Mumbai (General) is a Fujifilm film simulation recipe for X-Trans V cameras. Every setting is published below in full, then how it was derived and why each control sits where it does.

The recipe

An original place-look for Mumbai's warm, dry-season, everyday character: the chaotic, textured, sun-drenched street. Earthy rust/brick/terracotta tones, deep dry-season blue skies, and vivid colour-pop accents (tarps, signage, saris, taxis), with warm skin and a hint of golden haze. This is the warm/bright counterpart to the cool, wet Mumbai Monsoon. Rationale in the notes.

Why these values (short)

  • Classic Negative: punchy, characterful, warm-capable, filmic. Makes earthy tones rich and colour accents pop while keeping a nostalgic street feel.
  • Daylight +3R/−2B: warm golden lean for the Indian sun/haze, while the blue sky stays blue.
  • DR400 + Highlight −1.5 + Shadow +1: tames Mumbai's harsh-sun contrast and holds the city's ever-present sea-haze glow (milky dusk horizons), while opening deep alley shadows. (Highlight refined −1 → −1.5 after the 11-image soul study, see the notes.)
  • Color +3, CCE Strong, CCFXB Weak: vivid saturated colour (accents pop, rust/terracotta rich) with a deep dry-season blue sky.
  • Grain Strong/Small, Sharpness +1, Clarity +1: the gritty, high-texture street. Clarity +1 is a deliberate deviation from the 0 default, the textured chaos genuinely benefits from a little mid-tone grit (drop to 0 for a cleaner look).

Tuning

  • Golden hour / haze: WB +4R/−3B, Shadow 0: warmer, glowier.
  • Cleaner / less gritty: Clarity 0, Grain Weak, Small.
  • Punchier midday: DR 200, Color +4.
  • For wet/overcast monsoon, switch to Mumbai Monsoon.

Pro tip: What Color Chrome Effect actually does (2026-07-20, official). CCE is modelled on Fortia, Fujifilm's ultra-saturated reversal film, and its mechanism is gradation detection, not saturation: "by analysing the light and information received on the sensor surface, one can detect slight gradation… to create tonality while maintaining high contrast." So CCE Strong doesn't make this recipe more colourful. It stops already-saturated areas from flattening into solid patches. Practical consequence: it does most of its work on rich subjects (wood, brass, terracotta, deep foliage, saturated fabric, warm skin) and almost nothing on a grey overcast frame, so on flat, muted days you lose little by leaving it off if you want the speed.

ISO 500 is the sweet spot, not a compromise (measured 2026-07-27). DR400 pins the ISO floor at 500, and that is exactly where the X-T5's conversion-gain step sits, so it is the cleanest ISO in that region, not a tax you pay for using DR400. ISO 640 is the expensive next click: roughly 0.35 EV of dynamic range for one third-stop, against about 0.02 EV for the step from 400 to 500. In good light, hold ISO at 500 and control exposure with aperture and shutter. Measured from published read-noise and PDR data, see Dynamic Range & Tone Curve, the contrast controls.

Movie mode

Movie-mode version of the stills recipe. Movie mode drops Grain, Color Chrome Effect, Color Chrome FX Blue, and Clarity (see Video / Movie Mode, settings, differences, and photo→video translation video-mode-settings). Target: standard film-simulation recording.

  • Clarity +1 (the grit) and Grain are unavailable in video → add grain in post. A mist filter is not wanted here (this look is crisp/gritty, not hazy-soft).
  • The warm/bright colour and blue sky carry through via WB + Classic Negative + Color +4.

The soul, distilled

Across every image, Bombay is warmth wrapped in haze, with colour that refuses to be dulled:

  • Golden-ochre warmth is the base note: colonial basalt, rust, terracotta, sodium light, brass. The city is warm in every light, day and night.
  • The sea is always in the air: haze softens highlights, dissolves distance, and turns dusk milky-gold. Contrast lives up close. The horizon melts.
  • Colour accents are the heartbeat: kaali-peeli yellow, blue tarps (in nearly every frame), marigold, saffron, rani pink, laundry mosaics. Saturated life on an earthy stage.
  • Blue is real but gentle: deep only on clear days, usually paled by haze. Never Velvia-deep.
  • Texture everywhere: rust, peeling paint, corrugated tin, wet stone, crowds. Grit is not noise. It's the subject.

Original design, 11 real images across 7 condition types (top tier for a place-look. No film datasheet applies). Refined once from the evidence (Highlight −1 → −1.5).

Which cameras this fits

Built and measured on the X-T5. The X100VI, X-H2 and X-T50 carry the same 40.2 MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, so this is not adapted for them. It is the same recipe.
