The recipe
The classic British reportage B&W: balanced, forgiving, with even visible grain, medium contrast, and deep-but-natural shadows that "let shadows be shadows." Smoother and more flexible than Tri-X. Validated against a real HP5 scan (see the notes).

Notes
- Grain Strong, Small: HP5's prominent but even, well-distributed grain (vs Tri-X's clumpy Large). The real scan showed clearly-visible, structured grain in smooth areas.
- Highlight 0 / Shadow +2: HP5's balanced, medium contrast with deep natural shadows that hold their darkness (it "lets shadows be shadows").
- Sharpness 0: HP5 is a touch softer/smoother than Acros or Tri-X.
- Clarity 0: HP5 is a smooth, balanced stock. Grit would be unfaithful (unlike Tri-X).
- Forgiving & pushes well: let ISO climb. HP5 tolerates it gracefully.
- Filter: plain Acros default. +Ye for a little more sky contrast.
- Video: Film Sim + DR (manual) + Tone Curve transfer. Grain is lost (add in post).
Scan validation, second frame, and the cleanest B&W evidence in the bank (2026-07-21). A frame from the 1989 Prague Velvet Revolution (Wikimedia Commons, analysis-only. Stated as HP5 / ID-11 / EI 400), three organisers around a table in available indoor light. This is unusually good evidence, for a specific reason: it is developed in ID-11, the standard solvent developer, at box speed. Per the Validation Methodology. Proof of Faithfulness B&W confounder rule, that makes it neutral evidence, unlike Rodinal or stand-developed frames which impose their own grain and tonality. Genuine reportage, conventionally processed, no styling. What it confirms:
- Skin renders beautifully, three faces, all with clear mid-grey modelling across cheeks, foreheads and eye sockets. The best skin-tone evidence obtained for any recipe in this bank. HP5's reputation for forgiving faces is visibly earned.
- Grain is fine-to-moderate and even. Noticeably smoother than the Tri-X frames, which is precisely the distinction the two recipes are built to express: HP5 balanced and even, Tri-X coarse and clumpy.
- Enormous latitude, a blown window at frame left, mid-grey knitwear, and dark bookcase recesses that still hold detail, all in one available-light exposure.
- Moderate contrast, long tonal scale. Gentle and documentary rather than punchy. The white knit sweater keeps full texture as the brightest non-window element. Status: Scan (2 frames). Confounder check passed on developer, format, lens and light.
Pro tip: HP5 is the forgiving B&W recipe, and skin is where it shows (2026-07-21). If you are choosing between the B&W originals for people, take this one. Verified above: HP5 in standard development holds facial modelling and blown-window latitude in the same frame, with even grain that never fights the face. Reach for Tri-X when you want the coarse, punchy, high-contrast reportage attitude, and this when you want the subject to carry the picture rather than the film.
Scan validation, third frame. Night street (2026-07-21). A second Prague 1989 frame from the same photographer and pipeline (HP5 / ID-11 / EI 400): a vast night crowd under streetlights, hand-held. Latitude is confirmed as this film's defining quality. In one night exposure the frame holds blooming streetlamps at the top, mid-grey crowd through the middle, and deep coat blacks that still show fabric texture: with faces retaining modelling even small in the frame and in poor light. Highlights bloom softly rather than clipping harshly. Grain is clearly visible and even, more apparent than in the indoor frame, exactly as expected at night, and still never clumpy. Status: Scan (3 frames, indoor available light, night street, plus earlier). This is now among the best-evidenced B&W recipes in the bank. Worth noting methodologically: this frame is the kind of night/available-light scene that has repeatedly proved unusable for colour stocks, because strange light sources dominate the frame. Ilford HP5 Plus 400 is the classic British medium-speed B&W, the reportage/documentary counterpart to Tri-X. It's known for strong, balanced tonality, even (traditional cubic) grain that distributes smoothly, medium contrast, and deep shadows that stay dark ("lets shadows be shadows"). Very forgiving and push-friendly. Flexible across lighting.

Analysed from Wikimedia Commons (analysis-only): a foggy skyline. Prominent, even, structured grain across the smooth grey fog. Medium contrast with buildings holding as solid dark-grey-to-black masses. Gentle highlight roll-off in the mist. Confirmed: even visible grain → Grain Strong/Small. Balanced medium contrast → DR200 + Highlight 0. Deep natural shadows → Shadow +2. (Single scan → one more pass recommended for portrait/sunlit conditions.)
vs the other B&W originals
HP5 is the middle ground:
- Grittier/heavier than Acros (which is fine/smooth), but
- Smoother and lower-contrast than Tri-X (which is clumpy-grained, high-contrast, Clarity +3). HP5 keeps Clarity 0. It's a smooth, balanced stock, not a gritty one.

- "High speed, fine grain, medium contrast": the sheet's own words → confirms Highlight 0 (medium contrast) and grain visible-but-not-clumpy.
- Push range documented to EI 3200/36 ("responds well to push-processing") → confirms the high ISO ceiling. Grain/contrast rise gracefully with EI.
- Development aims produce "negatives of average contrast suitable for printing in all enlargers" → HP5's balanced curve is by design. Our Shadow +2 carries the "lets shadows be shadows" depth without inflating overall contrast.
