Part 0: the gap this closes, which is the largest one in the bank

Eleven black-and-white recipes here, and every one emulates a stock: Tri-X 400, Acros 100, HP5 Plus, Pan F Plus 50, Delta 100, 400 and 3200, FP4 Plus 125, XP2 Super 400, Ortho Plus 80, SFX 200.

They answer one question well. What does this film do.

None of them answers the other one. What does this photograph look like. Every colour look in the creative folder is a designed rendering rather than a stock, and monochrome had no equivalent at all, which meant the bank could tell you how to be faithful in black and white and could not tell you how to have a point of view in it.

Part 1: the source

Figures at a swimming hole, shot into the light through trees. What the frame holds:

The last two rows are the design problem. A low-contrast black-and-white frame whose mid-tones stop separating is not atmospheric, it is mud, and mud is one setting away in every direction.

Part 2: Acros, and why the softer base was the wrong instinct

A milky, veiled, low-contrast frame sounds like a job for Monochrome. Fujifilm states that Monochrome shares Provia's tonality design, which this bank has recorded as making it softer overall than Classic Chrome and, by extension, a gentler starting point than Acros.

That reasoning optimises for the wrong property. The requirement is not softness, which the tone curve can supply in unlimited quantity. The requirement is softness that still separates, and separation has to come from the base because the curve is about to be opened at both ends.

Fujifilm's published engineering account of Acros gives three properties, and all three are load-bearing:

The third row is the one that would be impossible to reach any other way. Plain Monochrome carries grain evenly, which would put texture into the milky highlight that has to stay smooth. Acros distributes it the way silver halide does, so Grain … is safe here in a way it would not be on a flatter base.

The filter

Acros takes no filter, or Yellow, Red or Green. This bank already holds Acros Red High Contrast and T-Max 100 on Monochrome with Green.

Green is the choice, for two reasons that both come from the reference. A green filter lightens foliage, and the frame is dense summer trees that must not close down to black. It also renders skin naturally, and there are figures in front of those trees.

Yellow is the conventional landscape filter and would start darkening the leaves. Red would produce a dramatic, high-contrast, near-infrared reading of the same scene, which is a different photograph and is already covered.

Part 3: both ends at −2, which only one base survives

Highlight … with Shadow … is the bank's documented faded curve stated at its maximum, and on most simulations it produces exactly the mud described in Part 1.

It works here because of where Acros spends its contrast. The compression is in the mid-tones, so removing the extremes leaves the middle intact: wet skin still separates from dry skin, water from leaf, leaf from bark. On a base whose contrast is distributed evenly, opening both ends would take the separation with it.

That is the sequence worth remembering: the base decision made the curve decision possible, rather than the other way round. Choosing Monochrome for softness and then discovering the frame had gone flat would have looked like a curve problem and been a base problem.

… does two jobs here rather than the usual one. It carries a backlit range that is about as wide as photography gets, and because Fujifilm's dynamic-range modes underexpose and then lift everything below the highlights, it also opens the low end in the direction this look already wants. Its ISO 500 floor is wanted rather than tolerated, for the reason in Part 4.

Clarity … is the closest thing the camera has to veiling flare. Flare is a loss of local contrast spread across the whole frame, which is a fair description of what negative Clarity does, and this is the strongest case for it anywhere in this bank. Sharpness … follows: shooting into the light through haze does not produce crisp edges, and a sharpened veil reads as a processing mistake rather than as a condition of the air.

Part 4: a deliberate departure from this bank's Acros rule

The standing note here, derived from Fujifilm's own account, is that Acros highlight grain stays fine no matter what, so a bright high-key frame always reads cleaner than a moody one at the same ISO, and grain-forward looks should therefore expose down rather than raise ISO.

This recipe exposes up, at +2/3 to +1, and the conflict should be visible rather than buried.

The reason is that the two goals have different priorities here. The milky highlight is the defining feature of the look and there is no way to reach it by underexposing: it requires putting the top end high and then softening it with Highlight …. So the grain has to come from somewhere else, and it comes from Grain … plus a ISO floor at 500 rather than from a dark frame.

The bank's rule is not wrong. It is a rule about how to get grain cheaply on this base, and this recipe declines the cheap route because it costs the thing the look is for. Practically it means the frames look overexposed on the back of the camera, which is worth knowing before deciding the recipe is broken.

Part 5: where it sits in the bank

The variants are the clearest expression of the difference. A stock emulation has one correct print tone because the emulsion had one. This has a warm version and a cool version and both are right, because a print tone is a decision a printer makes rather than a property of the film.

Part 6: honest limits

  • No frames. Creative-design tier and nothing more.
  • One image, one series. The same thinness as Dark Ground, without a four-century tradition standing behind it. This is a contemporary photographer's rendering, read from a single published frame at feed resolution.
  • The veil is weather, not settings. Backlight through humid summer air produces real flare, and Clarity … approximates a loss of local contrast without reproducing how flare actually behaves: it does not bloom around a light source, it does not vary with lens coating, and it does not change across the frame. In clean air this recipe delivers a soft low-contrast black and white and not this photograph.
  • No measurement underneath the tonality claims. Acros's mid-tone compression and shadow softness are Fujifilm's descriptions rather than numbers. No characteristic curve exists for a simulation, so the Measuring film curves from datasheets — method, calibration, and its limits curve work that grounds the stock recipes does not reach here.
  • The green filter is inferred from one frame. The bright foliage reading is consistent with a green filter and also consistent with the scene simply being backlit. If test frames show the leaves going too bright and chalky, plain Acros is the fallback and the reasoning in Part 2 does not change.
  • Exposing up on Acros is a departure from a rule this bank published, and it is stated in three places for that reason. If frames come back merely bright rather than luminous, the compensation is the first thing to question.
  • No video version. Movie mode drops Grain and Clarity, which is most of the rendering.

Which cameras this fits

Built and measured on the X-T5. The X100VI, X-H2 and X-T50 carry the same 40.2 MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, so this is not adapted for them — it is the same recipe. On an X-Trans IV body it needs one documented change.
