on a portrait base is deliberate. Pro Neg. Std is restrained by design and the specimens in this aesthetic are not. The reason this is safe is that saturation scaling has nothing to grip on a neutral ground, so the object gains and the sweep does not. It is the same reason this recipe would not survive being moved onto a warm background.
Pro tip: Clarity 0 is the setting to leave alone. Austurbane runs +2 on a superficially similar tabletop, and copying that across is the trap. That subject is texture with no long edges. This one is a silhouette against a bright field, which is exactly where local contrast fringes. A halo on a picture meant to be cut out is a defect, not a style.
Pro tip: Most of this aesthetic is illustration. The channel is dominated by cutaway diagrams, painted covers and natural-history plates, and no camera setting reaches any of it. What a recipe can do is the object photography that gets composited alongside them. Shoot the specimen, then let the page do the rest.

Part 0: what the source says
CARI's entry for Utopian Scholastic, named by Karl Kraft and Michael Huldt, alternate name Encartacore, period of relevance late 1980s to late 1990s. Foundational research is still listed as pending, so the entry is one reading rather than a settled account.

Two things in that table shaped the recipe more than the rest.
The first is the stated cause. CARI grounds this aesthetic in desktop publishing and stock libraries rather than in a photographic movement, which means the photograph was always a component rather than a finished work. It was made to be cut out, placed and captioned. That is an unusual brief and it settles several settings on its own.
The second is the link to Frasurbane. This bank built Reading Room from that entry two days earlier, so the pair can be compared directly rather than by assertion. They turn out to be opposites in the measurement, which Part 3 covers.
Part 1: the corpus, and how much of it a camera can reach
CARI links an Are.na channel holding 61 blocks, 58 of them images, every one titled and nearly all dated. The titles run from 1988 to 2001 and cluster hard on CD-ROM edutainment, reference publishing and museum retail: Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia, Microsoft Bookshelf, Microsoft Home Musical Instruments, DK Eyewitness on VHS and in print, Myst, Apple At Ease, Adobe PageMaker, the American Museum of Natural History, the Insects and Spiders postage stamps.
The single largest cluster is one the derivation queue's summary did not mention at all: fourteen blocks of The Nature Company catalogues, products, packaging and posters, from 1989 to 1992. Natural-history retail, which is to say specimens and instruments photographed on pale ground for a mail-order page. That cluster is most of the photographic evidence in the channel.
Now the part that bounds this recipe. Most of this aesthetic is not photography. Cutaway diagrams, painted covers, Victorian-style natural-history illustration, typographic posters and early CGI account for more of the channel than photographs do. A JPEG recipe reaches none of it.

Saying so plainly matters more here than in most entries in this folder, because the temptation is to read the aesthetic's overall look off illustrations and then write camera settings that chase it. The recipe addresses the object photography and says so.
The images were fetched into a scratch workspace for analysis and were not downloaded into the reference set, are not reproduced here, and are not in this collection. CARI's notice is that its collection is a source of inspiration and analysis rather than free assets, and this bank is built to be sold, which makes that binding.
Part 2: the measurement, and the artefact that nearly spoiled it
The still-life cluster was converted to CIELAB. The question was what the ground actually is, because everything else in the recipe follows from it: a neutral ground and a cream ground want different bases, different white balance and different Color.
A first pass put the ground at a* +0.45 and b* +2.31, near enough to neutral to call it neutral, with a sign test of only 15 of 23 images positive on b*.
That answer was wrong, and the reason is worth recording. Nine of the twenty-three blocks returned a ground of exactly a* +0.01 and b* −0.01. A value that clean is not a measurement of anything: those images had been composited onto pure white by the original designer, so the pixels being measured were the number 255 rather than a photographed surface. Given that this aesthetic is defined by desktop publishing and cut-out collage, a large population of synthetic white grounds is exactly what should have been expected, and it was not.
Excluding pixels at or above 250 in all three channels, and dropping the nine images that are more than 15 per cent synthetic white, gives a different and much more consistent result.

This bank's Measuring film curves from datasheets, method, calibration, and its limits curve-measurement discipline asks that a finding survive a change of estimator rather than a change of window. Three estimators, one of them a statistic and one of them using an absolute band rather than the image's own distribution, all land between b* +4.3 and +5.0 with a* under +1, and the sign test is unanimous under every one.
The ground is cream, faintly, and carries no red at all. Yellow without red, at about a fifth of the strength of Reading Room's highlights.

Global chroma of 9.2 against a midtone chroma of 22.0 is the numeric form of the whole look: a frame that is mostly empty, holding an object that is not.
The limit this measurement cannot pass
These are scans of printed catalogues. Uncoated and matte paper stocks are themselves cream, so a ground at b* +5 can be warm light or it can be the paper it was printed on, and nothing in the pixels separates them.
There is one piece of weak evidence for the paper reading. If the light were warm, the object shadows would be warm too, and they are not: the still-life shadows measure a* +5.60 with b* +1.17, which is red-leaning and yellow-free, the opposite axis from the ground. A single warm light source does not usually produce a yellow ground over red shadows.
The recipe therefore treats the cream as probably paper and spends exactly one notch of white-balance shift on it, with an explicit instruction to set it to zero if the field disagrees. A look that had earned a real warm cast would have got the offset treatment that Reading Room got, and this one has not.
Part 3: the pair with Frasurbane, measured rather than asserted
CARI calls this aesthetic the kids' version of Frasurbane. Because Reading Room was built from that entry with the same instrument two days earlier, the claim can be checked instead of repeated.

They share a shadow signature, red with almost no yellow, and they diverge completely at the bright end. Frasurbane's highlights are three times as yellow and sit lower. Utopian Scholastic's ground is brighter, cleaner and nearly neutral. Frasurbane fills the frame with warm material at chroma 18.9. This one empties the frame to 9.2 and puts all the colour in one object.
The family resemblance CARI describes is real and it lives in the shadows and the subject matter. The lighting is a different discipline entirely: one is a room with its practicals left uncorrected, the other is a sweep with the light controlled to within an inch.
Part 4: the base
Fujifilm's published description of Pro Neg. Std is "optimized for use in situations with good lighting and moderate contrast, such as studio photography", with the note that parameters apply straightforwardly, which is why this bank's Dynamic Range & Tone Curve, the contrast controls tone-curve table calls it the predictable base and the best place to prototype.
Three requirements come out of Part 2 and this base meets all three natively.
- Neutral rendering, because the ground measures a* +0.63 and the aesthetic's stated purpose is quick comprehension. A base with per-hue opinions would tint the sweep and move the specimen away from itself.
- A bright end at L* 91 that stops short of clipping, which moderate contrast delivers and a hard highlight end does not.
- Predictability, which matters unusually much for output that gets cut out and set beside other cut-outs.
The close call, which is the other Pro Neg
Fujifilm's rule, recorded in this bank as a lighting decision rather than a taste one, is that Pro Neg. Hi exists to create "shadows even in flat light". A specimen setup is evenly lit, so the rule appears to point at Hi.
It does not, and the distinction is between light that is even and light that is flat. Flat light is light that has failed to model the subject, and Pro Neg. Hi rescues it. The light in this corpus has not failed. It has been built to be even on purpose, with soft small drop shadows that are visible in the Nature Company product shots and are part of the look. Asking the camera to add contrast would deepen those shadows and darken the object's shaded side, which works directly against identification.
The measurement supports the reading. The clean product shots have a black point near L* 15.8 against a ground at 91, which is a wide range. This light is not short of contrast and does not need any manufactured.

This is the second home for Pro Neg. Std that the derivation queue predicted, after North Light, and the queue's base recommendation survived measurement. That is worth recording precisely because the previous entry's did not: the method is to test the hypothesis, not to assume it fails.
Part 5: the two settings that carry the look
Color +2 on a restrained base
Midtone chroma measures 22.0 while the frame measures 9.2. Pro Neg. Std is a portrait simulation with deliberately restrained saturation, so at Color 0 the specimen lands short.
The reason a positive Color is safe here is mechanical. Color scales saturation, and a neutral has none to scale. The ground sits at a chroma of roughly 5, so it barely moves, while an object at 22 gains real colour. The control separates ground from subject without being asked to.
This is a property of the subject rather than of the recipe, and it does not travel. On a warm ground the same setting would deepen the background along with the object, which is one reason Austurbane holds Color at 0 over its warm-neutral whitespace.
Clarity 0, against the obvious precedent
Austurbane runs Clarity +2 on what looks like the same subject, a staged object on a pale surface, and the reasoning there was explicit: a tabletop of granite and linen is dense small-scale texture with no long hard edges, which is the case where a local-contrast operator flatters rather than fringes.
This subject inverts that. An object on a bright sweep is a long hard silhouette against a large flat field, which is the textbook condition for local-contrast haloing. On a photograph whose purpose is to be cut out and placed, a bright line along the object's boundary is a defect in the deliverable rather than a matter of taste.
The side effect is that this becomes one of the few looks in this folder that survives HEIF intact, since Clarity is the setting HEIF silently drops.
Part 6: where it sits in the bank
Second Pro Neg. Std original after North Light, and the two use the base for opposite reasons: North Light for its honesty about a room the photographer does not control, this one for its predictability in a studio the photographer controls completely.
Second Grain Off original after Austurbane, for the same three reasons in both cases: no film ancestor in the aesthetic, large flat pale areas where grain reads as blotch, and a subject that is a contemporary commercial deliverable rather than a photographic one.
It pairs with Austurbane as the two staged-object recipes, and the pairing is instructive because they disagree on three settings for reasons that all trace back to one difference. Austurbane's light is hard and throws a graphic shadow. This light is even and throws a soft one. From that follows Clarity +2 against 0, Classic Chrome against Pro Neg. Std, and Color 0 against +2.

Part 7: honest limits
- No frames have been shot with it.
- Most of the aesthetic is illustration and no camera setting reaches it. This recipe addresses the object photography only, which is roughly 23 of 58 blocks.
- The cream ground cannot be separated from cream paper by this measurement. The recipe spends one notch on it and says what to do if the field disagrees.
- Nine of twenty-three still-life blocks are composited onto synthetic white and are excluded from every number. The remaining sample is fourteen images, which is small.
- A reference tells you what a look is and never whether a recipe reproduces it. Part 2 characterises the corpus and says nothing about whether these settings hit it.

Which cameras this fits
Built and measured on the X-T5. The X100VI, X-H2 and X-T50 carry the same 40.2 MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, so this is not adapted for them. It is the same recipe. On an X-Trans IV body it needs one documented change.
