Fujicolor Pro 400H
Fujicolor Pro 400H is a Fujifilm film simulation recipe for X-Trans V cameras. Every setting is published below in full, then how it was derived and why each control sits where it does.

Research-backed original, derived from the Fujifilm Pro 400H datasheet (archived) and a Analog vs. Digital: Pro 400H Film Stock vs. Pro Neg Hi Simulation dedicated video comparison of real Pro 400H scans vs the PRO Neg. Hi simulation. Reproduces the discontinued (2021/2022) wedding-photographer favourite: extraordinarily fine grain, cool-to-neutral skin, controlled shadow saturation with a distinctive cyan-green cast, and one of the longest highlight shoulders of any colour negative. Why these values (short)
- PRO Neg. Hi base: the closest built-in match to Pro 400H's reduced-contrast, neutral-to-cool skin register (confirmed against real Pro 400H scans in the linked comparison).
- Grain Weak/Small: datasheet: diffuse RMS granularity 4, the finest grain of any film in this bank (finer even than Ektar or Acros).
- WB Daylight −1R/+2B: the comparison found Pro Neg. Hi reads slightly warmer/more neutral than the real film's blue-green shadow cast. This shift pulls it cooler to compensate.
- CCFXB Weak (not Off). Adds back the cyan-green depth in shadows/greens that the base simulation lacks natively. This is the single biggest correction identified by the video comparison.
- DR400 + Highlight −2: models "one of the longest shoulder curves in professional colour negative film". Highlights hold detail far beyond typical negative stocks.
- Shadow −1: natural lift. Pro 400H never crushes blacks.
- Color 0, CCE Off: datasheet: "appropriately controlled color saturation in the shadows" for a three-dimensional feel, not a saturated film.
- Sharpness −1: softer acuity than digital, per the comparison.
- Clarity 0: per quality standard. Nothing calls for grit.
Handling
- Best for portraits, weddings, overcast/mixed light: this was the wedding-industry standard for a reason: forgiving, cool-neutral, flattering without being punchy.
- Wide real-world latitude (often rated 200-320 by film shooters for smoother gradation). Slight overexposure is safe.
Validation tier: Datasheet-validated (RMS 4, controlled shadow saturation, wide latitude, archived PDF) + characteristic-validated against an existing side-by-side video analysis of real film vs the Fuji simulation (see Analog vs. Digital: Pro 400H Film Stock vs. Pro Neg Hi Simulation), the strongest non-scan evidence base in the bank, since it's a direct film-vs-simulation study rather than film alone. Scan-validation (additional independent scans) still pending.
Pro tip: Why Pro Neg Hi is the right base (2026-07-20, official). Fujifilm's spec for PRO Neg. Hi is that it "boosts contrast, creating shadows even in flat light, making it easier for creating outdoor portraits." That resolves the apparent contradiction in this recipe. Pro 400H is a famously flat, pastel, overcast-and-open-shade film, yet its real scans still show tonal structure. The base manufactures the structure the light doesn't provide. Corollary: the Hi/Std choice is a lighting decision, not a taste one, in controlled studio light, PRO Neg. Std (officially "optimized for good lighting and moderate contrast") is the more faithful base for this stock.
First pixel evidence (2026-07-20): until now this recipe had no real scan at all (datasheet + a video comparison only). One confirmed Pro 400H frame analysed (Wikimedia Commons, analysis-only. Described as Rolleiflex SLX · FujiColor Pro 400H): a fallen maple leaf on a metal handrail, soft overcast light, out-of-focus autumn foliage behind. Everything the recipe claims, confirmed:
- The handrail is an ideal neutral reference and reads neutral-to-slightly-cool, no warm cast anywhere. This is the single clearest confirmation of Pro 400H's famously cool-neutral rendering, and it validates the recipe's cool WB direction.
- Greens are muted and desaturated toward sage/olive, never vivid, exactly the pastel foliage the recipe targets.
- Genuinely low contrast: open shadows in the dark foliage, gentle unclipped highlights on the bright rail. This validates Highlight −2 / Shadow −1, the recipe is deliberately damping Pro Neg. Hi's contrast boost, and the real film is this soft.
- Saturation stays restrained even on the subject, the one warm accent (the leaf) is pale butter-yellow with brown mottling, not a saturated orange.
- Grain essentially invisible in smooth areas at full width, consistent with the datasheet's RMS 4, the finest in the bank. Limits: 1 frame, one photographer, soft overcast only. No skin-tone evidence, which matters, because this is primarily a portrait/wedding stock.
ISO 500 is the sweet spot, not a compromise (measured 2026-07-27). DR400 pins the ISO floor at 500, and that is exactly where the X-T5's conversion-gain step sits, so it is the cleanest ISO in that region, not a tax you pay for using DR400. ISO 640 is the expensive next click: roughly 0.35 EV of dynamic range for one third-stop, against about 0.02 EV for the step from 400 to 500. In good light, hold ISO at 500 and control exposure with aperture and shutter. Measured from published read-noise and PDR data, see Dynamic Range & Tone Curve, the contrast controls.

The film
Fujifilm's flagship professional colour negative (discontinued 2021 in 35mm, 2022 in 120), for over a decade the default choice for wedding and portrait photographers wanting a cool, soft, "airy" look. The datasheet (archived) specifies:
- Diffuse RMS granularity value: 4: the finest grain of any film in this bank (finer than Acros' RMS 7, finer than Portra's PGI 37, finer than Ektar's PGI <25).
- "Superb skin tones with smoothly continuous gradation from highlights to shadows."
- "Excellent three-dimensional appearance": clearer highlight colours, "appropriately controlled color saturation in the shadows", i.e. Shadows are deliberately less saturated than highlights, which is what reads as the film's signature cool/blue-green shadow cast.
- Faithful reproduction of neutral grays with sharply improved fidelity across a wide exposure range, under to over.
Corroborating evidence: a direct film-vs-simulation study
Unlike most recipes in this bank, Pro 400H has an existing Analog vs. Digital: Pro 400H Film Stock vs. Pro Neg Hi Simulation side-by-side video comparison of real Pro 400H scans against the PRO Neg. Hi in-camera simulation on a X-Pro3. Its findings, used directly in this derivation:
- PRO Neg. Hi is the closest built-in match (contrast level, cool-neutral skin direction, highlight rolloff shape) but runs warmer and more saturated in greens/shadows than the real film.
- The real film's cyan-green shadow cast comes from its emulsion layer balance. Something the simulation's LUT doesn't reproduce on its own, so it has to be added back via Color Chrome FX Blue and a cool WB shift.
- Pro Neg. Hi was modelled on Fuji's NPS/NS 160 studio portrait film, not on Pro 400H directly. Explaining the gap.
The grade in one line
Cool, soft, extraordinarily fine-grained pro-portrait negative. Clean highlights, gently blue-green shadows, never punchy, "airy" wedding-photography colour.
How the settings embody it
PRO Neg. Hi supplies the reduced-contrast, cool-neutral skin foundation. CCFXB Weak (rather than Off) is the key correction the video comparison identified. It restores the shadow cyan-green depth the base sim lacks. The cool WB shift (−1R/+2B) pushes the whole image toward the real film's blue-green lean. DR400 + Highlight −2 model the exceptionally long highlight shoulder. Shadow −1 keeps blacks lifted and soft. Color 0 + CCE Off keep saturation "appropriately controlled," never vivid. RMS-4 grain means Weak/Small, the finest grain setting used anywhere in this bank.
vs the rest of the bank
- Kodak Portra 400: both are "invisible grain, wide latitude, skin-first" pro negatives, but Portra 400 is warm (Classic Chrome, +2R/−4B) where Pro 400H is cool (PRO Neg. Hi, −1R/+2B), an useful warm/cool pairing for portrait work, the same relationship as Gold↔Superia for consumer negatives.
- Ektar 100: Ektar is vivid/punchy/landscape-first. Pro 400H is muted/soft/portrait-first. Opposite poles of Kodak-vs-Fuji pro colour negative philosophy (though Pro 400H is a Fuji stock, its market position mirrors Kodak's Portra rather than Ektar).
Validation status
Datasheet-validated (RMS 4, shadow-saturation control, wide latitude, archived PDF) + validated against a direct film-vs-simulation video study (stronger evidence than characteristic-only reviews, since it isolates exactly where the base sim needs correcting). Scan-validation (independent real scans beyond the video) pending.

Built and measured on the X-T5. The X100VI, X-H2 and X-T50 carry the same 40.2 MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor, so this is not adapted for them. It is the same recipe.
