Mumbai Monsoon is a Fujifilm film simulation recipe for X-Trans V cameras. Every setting is published below in full, then how it was derived and why each control sits where it does.

The recipe

An original recipe designed for Mumbai monsoon conditions: flat overcast light, wet reflective streets, rain haze, rain-deepened greens, and bright colour accents (umbrellas, black-&-yellow taxis, signage) against a grey backdrop, often in low light. It's a cinematic cool-shadow / warm-accent grade that adds depth to flat light while keeping the moody, wet atmosphere. Rationale in the notes.

Why these values (short version)

  • Classic Negative: its hard tonality injects contrast/depth into flat overcast light, and its cool teal-leaning shadows suit wet streets and rain.
  • DR400 + Highlight −2: grey monsoon skies clip easily. This protects them with a soft roll-off, and lifts shadow detail in dark scenes.
  • Shadow +1: moody, slightly deepened blacks without crushing rain/wet-street detail.
  • 6500K, +2R/−2B: neutralises the blue-grey overcast and adds a touch of warmth to skin and colour accents, giving the cinematic teal-shadow / warm-highlight split against Classic Neg's cool shadows.
  • Color +1, CCE Strong, CCFXB Weak: keeps colour restrained/moody overall but lets accents pop, deepens blues/teals of wet surfaces and rain.
  • Grain Strong/Large, Sharpness −1, Clarity 0: atmospheric, humid, filmic texture from grain + soft edges (Clarity kept at 0 per the quality standard. Add a physical mist filter for more haze rather than negative Clarity).
  • ISO up to 12800: monsoon days are dark. The raised ceiling handles low light (grain masks the noise).

Tuning for the day

  • Heavy rain / very moody: Shadow +2, Color 0: deeper, greyer, more melancholic.
  • Colour-pop street (taxis, umbrellas): Color +2, Clarity 0: livelier accents.
  • Blue-hour / night rain with neon: drop to 5500K and let the practicals glow. Consider the CineStill 800T recipe instead for full neon-night work.

ISO 500 is the sweet spot, not a compromise (measured 2026-07-27). DR400 pins the ISO floor at 500, and that is exactly where the X-T5's conversion-gain step sits, so it is the cleanest ISO in that region, not a tax you pay for using DR400. ISO 640 is the expensive next click: roughly 0.35 EV of dynamic range for one third-stop, against about 0.02 EV for the step from 400 to 500. In good light, hold ISO at 500 and control exposure with aperture and shutter. Measured from published read-noise and PDR data, see Dynamic Range & Tone Curve, the contrast controls.

Movie mode

Movie-mode version of the stills recipe. Movie mode drops Grain, Color Chrome Effect, Color Chrome FX Blue, and Clarity (see Video / Movie Mode, settings, differences, and photo→video translation video-mode-settings), so the teal/warm colour split is preserved through WB + Classic Negative, and the lost richness is partly compensated. Target: standard film-simulation recording (baked-in), not F-Log/HLG.

What was dropped and how it's handled

  • Color Chrome FX Blue (Weak): unavailable → the cool teal depth in wet surfaces is slightly reduced. Color +2 and the WB base recover most of it. For more teal, nudge WB to 6300K.
  • Color Chrome Effect (Strong): unavailable → Color +2 restores accent richness.
  • Clarity (−1): unavailable → keep Sharpness −1. A physical mist/diffusion filter adds the humid atmosphere convincingly on video.
  • Grain (Strong/Large): unavailable → add grain in post for the filmic monsoon texture.

Notes

  • Handheld in low light: rely on IBIS and keep shutter at ~1/50 (25/30p) or ~1/100 (50/60p). Let Auto-ISO climb.
  • For rain-at-night with neon practicals, switch to the CineStill 800T approach.

The problem this grade solves

Mumbai's monsoon presents a specific and difficult set of conditions, and the grade is engineered against each one:

The look in one line

A cinematic, moody, cool-shadowed monsoon grade. Teal-leaning wet shadows and protected grey highlights, with just enough warmth and saturation to keep skin and colour accents alive.

Why Classic Negative (not Eterna or Classic Chrome)

  • Eterna is the obvious "cinematic" pick, but it is low contrast. Layering it on already-flat overcast light compounds the flatness into mush. (See the alternative below if you want maximum softness.)
  • Classic Chrome is muted and calm but lacks the teal-shadow character that reads as "rain".
  • Classic Negative is the sweet spot: its hard tonality actively fights the flat light, and its cool, hue-separated shadows are exactly the wet-street/rain palette we want. It also holds colour accents well.

The teal-and-warm cinematic split

The signature of this grade is a subtle teal shadow / warm mid split, the classic cinematic monsoon look:

  • Cool side: Classic Neg's native teal-leaning shadows, reinforced by Color Chrome FX Blue (Weak) deepening blues/teals in wet surfaces, rain, and the grey sky.
  • Warm side: the +2 Red WB shift keeps skin, headlights, shop windows, and taxis warm. The two pull against each other for depth and mood without heavy editing.

Contrast logic

  • Highlights −2 + DR400: grey skies are the enemy. They blow out and look like white voids. This softens and holds them.
  • Shadows +1: rebuilds the contrast the flat light removed, adding weight and mood, but only +1, because monsoon scenes are already dim and +3 would crush the wet-street detail that makes these frames work. (Push to +2 for heavier weather.)

Exposure approach

Overcast fools the meter (bright grey sky → the camera underexposes your subject). But for a moody result you don't want to over-brighten either. Meter for the subject and lean slightly under (−1/3) for atmosphere. Go to +1/3 when you need faces/detail clean. Judge per scene. This is a mood grade, not a documentation grade.

Alternative: "Monsoon Cinema" (softer/moodier)

For a dreamier, more filmic take, swap the base to Eterna, keep DR400 / Highlight −2, set Shadow +2, Color +2 (Eterna is desaturated so it needs the bump), Clarity −2, WB 6300K +1R/−2B. Flatter and softer. Better for slow, atmospheric rain footage/stills. Worse for snappy street.

Which cameras this fits

Built and measured on the X-T5. The X100VI, X-H2 and X-T50 carry the same 40.2 MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, so this is not adapted for them. It is the same recipe.
