The X-Trans V Problem: Why Your Old Fujifilm Recipes Look Terrible on the X-T5

If you recently upgraded from a Fujifilm X-T4 or X100V to a newer X-Trans V camera, like the X-T5, X-H2, or X100VI, you probably experienced a moment of sheer panic.

You unboxed the camera, dialed in your favorite custom film simulation recipe, stepped outside to take a test shot, and immediately noticed that something was horribly wrong. The contrast felt slightly heavy, the midtones were dense, and worst of all, the sky looked like it had been painted with aggressive, neon-blue highlighters.

You didn't do anything wrong. You didn't input the settings incorrectly. And no, your brand-new camera isn't broken.

You have simply fallen victim to the X-Trans V problem. Fujifilm film simulation recipes do not port perfectly across camera generations. The underlying processing pipeline changed, and if you want your old recipes to look right on your new sensor, you have to understand exactly what the engineers did to the blue channel.

The Secret Color Science Shift

When Fujifilm released the X-Processor 5, they made a massive, undocumented change to their color science pipeline. They didn't change every simulation, but they fundamentally altered how four of their most popular profiles render the color blue:

  • Classic Chrome
  • Classic Negative
  • Eterna
  • Eterna Bleach Bypass

On the older X-Trans IV cameras (like the X-T4 and X100V), the blue channel on these specific simulations was relatively muted. The skies in Classic Chrome had a soft, desaturated, slightly cyan tint that felt incredibly nostalgic.

On the X-Trans V cameras, Fujifilm decided that photographers wanted punchier skies. They tweaked the algorithms so that the blue channel now renders significantly deeper, darker, and more heavily saturated.

If you take a recipe built for the X-T4 and punch it straight into a X-T5, you are stacking an old color correction on top of a new, aggressive baseline. The blues rapidly over-saturate and clip, destroying the delicate vintage aesthetic the recipe author intended.

The Fix: Color Chrome FX Blue

The culprit behind this neon sky phenomenon isn't actually the base film simulation alone. It is the interaction between the new sensor baseline and the Color Chrome FX Blue (CCFXB) setting.

On older cameras, recipe creators frequently set CCFXB to "…" or "…" to inject some much-needed density back into the otherwise anemic blue channel. But if you apply CCFXB "…" on a X-T5-where the blues are already inherently dense, you push the color completely out of bounds.

Fortunately, there is a hard, objective rule for fixing this. If you are converting a X-Trans IV recipe to the X-Trans V generation, and the recipe uses one of the four profiles listed above, you must drop the CCFXB setting by exactly one notch.

The Conversion Rule

  • If the original recipe calls for CCFXB: …, you must change it to CCFXB: … on your X-T5.
  • If the original recipe calls for CCFXB: …, you must change it to CCFXB: … on your X-T5.
  • If the original recipe already called for CCFXB: …, leave it . Your blues will still be slightly deeper than they were on the older camera, but this is as close to a 1:1 match as you can get without shooting RAW.

The Auto White Balance Drift

The blue channel isn't the only thing that changed in the generational leap. The X-Trans V bodies introduced a new, highly advanced AI-driven Auto White Balance (AWB) algorithm.

In theory, this is a massive upgrade. The camera is now significantly better at identifying mixed lighting and neutralizing color casts to produce a mathematically perfect white balance.

In the context of film emulation, this is a disaster.

Film emulation relies on color casts. A roll of Kodak Gold 200 is supposed to look aggressively warm indoors. If you use a recipe built on Auto White Balance, the X-T5's new AI will actively fight the recipe, trying to neutralize the warmth that the recipe author intended to be there. This is why AWB-based recipes often look wildly inconsistent between the X100V and the X100VI.

The fix here is simple but requires a change in your shooting habits: stop using Auto White Balance for film emulations.

If you want a recipe to look identical across every Fujifilm camera generation, you must lock the white balance to a fixed Kelvin value or a daylight preset. This completely bypasses the camera's AI guesswork. The sensor simply records the light exactly as it falls, preserving the true color science of the recipe.

Trust the Math, Not the Menus

The X-T5 is objectively the most JPEG engine Fujifilm has ever created. It gives you microscopic control over the physical emulation of film dyes and silver halide clumping.

But you cannot treat it like a digital preset machine. When a recipe looks wrong on your new camera, the answer isn't to blindly twist the highlight and shadow dials until the image looks okay. The answer is to understand the physics of the sensor beneath your fingers. Fix the blue channel, lock your white balance, and your classic recipes will look better than ever.
